‘M.A.S.K.’ #3 delivers a surprise for the Energon Universe

Skybound and Hasbro expand the shared universe with a new arrival from classic toy history.

The Energon Universe just added another piece to its growing puzzle.

M.A.S.K. #3, which arrived in stores yesterday, introduced a major character from another classic Hasbro property into the shared universe.

Yes, that’s the infamous Micronauts villain Baron Karza, making his first appearance in the shared universe in M.A.S.K. #3 by Dan Watters, Pye Parr, Pierluigi Casolino and Rus Wooton. The surprise debut reveals that M.A.S.K. villain Miles Mayhem has a mysterious new ally as he plots his next move against Matt Trakker and his son Scotty, and that ally is none other than the armored despot of the Microverse.

And maybe it’s not too much of a surprise, given that we’ve seen ROM pop up in the shared universe already. Both Micronauts and ROM are Hasbro properties that have a rich history in comics, starting with their titles at Marvel in the 1980s that integrated them into the Marvel Universe. Once ROM appeared, the question about seeing the Micronuats became less of an “if” and more of a “when.”

Skybound is already planning to reprint the issue.

“The record-setting launch of M.A.S.K. shocked and delighted fans, and we’re continuing the exciting momentum with the reprint of this monumental third issue,” said Executive Editor Ben Abernathy. “With the introduction of the mysterious Baron Karza, who knows what could happen next!”

With G.I. Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K., ROM and Micronauts all appearing in the Energon Universe, you do have to wonder who’s next? Who’s left from Hasbro’s line-up? Could the GoBots arrive? Mr. Potato Head? Is Mr. Monopoly funding Cobra? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
