Doom assembles his own Avengers team in ‘Superior Avengers’

The six-issue miniseries ties into ‘One World Under Doom’ and kicks off in April.

In the spirit of Dark Avengers, Doctor Doom will assemble his own team of Avengers during the One World Under Doom crossover event that officially kicks off next month.

The six-issue Superior Avengers by Steve Foxe and Luca Maresca will bring together a team sporting the names of familiar villains, as they help implement Doom’s new world order.

“Introducing any new character to the Marvel Universe—let alone an entire cast of them—is both an honor and no small terror, so when editor Wil Moss reached out about developing an intense, secretive team of Avengers for One World Under Doom, I knew I had to swing for the fences,” Foxe said. “The Avengers that readers are going to meet here may have familiar names, but you’ll quickly come to learn why they consider themselves superior to other teams. This book features some of the most ruthless, wide-scale action I’ve ever written at Marvel, and I’m so thrilled to be telling this story alongside Luca Maresca. Luca nails both the subtler mind games at play in our story and the (sometimes literally) breakneck action.”

NYCC | James Tynion IV, Steve Foxe + Piotr Kowalski explore the legend of the Jersey Devil at Dark Horse

Tynion’s ‘True Weird’ stories continue in a new miniseries next year.

James Tynion IV has shown his affection for “True Weird” stories — stories of UFOs, cryptids and other stories about people’s real-world encounters with the unexplained — in the past, most recently on his Substack newsletter and through titles like Blue Book. These stories will continue on at Dark Horse, starting with Let This One Be A Devil next February.

Tynion is teaming up with co-writer Steve Foxe, artist Piotr Kowalski, colorist Brad Simpson and letterer Tom Napolitano on the four-issue miniseries. It’ll also feature a “True Weird” back-up story by Rachel Deering, with art by Jesse Lonergan and lettering by Aditya Bidikar.

“Starting with Blue Book, the beating heart of the Tiny Onion publishing program with Dark Horse has been the exploration of what I call ‘True Weird’ stories–comics based on the real stories of encounters with the strange and impossible,” said Tynion. “Let This One Be a Devil is the first in a whole new set of titles in our True Weird library at Dark Horse, in which we’ll tell the stories inspired by the accounts that brought figures like the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, and The Loch Ness Monster into the public consciousness. This is just the beginning.”

Slugfest | ‘Timeslide’ into Marvel’s December solicitations

December brings new comics featuring Cable, Bishop, the new Infinity Watch, Sabretooth and more.

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you. This edition focuses on Marvel’s December solicitations. Hit the links for more information.

Marvel’s made a tradition of releasing a year-end one-shot in December that is usually one part complete story, one part preview of what to expect from the publisher in the next year. (It usually involves some sort of time travel angle as well).

This year’s edition is titled Timeslide, and in a year of big change for the X-Men line, it makes sense that this year’s story will feature Cable and Bishop, the X-Men’s resident time travelers. It’s by Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli, and features a cover by Kael Ngu:

Steve Foxe, Edgar Salazar + Peter Nguyen bring five-star terror to a luxury resort in ‘Alien: Paradiso’

Marvel + 20th Century Studios present a nightmare vacation scenario this December.

A group of hyper-wealthy criminals living it up on a luxury planet get some uninvited guests in Alien: Paradiso, a new miniseries coming from Marvel’s 20th Century Studios imprint this December.

Writer Steve Foxe is working with Edgar Salazar on the five-issue miniseries, which will also feature “special Xenomorph point of view pages” drawn by Peter Nguyen. (Why is this not a Red Band book?)

For his part, Foxe says he was looking to do something different with his contribution to the franchise, which recently got a back-to-basics reboot in this summer’s Alien: Romulus.

“With Romulus taking the franchise back to its roots in many respects, I wanted to make sure we were offering readers a story they couldn’t find anywhere else,” Foxe said. “Setting our tale on the sun-kissed shores of a high-end beach resort populated by underhanded criminals, undercover marshals, and underpaid employees immediately spun us in a new direction.”

Marvel’s newest teen heroes assemble in ‘New Champions’

Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli helm a new series featuring the heroes who appeared in recent issues of ‘Spider-Woman.’

Last year Marvel released a series of “New Champions” variant covers where they asked different artists to design new sidekicks for Marvel characters, following the debut of Spider-Boy. At the time I remarked that it seemed odd for Marvel to create all these characters just for a set of variant covers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some of them again.

And we have — in the pages of Spider-Woman (as The Assembly), Ultimate X-Men and the upcoming Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special. And now we will see many of them again, as they assemble for a New Champions series by Steve Foxe and Ivan Fiorelli.

“As soon as I saw the New Champions variants, my mind started racing dreaming up possible origins and powers and codenames for these imagined sidekicks,” Foxe said. “Reverse-engineering the cast from the covers was unlike any other creative process I’ve ever been involved in, and I’m beyond stoked to debut a whole new class of Marvel heroes (and a few villains!) in New Champions alongside Ivan Fiorelli, who makes each and every one of these new additions feel like they’ve been part of the fabric of the universe all along.”

It’s mutant vs. mutant this summer as Apocalypse looks for an heir

‘X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse’ by Steve Foxe and Netho Diaz begins in June.

Apocalypse, one of the pillars of those early Krakoa issues, will gather 12 mutants together for a tournament this summer to determine who gets to take his spot as he moves on to his new duties on Arakko.

X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse by writer Steve Foxe and artist Netho Diaz will see Armageddon Girl, Cable, Cypher, Emma Frost, Exodus, Forge, Gorgon, Mirage, Mr. Sinister, Penance, Rictor and Laura Kinney face off for the fate of mutantkind.

“The shadow of Apocalypse has loomed large over not just the Krakoan Era, but a substantial percentage of mutant-focused storytelling since his debut in 1986,” Foxe said. “These past few years have shown so many new facets of En Sabah Nur, and my Krakoan peers aren’t done with him quite yet. So it’s both an immense honor and a ton of pressure to step up to the slab for Heir of Apocalypse, which charts a new path for his legacy in the years to come.”

Marvel announces ‘Blood Hunt’ one-shots for Magik, Psylocke, Jubilee + Wolverine

The X-Men will enter the vampire apocalypse, just not all together.

Four of Marvel’s mutants are getting one-shot tie-ins to this summer’s big Blood Hunt crossover event, including Psylocke, Magik, Jubilee and Wolverine — no, not him, the other Wolverine, Laura Kinney.

According to Marvel.com, the reason for the solo one-shots is story driven –“This bloodbath of terror couldn’t come at a more dire time for mutantkind. Currently scattered after the fall of Krakoa, the X-Men won’t be able to strike from a united front.”

So instead, four of them will go solo — one who is a former vampire, and three who are really good at stabbing things. But all of this is happening after Fall of the House of X and, it sounds like, before the launch of the Tom Brevoort-edited X-Men: From the Ashes, which we don’t really know anything about except that it’ll be previewed on Free Comic Book Day.

Anyway, here’s a rundown of the four one-shots, which leaves us with two as-yet-unrevealed one-shot tie-ins that’ll be announced tomorrow.

X-Men ’97 comic leads into the Disney+ show

Steve Foxe and Salva Espín return to the world of ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ in a new miniseries.

Steve Foxe and Salva Espín, the duo behind Marvel’s X-Men ’92: House of XCII, will reunite for another miniseries based on the animated mutants — a four-issue X-Men ’97 series that leads into the upcoming animated show on Disney+.

“There’s a very good chance I wouldn’t be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid—heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!” Foxe said. “Getting to reunite with my X-Men ’92: House of XCII collaborator Salva Espín on this official prelude to X-Men ’97 has felt like a bucket-list project a lifetime in the making, and Beau [DeMayo] and the rest of the ’97 team gave us a fantastic runway to come up with our own original tale that feeds right into what viewers will get to experience in the new season.”

After Krakoa falls, the ‘Dead X-Men’ rise

Steve Foxe, Vincenzo Carratù, Bernard Chang and Jonas Scharf send a group of dead mutants back in time to save their world.

This past weekend brought news on the future — or lack of one — for the X-Men’s Krakoa era, and following the big reveal of three new miniseries that will tie everything up, Marvel has announced a fourth tie-in miniseries — Dead X-Men.

There’s probably a joke to make here about the past three or so years under the Krakoa banner and its resurrection protocols — I mean, aren’t most of the X-Men technically dead at this point, with cloned copies walking around with their memories? But I digress …

Steve Foxe and a host of artists have been tapped for a Terminator-esque story where Professor X sends a group of five X-Men back in time to try and prevent the destruction of Krakoa, as detailed in this year’s Hellfire Gala special.

“Dead X-Men is one of the most complex stories I’ve worked on at Marvel, but also one of purest: a small group of mutants who have to accomplish the impossible, which is the premise that made me fall in love with the X-Men in the first place,” Foxe said. He’ll be working with several artists on the series, including Vincenzo Carratù, Bernard Chang and Jonas Scharf.

Foxe + Borelli’s ‘Spider-Woman’ will continue the fight after ‘Gang War’

The new series begins in November.

This is good news: the “Gang War” Spider-Woman miniseries that was announced at Comic-Con is actually an ongoing series. Steve Foxe and Carola Borelli will continue to tell stories about Jessica Drew after the events of Gang War (which will be the subject of the first four issues).

“Jessica Drew has been my favorite Marvel heroine since I was a kid,” Foxe said. “From the instantly classic costume to her complex backstory, there’s just so much to her. She’s a spy, a street-smart detective, a superheroic best friend, an Avenger, a Spider-Verse-hopper, a mother and a survivor. Getting the chance to do it alongside Carola, as well as Eric Koda on our prologue, has been bioelectric heaven.”

Spidey and friends face a ‘Gang War’ this winter

Marvel’s big winter event will find Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Luke Cage and all of New York caught in a war between gang lords, Hydra, AIM and more.

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, Executive Editor Nick Lowe, Amazing Spider-Man writer Zeb Wells and more were on hand in San Diego at Marvel’s Next Big Thing panel to announce Gang War, a crossover event springing from Wells’ work with John Romita Jr. on ASM.

The gang lords of New York, including the Owl, Hobgoblin and Mr. Negative, as well as factions like AIM and Hydra, will wage war against each other, and it’ll be up to two Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, as well as She-Hulk, Spider-Woman and Daredevil to stop them.

The event will cross into Amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales: Spider-Man, while Daredevil, Spider-Woman, Shang-Chi and Mayor Luke Cage will star in spinoff minseries.

Here’s a look at the new characters debuting in ‘Marvel’s Voices: Pride’

Nightshade, Muzzle, Dark X-Men and more will appear in this year’s special.

As previously mentioned, this year’s Marvel’s Voices: Pride special will continue the tradition set by previous volumes and introduce new characters — specifically a new symbiote, a new Nightshade and a third character with a “fascinating” origin.

In the past, Marvel has used the Pride special introduced characters like Escapade and Somnus, two characters who have since appeared in Marauders and New Mutants. So there’s no telling where this year’s debuting characters could pop up next.
