Slugfest | Deadpool + Wolverine are together again in Marvel’s January solicitations

Marvel kicks off the new year with a new Cable series, Galactus, an amped up Power Man and more.

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you. This edition focuses on Marvel’s January solicitations, plus at least one project coming in February. Hit the links for more information.

Deadpool and Wolverine, you might remember, had a pretty big summer together, but the lovefest is far from over. In January Marvel will launch Deadpool/Wolverine by former Wolverine writer Benjamin Percy and his X-Force colleague Joshua Cassara.

“Josh and I really hit it off when we were working together on X-Force and became great friends,” Percy told IGN. “When he made the jump to X-Men, it was honestly a little traumatic for us both—but if you get the opportunity to draw a flagship title, you have to go for it. And he drew the living shit out of that series. We never stopped texting or hanging out at cons. We’re always trading stupid jokes (and many hundreds of Arnold Schwarzenegger GIFs). I even helped his wife locate one of the elusive 12-foot Home Depot skeletons recently, so we’ll both be celebrating Halloween like bosses. This is all to say: we were both so damn excited to get the band back together. Deadpool/Wolverine is us cartwheeling onto the stage and shredding our guitars once more while smoke machines churn and pyrotechnics explode all around us.”

‘Destro’ and ‘Scarlett’ land in the Energon Universe in June

Kelly Thompson, Marco Fereari, Dan Watters and Andrei Bressan continue to re-introduce the G.I. Joe and Cobra teams at Skybound.

Skybound’s Energon Universe will continue to grow in June with two more miniseries focused on characters from G.I. Joe — Scarlett by Kelly Thompson and Marco Ferrari, and Destro by Dan Watters and Andrei Bressan.

The two miniseries follow the recent series starring Cobra Commander and Duke, which brought characters from G.I. Joe into the larger shared universe that also includes Transformers and Void Rivals.

Duke and Cobra Commander were two of the highest-selling G.I. Joe comics of all time, and they’re only the start of our new beginning for the amazing G.I. Joe franchise,” said Skybound’s Sean Mackiewicz. “With G.I. Joe and Cobra now locked on an unavoidable collision course, Scarlett and Destro will introduce new characters and factions that will disrupt their most carefully laid plans. Kelly Thompson, Marco Ferrari, Dan Watters and my favorite madman, Andrei Bressan are crafting action-packed, jaw-dropping comics that will forever change the Energon Universe.”

Queue up for ‘Dark Ride’ by Williamson + Bressan

The ‘Birthright’ team reunites for a four-issue miniseries set in a horrific amusement park.

I was reading this Rolling Stone article about adult Disney fans being seen as a “plague upon society” when the press release for a new series called Dark Ride hit my inbox. Dark Ride is a new title coming from Skybound this fall by the Birthright team of Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan that “introduces readers to The Scariest Place on Earth.” And they don’t mean a Disney World filled with Disneybounding adults or Purple Wall selfie-takers.

“Two of my biggest obsessions have always been HORROR…and AMUSEMENT PARKS. So, I had to find a way to combine them into something new. It’s a dream book I’ve been working on for a LONG time and it’s been awesome to finally pull it together with Andrei and the whole Birthright team!” said Williamson. “It’s great to get back to horror after Nailbiter ended, and here we dive into some new themes with horror: What is scary in today’s world? How can you create something scary when every day we’re living in a horror show? Those are the themes I wanted to explore with DARK RIDE. Amusement Parks are meant to be a place of FUN…but here we really bring the HORROR.”

‘Justice League Incarnate’ spins out of ‘Infinite Frontier’ in November

Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver helm the miniseries featuring the multiverse’s Justice League.

Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver will follow up this summer’s Infinite Frontier miniseries with Justice League Incarnate, a five-issue oversized series. The first issue features artwork by Andrei Bressan and Brandon Peterson.

The series will feature the team made up of members from each world in the multiverse, including their recent addition, Flashpoint Batman, and a new character, Dr. Multiverse from Earth-8. Earth-8 is the Marvel-equivalent world that’s home to the Extremists and the Retaliators.
