DC Universe Infinite adds 5,000 Vertigo, Black Label titles

Subscribers to the “Ultra” tier can now access ‘The Books of Magic,’ ‘The Unwritten,’ ‘Shade the Changing Man’ and much more.

Despite the fact that DC shut down its Vertigo imprint at the end of 2019, the publisher still seems to find ways to keep the brand relevant, whether that’s by bringing back beloved properties like Fables and Sandman, or by adding more than 5,000 mature reader titles from the imprint to their DC Universe Infinite digital comics service.

Today Dc announced the addition of a “metric ton” of Vertigo titles to the service — everything from Sheriff of Babylon to Sandman Mystery Theatre — along with some more recent Black Label titles like Wonder Woman: Dead Earth and Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child. These new titles are only available to subscribers to the recently revealed Ultra tier, which also gives you access to new comics about a month after release.

The Corinthian faces venture capitalists in a new ‘Nightmare Country’ miniseries next year

The Sandman Universe series by James Tynion IV and Lisandro Estherren returns.

Nightmare Country, the Sandman Universe series featuring The Corinthian, will return next year as another miniseries — Nightmare Country: The Glass House. James Tynion IV and Lisandro Estherren, who worked on the previous series, will return.

“I’m thrilled to announce that Nightmare Country’s follow-up miniseries, The Glass House, is coming early in 2023,” said Tynion. “The Corinthian is going to be making his way to Silicon Valley, where he will go head-to-head with angels, demons and a breed of creature far more terrifying that anything he’s faced before—venture capitalists. Lisandro and I are excited to continue this nightmare tour through modern America and can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve got in store for you.”

King + Fornés + Stewart tell you how to get to ‘Danger Street’ in December

The DC Black Label miniseries will bring back concepts from the 1970s series ‘DC First Issue Special.’

The creative team behind DC’s Rorschach series will reunite in December for Danger Street, a new DC Black Label miniseries featuring a variety of DC characters in a “deeply layered crime drama.”

Tom King, Jorge Fornés and Dave Stewart are pulling their line-up for this one from an obscure 1970s title, DC First Issue Special. This was an oddball series where every issue was a first issue, introducing a brand new concept or re-imaging a dormant one that, conceivably, could then be spun off into its own series (although that only happened in a couple of cases).

Here’s a look at the Paul Dano/Stevan Subic ‘The Riddler: Year One’ project

Jim Lee and Paul Dano shared a preview during the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday.

As revealed during the Jim Lee & Friends panel in San Diego yesterday, DC has released preview pages and variant covers for The Riddler: Year One, the upcoming Black Label project by actor Paul Dano and artist Stevan Subic.

According to DC, “Dano’s story provides an in-depth look at how the unknown forensic accountant Edward Nashton evolved into the menace known as the Riddler and came so close to bringing down the entire city.” Dano of course played the character in The Batman.

‘Batman: Gotham Knights’ video game gets a prequel comic

‘Gilded City’ follows a mysterious virus that turns Gotham’s citizens into maniacs.

During Comic-Con today DC announced a prequel comic for their upcoming video game, Batman: Gotham Knights. Subtitled Gilded City, the comic is written by Evan Narcisse with art by ABEL.

The game features Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Robin in a Batman-less Gotham City. And following in the footsteps of the recent Batman crossover with Fortnite, each issue of the six-issue series will feature a code for in-game items.

Williamson + Leomacs go rogue on new DC Black Label title

The Flash’s villains take the spotlight as they go for one last, big heist — robbing Gorilla Grodd.

DC Comics has announced Rogues, the rare un-Batman project from DC’s Black Label imprint, by Joshua Williamson (Batman, Robin, Flash) and Leomacs (the wonderful Basketful of Heads).

The four-issue, prestige format series will feature the Flash’s rogue gallery 10 years after they disbanded, as Captain Cold brings them together for one more heist. And what a heist it is — he wants to rob Gorilla Grodd.

“Rogues is unlike anything I’ve done at DC,” said Williamson. “It’s closer to my own creator-owned works. It’s a crime book full of super-science, dark humor, lost civilizations, and crazy action set pieces, but it’s all played straight, with the dark edge and morality-play qualities of classic noir stories. Rogues takes everything we love about these classic characters and sends them violently crashing into a noir story that makes the ideal DC Black Label series.”

Lemire + Mahnke send Swamp Thing to ‘Green Hell’ in December

Alec Holland fights for the last humans alive in the new Black Label miniseries.

Jeff Lemire, Doug Mahnke and David Baron will take Swamp Thing to the end of the world in a new DC Black Label series, as Alec Holland fights for the fate of humanity in Swamp Thing: Green Hell.

The three-issue “prestige” series will debut Dec. 28.

Image Comics has announced a new six-issue Grrl Scouts miniseries from creator Jim Mahfood, titled Grrl Scouts: Stone Ghost. The first issue will arrive in November.

“I’m extremely excited about this new Grrl Scouts series and I think fans and new readers alike will be very entertained and definitely get a lot of bang for their buck with this one,” said Mahfood. “I’m introducing an entire new cast of characters, expanding on the mythology of the Grrl Scouts, and handling every aspect of the production of the book: writing, drawing, coloring, and lettering, to make this a very unique experience! DC celebrates 80 years of Wonder Woman with ‘Nubia and the Amazons’ + more

A new title featuring Wonder Woman’s sister headlines a slate of Wonder Woman projects arriving this fall.

DC Comics have announced several Wonder Woman projects for September and October, when they plan to pull out all the stops in celebrating the character’s 80th anniversary.

Wonder Woman debuted in the pages of All-Star Comics #8, which was published Oct. 21, 1941. Oct. 21, at least according to DC’s marketing department, is now known as “Wonder Woman Day” (although they have celebrated it at other times of the year as well).

October will bring the debut of at least one new Wonder Woman title, featuring her fellow Amazon Nubia, as well as an 80th anniversary special, an oversized issue of her regular title, a previously announced Black Label project, some free comics and more. Check’em out below.

‘Fables’ returns from DC Black Label for a crossover + a new 12-issue run

Bigby Wolf will meet Batman in a six-issue series this September as ‘Fables’ returns for a 12-issue run next May.

Fables, the long-running Vertigo series by Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha and many others, will make its return later this year and in 2022 with several new projects.

First, September brings Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham, a six-issue miniseries featuring Fables’ resident detective, Bigby Wolf, teaming up with Batman for a case in Gotham. It will be released under DC’s Black Label imprint. Willingham will work with Brain Level, Jay Leisten, and Lee Loughridge on the project.

“I’ve wanted to do this since the very first year of Fables,” Willingham said. “Why? Because Batman is a detective, and Bigby is a detective, and I love a well-crafted story crossing over characters from two different fictional worlds. It’s automatically a fish-out-of-water story for at least one of the main characters, and that sort of story always works. Plus, I knew from the very beginning of Fables that my fictional universe would allow for many ways to get Bigby Wolf into the DCU and Gotham City. Even though those cosmic story structures wouldn’t be introduced in the Fables books for a year or more, they were baked in from the very beginning.”

Superman takes on Lobo in a new Black Label title

‘Superman vs. Lobo’ by Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie and Mirka Andolfo will kick off in August.

If you’re a fan of Money Shot, the excellent, very adults only comic published by Vault Comics, then you’ll be happy to know its writers, Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie, are working on a Black Label title for DC featuring Superman and Lobo.

It’s called, naturally, Superman vs. Lobo, because why would they ever get along? And it features art by Mirka Andolfo, artist of Punchline, Mercy and Hex Wives, among other titles, with Arif Prianto.

‘Suicide Squad: Get Joker!’ will run for three issues, starting in July.

Brian Azzarello and Alex Maleev are sending the Suicide Squad on a somewhat personal mission for at least two of its member — to stop the Joker.
