Chip Zdarsky + Marco Checchetto re-team for ‘Avengers’

Earth’s mightiest heroes get a new title and line-up starting in November.

Marvel has announced that Chip Zdarsky’s work on Avengers: Armageddon will lead into the launch of a new Avengers title, slated to debut in November. The writer will once again team up with Marco Checchetto, who worked with Zdarsky on a pretty great Daredevil run.

“It’s obviously a massive honor getting to write the world’s greatest super hero team,” Zdarsky said “And after what happens in Avengers: Armageddon, this lineup is angry as hell and ready to avenge.”

The book will feature a very Bendis-esque line-up, with mainstay Captain Marvel teaming with Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil and “an all-new hero set to make their explosive debut soon.” If you’ve been reading Zdarsky’s Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon or Captain America, you probably have a guess as to who that “newcomer” will be. Editor Will Moss also teased there may be more than who we’re seeing here, too.

Spidey and friends face a ‘Gang War’ this winter

Marvel’s big winter event will find Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Luke Cage and all of New York caught in a war between gang lords, Hydra, AIM and more.

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, Executive Editor Nick Lowe, Amazing Spider-Man writer Zeb Wells and more were on hand in San Diego at Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel to announce Gang War, a crossover event springing from Wells’ work with John Romita Jr. on ASM.

The gang lords of New York, including the Owl, Hobgoblin and Mr. Negative, as well as factions like AIM and Hydra, will wage war against each other, and it’ll be up to two Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, as well as She-Hulk, Spider-Woman and Daredevil to stop them.

The event will cross into Amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales: Spider-Man, while Daredevil, Spider-Woman, Shang-Chi and Mayor Luke Cage will star in spinoff minseries.

Ho Che Anderson says ‘Luke Cage: City of Fire’ has been cancelled

The Devil’s Reign tie-in comic was supposed to debut in December.

The writer of the Luke Cage: City of Fire miniseries has said that Marvel has cancelled the series before its debut.

Ho Che Anderson posted last week that the Devil’s Reign tie-in miniseries, which was set to kick off on Dec. 29, is “dead in the water.”

“No easy way to say this,” Anderson said on Instagram. “I got the word Luke Cage got cancelled this morning, one month away from its premiere. The scripts are all written. The first issue is done and is a thing of absolute beauty. Issues 2 and 3 are deep into production. Covers have been drawn. People have gotten excited, and with good reason as far as I’m concerned. I remain as proud of this as any work I’ve ever done. Maybe someday it will be seen. But as of today this comic is dead in the water. If you want answers I am not the man to ask. My heart is broken. I’m taking a social media break to lick my wounds. Somewhere god is having a chuckle.”

Ho Che Anderson to write ‘Luke Cage: City of Fire’ this fall

The writer of ‘King’ and ‘Godhead’ teams up with three different artists for the three-issue miniseries.

Ho Che Anderson, writer of King, Sand & Fury and Godhead, will team up with three different artists for a three-issue miniseries starring Luke Cage this fall. Luke Cage: City of Fire finds Harlem’s hero taking on “a shadowy rogue group” called the Regulators, who have ties to NYC Mayor Wilson Fisk.

Farid Karami will draw the first issue, with Ray-Anthony Height doing issue #2 and Sean Damien Hill drawing issue #3.

“I can’t express how excited I am to be doing a project with Marvel, and about the level of talent they’ve lined up to work on it with me,” said Anderson. “I have been given the freedom to explore a subject I’m so passionate about through the lens of characters I’ve loved since I was a kid, and I fully intend to work overtime to make sure the results are worthy of the trust I’ve been granted. Fortunately, the heavy lifting will be accomplished by my incredible collaborators who’ll make me look better than I am!”

Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daughters of the Dragon get ‘Digital Originals’ series

Marvel’s Netflix stars get new digital titles aimed at TV binge-watchers.

Following the somewhat stealthy release of Jessica Jones last Wednesday as the first of a new Marvel Digital Originals line, over the weekend Marvel announced via IGN three new digital titles coming later this year.

Jessica Jones will be joined by new titles featuring Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Daughters of the Dragon. In addition, the already-started Cloak and Dagger digital series by writer Dennis Hopeless and artist David Messina has joined the line-up as well. Given that these comics are aimed at people who discover the characters on television, the titles make sense. I’m guessing at some point we might see Daredevil, Punisher and Runaways join the line.
