The kids aren’t all right in Roberts and Robertson’s ‘Harbinger Renegades’

I’m a big fan of Valiant’s Faith and Archer & Armstrong titles at the moment, so I’m pretty excited to see that November brings the return of Harbinger in Harbinger Renegades by A&A writer Rafer Roberts and artist Darick Robertson.

Roberts (with artist David Lafuente) has told some really fun A&A stories thus far, and now he’s teaming up with the artist of such classics as Transmetropolitan and The Boys. I’ve missed seeing his art on a regular basis, so November can’t get here soon enough. It’s part of the bigger “Future of Valiant” wave of titles, which also included last month’s launch of a Faith ongoing series, plus the upcoming Generation Zero, Britannia, Bloodshot U.S.A. and Savage.

Believe the hype: These Public Enemy figures are awesome

Based on designs by Ed Piskor, the set includes Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and Terminator X.

One of the coolest pieces of merch I saw coming out of San Diego this year (besides that Flex Mentallo towel) was this box set of Public Enemy action figures based on designs by Hip Hop Family Tree creator Ed Piskor. I was afraid they might be an SDCC exclusive, but they are available to the rest of the world as well.

Quoted: Todd Klein on Gaspar Saladino

Klein remembers his “creative inspiration as a letterer” and friend, who passed away Aug. 4.

“When I started working at DC in 1977 I was blown away seeing and working with Gaspar’s lettering in person, such as the examples above. I learned a lot from the work of other letterers, but Gaspar was the one who constantly impressed me. At that time, Gaspar would come into the DC offices once a week to turn in work and pick up new assignments. He was doing lots of cover lettering and quite a bit of story page lettering regularly, and logo designs from time to time. Gaspar was always smiling and friendly, with a hearty laugh. Traces of Brooklyn remained in his voice, and he talked and joked with everyone. He was friendly and polite, a gentleman. I got to know him, and liked the person as much as the work. When he would sit down to do corrections or last minute cover lettering in the production room, I would sneak glances to see how he was doing what he did. I never actually asked him to show me how to do anything, but I absorbed what I could from those brief looks and the work itself. Gaspar was testy at times about the fact that so many letterers tried to copy his work, but he needn’t have worried. We could never copy his innate brilliance and talent.”

Letterer Todd Klein on Gaspar Saladino, his “creative inspiration as a letterer” and friend, who passed away on Aug. 4 at the age of 88. Klein shares a thorough obituary and tribute to his friend on his site that covers a lot of comic history as well.

Baltimore Comic-Con honors 75 years of ‘Archie’

A huge list of artists contribute their renditions of Archie and Friends for this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook.

In past years the Baltimore Comic-Con has spotlighted an independent comic creation in their annual yearbook, available at the show and featuring a collection of pin-ups by other artists. Usagi Yojimbo, for instance, was featured in 2013 for the character’s 30th anniversary. This year the convention has chosen a whole line of characters to feature, as they honor Archie Comics’ 75th anniversary.

Check out Todd Klein’s process for creating a retro ‘American Gods’ cover

Klein worked with legendary paperback and movie poster artist Robert McGinnis to create a new cover for Neil Gaiman’s book, the first of many from the Gaiman library.

With the American Gods TV show getting a lot of attention right now, demand for Neil Gaiman’s original novel about old gods facing new gods has skyrocketed. Luckily, Gaiman and his publisher were already discussing a new paperback printing of the book — one featuring a cover by Robert McGinnis.

Delsante & Izaaske return to Kickstarter to give you more ‘Stray’

The duo discuss how the Kickstarter campaign is going, what to expect from the series, some news on back-ups and more.

After funding a miniseries featuring their independent superhero character in 2013, Stray co-creators Vito Delsante and Sean Izaakse returned to Kickstarter this month to raise money for an ongoing series. They reached their goal fairly quickly, which is when the real work began.

The story focuses on Rodney Weller, the former teen sidekick to the superhero known as Doberman. When his mentor is killed, Rodney returns to action after five years to solve the murder as Stray. In addition to the miniseries, Stray also appeared in Action Lab‘s Actionverse crossover series with Molly Danger and Midnight Tiger. Joining the creative team for the first arc is artist Phil Cho. As the first arc takes place in both the past and present, Cho will draw the flashback sequences while Izaakse will draw the present-day story.
