Tom King + Daniel Sampere will kick off ‘The Wonder War’ act 2 in September

The Matriarch’s story continues in the main ‘Wonder Woman’ title and in a 48-page special tracing the Matriarch’s path through Hell.

DC has announced that Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s “The Wonder War” arc will move into its second act in September. The battle with the Matriarch continues in Wonder Woman #37, followed later in the month by Wonder Woman Annual: Wonder War — The Matriarch #1, a 48-page special by Stephanie Williams and Leah Williams, with art by Eduardo Pansica and Belén Ortega.

Wonder Woman #37 continues the story of Steve Trevor and his daughter Trinity, who arrived in the present after a defeat at the hands of the Matriarch two decades in the future. The pair must convince Wonder Woman of the threat a seemingly innocent child will eventually pose.

The issue features a main cover by Sampere and variant covers by Mahmud Asrar, David Nakayama and Kyuyong Eom:

The Matriarch special follows the character’s journey through Hell after the events of Wonder Woman #34, as she crawls back toward the land of the living while crossing a river filled with the souls of those who died by her hand. Stephanie Williams said the special runs parallel to the main series, focusing on an internal conflict rather than the external one playing out in Wonder Woman.

“In the Matriarch Special, Leah and I are exploring a single motif: conviction versus doubt,” said Williams, the first African-American woman nominated for the Eisner’s “Best Writer” category. “The Fates take Lyssa’s Green Lantern ring and send her alone onto the Phlegethon, the River of Fire she was warned about as a girl. This leaves her isolated, compelled to confront her own fears and uncertainties. We’re intentionally paralleling the events of ‘The Wonder War Act 2’ that begins earlier in September. While Tom and Dani fight the external war in Wonder Woman #37, Eduardo, Belén, Leah and I are following Lyssa’s internal struggle after she chooses fate over freedom.”

The annual features a main cover by Sampere and variant covers by Eom, Guillem March and Leirix:

Wonder Woman #37 arrives Sept. 16, while Wonder Woman Annual: Wonder War — The Matriarch will be in stores two weeks later on Sept. 30.
