NYCC | Second Stranger Things + Dungeons & Dragons miniseries will debut next year

‘The Rise of Hellfire’ reveals the secret origin of Eddie Munson and his D&D group.

Dark Horse Comics has announced a second Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons miniseries, set to arrive in stores next year. Subtitled The Rise of Hellfire, the series will explore the D&D origins of popular season 4 character Eddie Munson, including how he first met Lucas, Dustin and Mike.

The four-issue miniseries will be co-written by Jody Houser, who co-wrote the previous Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons miniseries, and Eric Campbell, writer of Dungeons & Dragons Worlds & Realms. Diego Galindo also returns to illustrate it, joined by colorist Diana Sousa and letterer Nate Piekos. While the previous series was co-published by IDW, the Dungeons & Dragons license is now with Dark Horse Comics, which makes this their first official D&D comic.

“As soon as I saw Stranger Things season 4, I knew the story of Eddie Munson and the Hellfire Club would be a perfect sequel to our Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons miniseries,” Houser said. “Both Eric and I are very familiar with how D&D forges friendships and storytellers, and it’s been wonderful exploring Hawkins through that lens.”

NYCC | Doctor Doom takes over the world in ‘The Rise of Emperor Doom’ by Ryan North and R.B. Silva

It’s Doom’s world now; we’re all just living in it.

Marvel’s big summer event series Blood Hunt ended with Doctor Doom convincing Doctor Strange to pass on the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to him in order to save the world from eternal darkness and the vampire threat — which Strange did reluctantly and Doom, in turn, fulfilled his part with relative ease.

But Doom elected to turn his temporary assignment into a full-time job before heading back to Latveria to … well, do whatever Doom does. Until next February, when Doom will star in The Rise of Emperor Doom, an “anchor series” for a bigger event Marvel is calling One World Under Doom. The five-issue miniseries is by Ryan North, current writer of the Fantastic Four, and artist R.B. Silva.

“One World Under Doom sees Doctor Doom coming out of [Latveria], and overnight, taking over the world,” North said. “Every country is a province of a united Latveria, and everyone answers to Doom, and he is going to make some changes… He gets to show the world that he’s the greatest at what he does, and that might not be great for people not named Victor Von Doom.”

NYCC | James Tynion IV, Steve Foxe + Piotr Kowalski explore the legend of the Jersey Devil at Dark Horse

Tynion’s ‘True Weird’ stories continue in a new miniseries next year.

James Tynion IV has shown his affection for “True Weird” stories — stories of UFOs, cryptids and other stories about people’s real-world encounters with the unexplained — in the past, most recently on his Substack newsletter and through titles like Blue Book. These stories will continue on at Dark Horse, starting with Let This One Be A Devil next February.

Tynion is teaming up with co-writer Steve Foxe, artist Piotr Kowalski, colorist Brad Simpson and letterer Tom Napolitano on the four-issue miniseries. It’ll also feature a “True Weird” back-up story by Rachel Deering, with art by Jesse Lonergan and lettering by Aditya Bidikar.

“Starting with Blue Book, the beating heart of the Tiny Onion publishing program with Dark Horse has been the exploration of what I call ‘True Weird’ stories–comics based on the real stories of encounters with the strange and impossible,” said Tynion. “Let This One Be a Devil is the first in a whole new set of titles in our True Weird library at Dark Horse, in which we’ll tell the stories inspired by the accounts that brought figures like the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, and The Loch Ness Monster into the public consciousness. This is just the beginning.”

NYCC | ‘Ultimate Wolverine’ is the Maker’s ultimate weapon in a new series coming next year

Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio’s ‘Ultimate Wolverine’ will launch in January 2025

Marvel’s Ultimate Universe is getting a new but familiar addition this January, as today at the New York Comic Con the publisher announced Ultimate Wolverine by the team of Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio.

Like many of the inhabitants of the Ultimate Universe, Wolverine’s a bit different in this universe than he is in the 616. Sporting the codename “The Winter Soldier,” this Wolverine isn’t in control of himself — he’s an agent of three members of the Maker’s council, Magik, Colossus and Omega Red. To ensure they maintain control of a world that now has superheroes running around and causing a raucous, they unleash him to do all those things that he’s best at.

“When Wil Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to take on this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately had an idea of what to do with it,” said Condon. “I’m bringing my essence of storytelling from That Texas Blood to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back at what came before and bringing us something new.”

NYCC | Jason Aaron + Mahmud Asrar reunite for ‘Bug Wars’ at Image Comics

The epic adventure begins in a backyard in Alabama.

Writer Jason Aaron is re-teaming with Mahmud Asrar, who he worked with on Conan the Barbarian, for a new creator-owned six-issue series called Bug Wars. And yes, their new Image Comics series is literally about a kid fighting bugs in his backyard — bugs that cast spells, swings swords and generally have it out for the kid’s family.

“When I was a kid, our backyard was a wondrous place, where I spent hours imagining epic adventures, action figures scattered all through the grass. In a lot of ways, I still feel like that kid, running around the yard, making up stories. Only the stories have gotten a bit darker over the years,” said Aaron. “For Slade Slaymaker, the backyard of his home in Alabama turns out to be a place of terror and brutality, where sects of tiny sword-wielding Mytes and their armies of flesh-eating beetles and acid-spraying ants have declared war on his family. Think Honey, I Shrunk the Kids meets Game of Thrones.”

Rejoining the two of them is colorist Matthew Wilson, who also worked on Conan. Letterer Becca Carey and editor Heather Antos round out the team.

NYCC | Mike Mignola + team reunite for more ‘Frankenstein: New World’

Christopher Golden, Thomas Sniegoski, Peter Bergting, Michelle Madsen and Clem Robins return for ‘Frankenstein: New World – The Sea of Forever.’

After the world ended, Frankenstein’s story was just beginning. The legendary monster’s future adventures started in 2022’s Frankenstein: New World, and now he’s back for its sequel, subtitled The Sea of Forever.

Mignola will once again be joined by writers Christopher Golden and Thomas Sniegoski for the project, as well as artist Peter Bergting, colorist Michelle Madsen and letterer Clem Robins.

“When Chris, Mike, Peter and I finished up Frankenstein: New World, we knew that we had lots of story still to tell . . . and thankfully, Dark Horse agreed,” Sniegoski said. “With Frankenstein: New World–The Sea of Forever, we’ve gotten the opportunity to delve even deeper into this evolving, post apocalyptic world full of beauty, wonder and a gradually growing evil on the verge of infecting this new, pristine world. I can’t wait for folks to see this next chapter in the Frankenstein: New World saga!”

The ever lovin’ Hulkette debuts in ‘Spider-Boy’ #13

Another New Champion makes her debut next month.

Before the New Champions arrives next year, another of its members will make her in-comic debut. Hulkette, who first appeared on a variant cover for Sensational She-Hulk #1, will face off with Spider-Boy and Daredevil in Spider-Boy #13.

Created by artist Mirka Andolfo, Hulkette’s story will be told by Dan Slott and Paco Medina across several issues of Spider-Boy, including her origin.

“We’ll learn more about Hulkette and her powers as she faces off against Spider-Boy and Daredevil,” said Slott. “There’s a big surprise in store for Marvel fans when we finally drop the secret of her origins… but for now, if you want to see this pint-sized powerhouse throw her first punches on the page, this is the issue where her journey begins.”

NYCC | Charles Soule + Ryan Browne bring ‘The Lucky Devils’ to Image Comics

The nine-issue miniseries begins in January.

Charles Soule and Ryan Browne are at it again — the team behind Curse Words and Eight Billion Genies are bringing the devils on our shoulders to life in The Lucky Devils, a nine-issue miniseries that kicks off in January.

“After the incredible success of Eight Billion Genies, Ryan Browne and I knew our next project together had to be something truly special,” said Soule. “The Lucky Devils feels like exactly that—a spiritual successor to Genies in that it, too, tells a self-contained, tightly-plotted story about the supernatural unexpectedly intersecting with the lives of a few ordinary, unsuspecting people. That said, it’s also very much its own beast. Patton Oswalt + Garth Graham join Tim Seeley for the next ‘Money Shot’ series

‘Money Shot: Big Bang’ will kick off with a zero issue that recaps all the sexual and relationship shenanigans of the previous two series.

If you thought Vault’s Money Shot had shot its load, worry not — the alien porn/relationship comic by writer Tim Seeley will rise again next year, and Seeley’s bringing some new friends along for the ride.

Comedian Patton Oswalt, who recently worked with Seeley on the Minor Threats series The Alternates, will co-write Money Shot: Big Bang, with webcomics artist Garth Graham providing art. They’re joined by Kurt Michael Russell on colors, Crank! on letters and designer Tim Daniel.

If you’ve never read Money Shot — or just need a recap of the previous two series — Big Bang will kick off with a zero issue that explains the story thus far.

“Money Shot has always been about finding the right partners,” said Seeley. “Lots of partners. Friends. Strangers. Aliens with a dozen or so sex organs. And even beloved comedians and acclaimed webcomics artists! So, with Big Bang, I’m positively throbbing to work with my friend and collaborator Patton Oswalt, and burning hot new (to print comics) talent, Garth Graham!”

Marvel will release a series of team-up one-shots by J. Michael Straczynski

The prolific writer will team with Will Robson, Bernard Chang and more on team-ups featuring Spider-Man, Captain America, Galactus and Doctor Doom, among others.

Captain America writer  J. Michael Straczynski will write an eclectic series of one-shots for Marvel next year, each featuring a different art team and a different set of characters “in unexpected team-ups or action-packed showdowns.”

Straczynski will work with artists Will Robson, Bernard Chang, Elena Casagrande, Germán Peralta, Juan Ferreyra and Phil Noto on the one-shots, which feature oddball team-ups like Doctor Doom and Rocket Raccoon, as well as battles between the likes of Ghost Rider and Galactus.

“I like to go where the fun is, and the idea of putting together Marvel characters who had either never been paired before, or only minimally, seemed like it would be a ton of fun, and it was even more of a blast than I anticipated,” Straczynski said.

Michel Fiffe’s ‘Death of Copra’ will bring the story to a ‘high octane’ end

The long-running indie comics sensation concludes with a final four-issue miniseries that begins in January.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Michel Fiffe’s excellent self-published series Copra will meet its final fate in Death of Copra, a four-issue miniseries that kicks off In January.

“The whole thing is bittersweet, which is perfect in a way,” said Fiffe. “The story of Copra is one of duality: brutal but tender, bombast as defined by human nuance, crafted with a love of comics history while guided by an eye towards the future.”

The final miniseries will be published by Image Comics, rather than self-published by Fiffe. Image published the series for about six issues just prior to the pandemic, but Fiffe returned to self-publishing it for issues #38-45. Image continued to publish collections of the material.

Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen + more help celebrate 10 years of Star Wars comics at Marvel with ‘A New Legacy’

The one-shot will put a spotlight on the Star Wars characters who debuted in comic books.

Next year will mark 10 years since Marvel reclaimed the license to create Star Wars comics (and more than 12 years since Disney bought Lucasfilm, in case you were wondering) and to celebrate Marvel will release a one-shot that will spotlight many of the creators and characters who have been part of this new era.

January’s Star Wars: A New Legacy will include stories by Kieron Gillen, Jason Aaron and Charles Soule, three writers who have contributed to the line since its relaunch, along with recent Star Wars artists Ramon Rosanas, Leonard Kirk and Salva Espin. Their stories will feature characters who made their debut in the comics, including Doctor Aphra, Sana Starros, Scar Squadron, Krrsantan the Wookiee bounty hunter and more.

“This is the monumental moment we’ve been waiting for: celebrating a decade of the re-union of Marvel Comics and Star Wars!” editor Mark Paniccia said. “We’ve got a great package here with some of the most influential Star Wars comic writers in recent history along with amazing art. It is so cool to spotlight as many of the Marvel-created characters as we could. Longtime and new fans alike will get a kick in the thrusters with this!”
