New ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ one-shot coming from Miller, Grampa, Bellaire

‘Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child’ shows ‘the next generation of heroes in action.’

DC Comics has announced a new one-shot set in Frank Miller‘s Dark Knight Returns universe, Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child. Miller will be joined by artists Rafael Grampá and Jordie Bellaire in the follow-up to 2015’s Dark Knight III: Master Race.

According to the press release, the story takes place three years after the events of Master Race, where Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Carrie Kelley and Lara Kent overcame the renegade priest Quar and his cult of Kandorian fanatics in their bid to convert humanity into worshipping them as gods. During this interim, Lara has spent time learning about what it means to be human, while Carrie has grown into her role as Gotham City’s new protector, Batwoman.

 “The Dark Knight Returns story began with its heroes getting older,” said Miller. “Now we’re seeing the next generation of heroes in action, and Rafael was the obvious choice for me to usher in these heroes that are vigorous, untested and loaded with promise. I think that Jonathan Kent in particular will surprise everybody with his unforeseen abilities and impossible mind.”

BOOM! opens the ‘Hellmouth’ in their first Buffy/Angel crossover

Five-issue miniseries featuring the Joss Whedon-created characters debuts in October.

BOOM! Studios will bring Joss Whedon’s power couple, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, together again for the first time in the pages of Hellmouth. The five-issue miniseries is about, naturally, the end of the world.

Jordie Bellaire, who writes the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, will team up with Jeremy Lambert of Doom Patrol and Goosebumps fame to write the series. They’re joined by artist Eleonora Carlini, who previous worked on BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics.

The crossover series features the latest renditions of the characters, who don’t have quite the history that they did in the TV show and Dark Horse line of comics. BOOM! rebooted the characters to a high school setting when they picked up the license, so this will be Buffy and Angel’s first meeting, as editor Jeanine Schaefer explains.

Bellaire, Mora put a stake in BOOM!’s new ‘Buffy’ title

BOOM! Studios will relaunch ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ in January in stories set at Sunnydale High.

Following the announcement that BOOM! Studios obtained the license to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the publisher announced this weekend that writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora will work with Buffy creator Joss Whedon on the title.

“Buffy has brought my life so much joy and to be part of that now is ridiculously overwhelming on many levels,” Bellaire said. “My very favorite aspect of Buffy is how we have a wide group of characters that love each other, hurt each other and sometimes, they even kill each other. I can’t wait to dabble within that universe to find new stories, explore older ones and forever maintain the theme of self discovery and growing up, whatever that means.”

Marvel cancels Cain, Mohan, Koch’s ‘The Vision’ miniseries

This decision comes a month before retailers’ orders for the first issue were due.

Chelsea Cain’s second Marvel series has been canceled before it had a chance to even begin. Newsarama reports that The Vision, by Cain, her husband Marc Mohan and artists Aud Koch and Jordie Bellaire, will no longer arrive in November, the month for which it was previously solicited.

The new miniseries, which was announced this past summer in San Diego, would have followed in the same vein as Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s critically praised run on the character, which introduced his family, including Viv Vision, who currently appears in The Champions. This decision comes a month before retailers’ orders for the first issue were due.

Chelsea Cain to write new ‘Vision’ series for Marvel

The novelist teams up with her husband for a series about Vision and his family.

Chelsea Cain will team up with her husband and fellow writer Marc Mohan for a new series at Marvel starring the Vision and his family. Ultimates 2 artist Aud Koch joins the duo, while Marcos Martin (The Private Eye) will provide covers. And Jordie Bellaire, who colored the previous Vision series, is here for this one as well.

Superman puts his pants back on for ‘Action’ #1000

Milestone issue will include new stories by Brian Michael Bendis, Jim Lee, Curt Swan, Marv Wolfman, Paul Dini, Brad Meltzer, John Cassaday, Scott Snyder and more.

The world returns to sanity again in April with the landmark Action Comics #1000, which features a slew of creators telling tales about Superman and, more importantly, the return of his famous red trunks.

Debuting in Action Comics #1 way back in 1938, the red trunks helped Clark Kent’s alter-ego fight for truth, justice and the American way for almost a century — that is, until the launch of the New 52 in 2010. Dc co-publisher Jim Lee redesigned many DC characters at the time, including Superman — and the new, super-hip redesign had no room for outside undies or his classic red boots. The move was controversial, just like any change to the status quo in superhero comics, and eventually spawned petitions from fans to return to the classic look. Now it looks like those voices have finally been heard by DC.

“Action Comics #1000 represents a watershed moment in the history of not just comic books, but entertainment, literature and pop culture,” said Lee. “There’s no better way to celebrate Superman’s enduring popularity than to give him a look that combines some new accents with the most iconic feature of his classic design.”

New series from Image imagines a world that is ‘chaotic, beautiful and repulsive’ — and has no secure internet.

Gerry Duggan, David O’Sullivan and Jordie Bellaire are imagining a world without a secure internet in Analog, a new series from Image Comics coming next year.

“David O’Sullivan is lushly rendering a world that is chaotic, beautiful and repulsive, sometimes on the same page,” said Duggan, writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, Last Christmas and many other comics. “He and Jordie Bellaire are the perfect collaborators to leap over this post-fascist tale of the great crash of the information age.”

Bellaire, del Rey’s ‘Redlands’ offers deep-fried witchy noir

Image conjures up the new title in August.

Originally announced at the Emerald City Comicon, Image Comics has released more information about Redlands by Jordie Bellaire and artist Vanesa R. del Rey.

“Redlands is my sick, weird love letter to Stephen King, Florida and Riot Grrrls everywhere but ultimately, hate mail for everything else,” Bellaire said in a press release. “Inspired by the strange complexities of real world politics and crime, the characters of Redlands play victim and villain, attempting to understand themselves and others, through murder, magic and mayhem.”

Image announces everything and the kitchen sink at ECCC

New projects from Ales Kot, Joe Casey, Joe Keatinge, Declan Shalvey, Matt Wagner, Jeff Lemire, Phil Hester and more announced at Emerald City Comic Con.

For the past few years Image Comics has held an Image Expo, which is kind of their own mini-convention where they feature creators and make announcements. Since they ended up skipping it this year (it’ll be back in 2018) they used their Thursday panel at the Emerald City Comic Con to unleash a huge slew of comic book announcements.

‘Nowhere Men’ returns with new artist Dave Taylor

Taylor takes over as artist from Nate Bellegrade with issue #7, which arrives in January.

Nowhere Men, the “scientists-as-rock-stars” comic by Image co-publisher Eric Stephenson, artist Nate Bellegrade and Einser award-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire, will return in January with a new artist, Dave Taylor (Batman: Death by Design, Judge Dredd, Prophet).

“It’s very cool to work on something you admire,” Taylor said in the press release. “My respect for the first series is making me work extra hard to fulfil Eric’s concept to the end, in fact, this is the best work I’ve done for years.”
