DC’s full Free Comic Book Day line-up for 2023

‘Knight Terrors,’ middle-grade graphic novels and more get the free comic treatment this month.

DC Comics has revealed all the free comics you can get this coming Saturday as part of the annual Free Comic Book Day event.

The publisher will release five free titles during May, some of which won’t be released on FCBD but all of which will be available digitally via DC Universe Infinite. Most of them are also showing up on Comixology’s new release page for Saturday, in case you miss getting them from a store.

Here’s a rundown on what to look for …

Dawn of DC Knight Terrors 2023 FCBD Special Edition

DC’s big summer crossover event gets a preview in this Knight Terrors special, which will also include new DC work from Chris Bachalo — his first in more than 20 years. The next Dawn of DC event takes place in July and August, and will feature a host of two-issue miniseries, each spotlighting a hero or villain confronting their worst nightmares in a “Nightmare Realm.” The FCBD issue will include a new story starring Damian Wayne by Joshua Williamson, Howard Porter and Bachalo. “After a long night of crime-fighting with his father, Batman, Damian sleeps—but horrors invade his teenage dreams. Damian has seen a lot, but there is something different about this nightmare.”

Clark & Lex/Fann Club: Batman Squad, Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story

DC will also have two FCBD titles aimed at younger readers. From the publisher:

Fans of Middle Grade storytelling will be treated to a double preview of Clark & Lex, by New York Times bestselling author Brendan Reichs and artist Jerry Gaylord, and Fann Club: Batman Squad, from bestselling writer-illustrator Jim Benton. Available at all participating comic book stores, booksellers, and mass-market retailers/e-tailers, the full version of Fann Club: Batman Squad launches June 6, 2023, followed by Clark & Lex on July 4.

In an additional sampler, fans can check out an excerpt from Shadow of the Batgirl and Heroine Complex writer Sarah Kuhn’s upcoming graphic novel Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story. Featuring lively art by Arielle Jovellanos, this charming young adult story celebrates the strength it takes to embrace life’s messiness as small-town Lois Lane tackles a summer in the big city with gusto, meeting all the challenges that come her way.

Dawn of DC We Are Legends Special Edition

According to DC, the Dawn of DC We Are Legends Special Edition arrived this past Tuesday, “spotlighting new series headlined by Asian and South Asian heroes, from Asian writers and artists.” DC announced three new titles spinning out of Lazarus Planet that would arrive during AAPI Heritage Month. This special includes reprints of the first appearances of Spirit World’s Xanthe in Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate #1, the Vigil in Lazarus Planet: Next Evolution #1, and City Boy in Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn #1. All three titles arrive later this month.

Then on May 16, DC will release the Dawn of DC Primer, which “reveals the threats, secrets and connective stories from DC’s biggest event of 2023, written by Dawn of DC architect Joshua Williamson with art by Leandro Fernandez.” It’ll also include Secret Files pages and behind-the-scenes content.

Free Comic Book Day will take place this coming Saturday at participating comic shops.
