NYCC | ‘Ultimate Wolverine’ is the Maker’s ultimate weapon in a new series coming next year

Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio’s ‘Ultimate Wolverine’ will launch in January 2025

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is getting a new but familiar addition this January, as today at the New York Comic Con the publisher announced Ultimate Wolverine by the team of Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio.

Like many of the inhabitants of the Ultimate Universe, Wolverine’s a bit different in this universe than he is in the 616. Sporting the codename “The Winter Soldier,” this Wolverine isn’t in control of himself — he’s an agent of three members of the Maker’s council, Magik, Colossus and Omega Red. To ensure they maintain control of a world that now has superheroes running around and causing a raucous, they unleash him to do all those things that he’s best at.

“When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it,” said Condon. “I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new.”

(If you haven’t read That Texas Blood, by the way, it’s one of my first go-to “This is the comic you should be reading” recommendations whenever someone asks.)

The Guardians of the Galaxy will land in the Ultimate Universe in January

Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri introduce a new but familiar team to the Ultimate Universe.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to the Ultimate Universe — or at least a new version of the team is. Star-Lord, Captain Marvel, Cosmo and the Ultimate Nullifier will make their debut in January’s The Ultimate #8 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri.

The story in that issue will focus on America Chavez, as a group of galactic travelers “from a far-flung, Maker-free future” show up looking for her.

“The creative goal we set for ourselves on Ultimates—in addition to telling complete stories every issue—was to create (or recreate) characters interesting enough to sustain readers’ imaginations and their own series, if they had to,” Camp said. “Whether we’ve succeeded on either count is up to the readers to decide, but the reaction so far has been really special. I am so grateful for it, and am doing my best to be worthy of it.”

SDCC | Deniz Camp to write ‘Ultimate Universe: One Year In’ one-shot

Marvel says ‘Happy birthday’ to the Ultimate Universe this December.

The Ultimate Universe returned last year, and then really kicked into gear in 2024 with the launches of Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Black Panther and the latest title, The Ultimates. Marvel will mark the end of the first full year of titles with Ultimate Universe: One Year In, a one-shot coming in December.

Written by Deniz Camp and featuring a cover by Stefano Caselli, the artist for the project was not announced when Marvel revealed it was coming today in San Diego. But it will heavily feature the Maker’s Council, the villains who secretly rule the world, as well as the debut of the Ultimate versions of two characters.

“Kind of brings together the entire universe, fills in some history, ties back to a bunch of what we’ve been doing in Ultimates, and introduces a character or two people have been clamoring for,” Camp said on social media.

Deniz Camp + Juan Frigeri relaunch ‘The Ultimates’ in June

A familiar title returns as a part of Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe line.

Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe line will get a familiar addition this summer, as The Ultimates, featuring an Avenger-esque team with Iron Lad, Captain America, Thor, Sif and more, will debut from the team of writer Deniz Camp and artist Juan Frigeri.

The title joins Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Black Panther as part of the Jonathan Hickman-architected line-up of what could arguably be called Marvel’s most exciting launch in quite awhile.

“The new Ultimates line is the most exciting super hero comics event in years, and it’s humbling to be a part of it,” Camp said. “We are reinventing these classic characters and archetypes to be as surprising and vital as when they were first introduced. Our Ultimates is an evolution not just of the Avengers, but of the whole super hero team concept; from the grand and operatic to the small and personal, The Ultimates will feel like no Avengers or Ultimates comic ever before! That’s our ambition, anyway; tune in to find out if we succeed.“

‘Ultimate X-Men’ will feature Armor, Maystorm and more

Peach Momoko will offer a completely new take on the X-Men next year.

Readers of Ultimate Universe #1, which arrived in stores today, not only learned more about Jonathan Hickman’s approach to this new take on the Marvel Universe, but also saw preview pages from Peach Momoko’s upcoming Ultimate X-Men.

(And if you missed them, no worries — you’ll find them at the bottom of this post).

In conjunction with the release, Marvel has revealed more details on the title, which Momoko will both write and draw, and which will offer a very different take on Marvel’s merry mutants — something more like manga or the Demon Days stories she did at Marvel.

The two characters featured in the preview, for instance, aren’t pulled from the original five, who were first introduced in the 1960s, or even the “new X-Men” introduced in the 1970s — they’re Armor, a character introduced in 2004, at least in the beginning, and Maystorm, a new character who was created as part of a line of variant covers.

Spider-Man is older, ‘wiser,’ a husband + dad in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’

Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s new series will give Spider-Man’s marriage more than one more day.

Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s Ultimate Spider-Man will “zag” instead of “zig” when it debuts in January. Instead of taking the approach of the original Ultimate Universe, where Spider-Man was rebooted as a teenager, they plan to present an older Spider-Man, who is married with a family.

So it’s more Renew Your Vows, less Miles Morales.

“When we decided that we were going to do a book about an older Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man, we really wanted to lean into him starting his super hero life from a very different place than what’s traditionally expected,” Hickman told Marvel.com. “Peter and MJ being married is one of many decisions we made that underline this being quite a ‘different’ kind of Spider-Man story.”

Marvel announces three more ‘Ultimate’ titles for 2024

Peach Momoko, Bryan Hill, Stefano Caselli and more will contribute to the resurrected Ultimate Universe.

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, which was reincarnated in the recent Ultimate Invasion miniseries, will grow next year with three new titles, following the Ultimate Universe one-shot coming Nov. 1.

Spider-Man, Black Panther and the X-Men will get new Ultimate titles in this “world outside your window” approach architected by Jonathan Hickman.

“What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?” Hickman said back in June. “It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of super heroes in a brand-new world is a really fascinating exercise.”

Hickman himself will write one of the titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, while Bryan Hill will write the first-ever Ultimate Black Panther series.

‘Ultimate Invasion’ sets the stage for a new Ultimate Universe

Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch are setting the table for a superhero universe that’s a ‘reflection of the world outside your window.’

Marvel’s upcoming Ultimate Invasion miniseries won’t just revisit the previous incarnation of the Ultimate Universe — it will also set up a new Ultimate Universe, according to creators Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch.

“What made the Ultimate Universe originally really interesting was that it was a reflection of the world outside your window, in the moment that you were living in. What does it look like in the world we’re living in now?” Hickman said during a call with retailers yesterday. “It’s kind of shocking how much the world has changed in that period of time. The idea of what it would be like to see the genesis of super heroes in a brand-new world is a really fascinating exercise.”

The Ultimate Invasion miniseries, which kicks off June 21, will run through September. Then in November, Marvel will release a one-shot, Ultimate Universe #1 by Hickman and Stefano Caselli:
