‘Street Angel’ returns at Image Comics

Brian Maruca and Jim Rugg’s seventh-grade kung fu master battles the Ninja Kid and a school dance in a new hardcover.

Brian Maruca and Jim Rugg’s much-beloved “eternal underdog” returns to the printed page in April with the Street Angel: After School Kung Fu Special hardcover from Image Comics.

The graphic novel pits the homeless, seventh-grade kung fu master against the Ninja Kid and a school dance. If you’ve never read Street Angel before, fear not — just skateboard down to your local comic shop and grab a copy of the Street Angel collection from AdHouse Books, which collects her previous miniseries (originally published by SLG). And if your skateboard is broken, you can always check out her adventures online.

Reading for Resistance is a new column highlighting comics and graphic novels that shed light on issues in the news.

On Saturday, everyone was talking about refugees. Six years ago, Sarah Glidden made a journey through parts of Turkey, Iraq, and Syria with a group of independent journalists who were focusing on refugees and their situation throughout the region; they were accompanied by a veteran of the Iraq War who was recording his own reflections. Last September, Drawn and Quarterly published Glidden’s graphic memoir of that trip, Rolling Blackouts.

Oni to publish Joey Weiser’s ‘Ghost Hog’

Here’s some very welcome publishing news: Mermin creator Joey Weiser will soon be working on his next project, Ghost Hog, which Publisher’s Weekly reveals will come out from Oni Press in 2018.

The story stars Truff, a young boar killed by a hunter, as she navigates the afterlife and tries to let go of her desire for revenge. “She’s a bit of a grump, but you would be too given the circumstances,” Weiser said on Tumblr. “Ghost Hog, naturally, is a little darker in concept than my past work, but will still have a similar tone to Mermin, The Ride Home, etc.”

Hellboy sets sail — with ghosts! — in ‘Into the Silent Sea’

Check out a preview of the original graphic novel, coming next spring from Dark Horse.

Next spring a third Hellboy original graphic novel will arrive from Mike Mignola, Gary Gianni and Dave Stewart. Titled Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, the OGN follows up on 2002’s “The Island” as we learn what happened next to our brave hero.

“The biblical Jonah was vomited up by a whale, but Hellboy might not be as lucky,” Gianni said in a press release. “A superstitious crew and a figure in black will make sure there’s no escaping the silent sea.” Taken captive by the phantom crew that plans to sell him to the circus, Hellboy is dragged along by a captain who will stop at nothing in pursuit of a powerful sea creature.

‘Dapper Men’ books land at Top Shelf

Jim McCann and Janet Lee’s whimsical tale gets a deluxe edition next summer and a sequel in 2018.

Return of the Dapper Men and its planned sequels have found a new home at Top Shelf Productions. Announced at the New York Comic-Con this past weekend, the IDW imprint will release a deluxe edition of the book next summer.

Return of the Dapper Men, by Jim McCann and Janet Lee, was originally published by Archaia in 2010, and McCann and Lee acquired the rights from them to the book in 2014. The whimsical story of a boy, a robot girl and the Dapper Man known as 41 won the Eisner Award for “Best Graphic Album: New” (tying with Daniel Clowes’ Wilson) in 2011.

Hacker fights for the future in Wren McDonald’s ‘SP4RX’

Check out a preview and the trailer for the upcoming graphic novel from Nobrow Press.

You can count on Nobrow Press to bring out a lot of interesting and cool comics and graphic novels, and their fall/winter slate, which I detailed back in June, is no exception. One of the projects that jumped out at me back back in June when I was putting that post together was SP4RX.

Wren McDonald‘s science fiction/social commentary/political thriller is about a hacker in a dystopian future who discovers a big secret about a cybernetic implants program being run by Structus Industries. McDonald’s artwork is the big draw for me here; it has a dynamic quality with huge amounts of detail packed into it, where you want to examine every panel further just to see what you missed.

Ignatz-nominee ‘A Small Revolution’ headed to print

Soaring Penguin Press has announced plans for the English-language publication of A Small Revolution by Boum. Nominated for Outstanding Online Comic in this year’s Ignatz Awards, A Small Revolution follows the young orphan named Florence who joins a revolution she’s too young to fully understand.

Drawn & Quarterly’s 2016 Free Comic Book Day offering sent Tom Gauld’s Mooncop to the top of my “most anticipated fall releases” list, and as of now we’re only a week away before it drops. With that in mind, here are a couple of items to whet the appetite. First, our old friend Graeme McMillan spoke with Gauld for Wired and shared five reasons Mooncop will be your new favorite graphic novel. Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie & Jeff Lemire tells story of the mistreatment of Canadian Indigenous children

The story of a 12-year old boy who died from hunger and exposure is the subject of a new project spearheaded by the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie with comic writer and illustrator Jeff Lemire. This multi-media production is a mix of poems, music, a graphic novel and animated film.

Lemire announces release dates for two projects

‘A.D.: After Death’ with Scott Snyder starts later this year, while ‘Roughnecks’ arrives in 2017.

Sweet Tooth and Trillium creator Jeff Lemire has revealed updated releases dates for projects he’s working on — A.D.: After Death with writer Scott Snyder from Image Comics and Roughneck, which he’s both writing and drawing himself, from Simon and Schuster’s new Gallery 13 imprint.

Announced back in January of 2015, A.D.: After Death tells the story of what happens when mankind cures death. A.D.: After Death will be serialized as three, oversized prestige format books written by Snyder and fully painted by Lemire. The first volume is due in November.

Planned trilogy by the creator of ‘Scott Pilgrim’ focuses on two new characters in Los Angeles.

Just as the Snotgirl ongoing series debuts this week by Bryan Lee O’Malley with artist Leslie Hung, Entertainment Weekly reveals more details on O’Malley’s next graphic novel, coming at an undisclosed date from Ballantine Books.
