‘Devil’s Reign Omega’ paves the way for a new ‘Daredevil’ series in June

Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto will continue to tell stories about Matt Murdock and Elektra after the event series ends.

Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto will continue their epic run on Daredevil following the end of Devil’s Reign, as both Matt Murdock and Elektra will star in a new title that promises “the darkest Hell’s Kitchen to date.”

Marvel gave the Daredevil comic a break as the two creators turned their attention to Devil’s Reign, the current event series featuring Mayor Kingpin trying to ban, blackmail and arrest all New York City superheroes. But following the end of the big event, Daredevil will be back in June with a new first issue.

“This is the start of our fourth year on the title! And the plan for it is about as big a swing as we could possibly take,” Zdarsky told Marvel.com. “I’m super excited for readers to see where we’re taking our Daredevils!”

“It’s the first time that I’ve to draw the first issue of the same series twice. I could tell you it’s an issue like everyone else, now, but it’s not,” Checcetto said. “Each time I’ve to draw a new script of Daredevil it’s a new experience. Chip keeps throwing at me new challenges and I’m not the type of artist to refuse them. How much more can we mess up with Matt Murdock’s life? Let’s see with this new Daredevil #1.”

Before we get there, though, there are still several issues of Devil’s Reign left — including the recent announced Omega issue, which will serve as the epilogue the miniseries.

“There are so many changes coming out of Devil’s Reign that I actually breathed a sigh of relief when Marvel said I could have this one-shot,” Zdarsky said in his Substack newsletter. “We’ll be setting the table for the future of Marvel’s New York here, so it’s gonna be REQUIRED READING, CLASS sorry!!!”

That’s fine with me — this is one of Marvel’s best events in recent memory, even with the weird Doctor Octopus “Superior Four” subplot. It’s like they’ve somehow taken all the good ideas from Civil War and turned them into something that’s well thought out and rooted in the characters, and what it’s like living in the Marvel Universe at large. Anyway, artist Rafael De Latorre will join Zdarsky on Devil’s Reign Omega, which sounds like it might have more than one story in it as it sets up the future for Elektra, Kingpin, the new Thunderbolts — and of course Daredevil.

“Getting to write Daredevil and work with Marco is a career highlight. I’m just genuinely excited that we get to continue our epic story with this new issue one!” Zdarsky said. “Matt and Elektra have confronted their past mistakes with Devil’s Reign and Woman Without Fear, but can they atone for them together?”

Devil’s Reign Omega comes out in May, while the new Daredevil #1 arrives in June.
