Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, which was reincarnated in the recent Ultimate Invasion miniseries, will grow next year with three new titles, following the Ultimate Universe one-shot coming Nov. 1.
Spider-Man, Black Panther and the X-Men will get new Ultimate titles in this “world outside your window” approach architected by Jonathan Hickman.
“What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?” Hickman said back in June. “It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of super heroes in a brand-new world is a really fascinating exercise.”
Hickman himself will write one of the titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, while Bryan Hill will write the first-ever Ultimate Black Panther series.
“I was invigorated by this opportunity because in addition to my immense respect for Jonathan Hickman’s detailed storytelling, the idea of shepherding this bold new take on Black Panther in this event gives me a platform to do the kind of broad, epic, storytelling I’ve always wanted to do in comics,” Hill said. “My influences range from the history of Black Panther comics to Ryan Coogler’s incredible work with the recent films, to Frank Herbert’s worldbuilding capacity of Dune. This is something people won’t expect, in the best of ways, and full credit to Marvel and editors Wil Moss and Michelle Marchese for bringing this creative possibility to me.”
Peach Momoko, meanwhile, has written her own version of the X-Men before when she re-imagined them through a Japanese folklore filter. She will write and draw Ultimate X-Men, which will feature both new versions of classic X-Men, as well as brand new characters.
“I am also very proud (and surprised) that I was given enough freedom from C.B. Cebulski and Jonathan Hickman to create a brand-new X-Men character,” Momoko said. “It might not be the normal portrayal of a super hero…but I am excited to introduce everyone to a new chapter to my Momoko-verse.”
