DC will publish YA takes on Wonder Woman, Blue Beetle this year

DC will collect ‘Young Diana’ by Jordie Bellaire and Paulina Ganucheau, and publish a Blue Beetle OGN by Julio Anta and Jacoby Salcedo.

DC has announced two projects coming later this year aimed at the young adult market, which include a Wonder Woman collection and a new Blue Beetle graphic novel.

Up first is Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana, written by Jordie Bellaire and drawn by Paulina Ganucheau. These stories originally ran as a back-up in the regular Wonder Woman title starting 2021, and featured a look at Diana’s early life on Themyscira.

Villains search for normal lives in ‘Deadweights’ by Tyrone Finch + Sebastián Píriz

The miniseries kicks off in April.

What happens when super villains are fired for being bad at their jobs and try to integrate back into society? They become Deadweights, and the subjects of a new miniseries by Tyrone Finch and Sebastián Píriz.

The six-issue miniseries from Ahoy Comics will follow Cannonbulk and Bounder, two evil mutants trying to go straight.

“At its core, Deadweights is about friendship,” Finch said. “It’s the story of two people who have been relentlessly beaten, battered, tossed off of bridges and forced to live in hideouts with no electricity or plumbing. But somehow, the two of them have never given up on each other or their dreams. When you look past their costumes, battles and vows to subjugate the human race; they’re just a couple of guys looking to find a place for themselves in this crazy, mixed-up world.”

‘Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!’ rises from Skybound

Dan Watters, Ram V, Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart bring the creature back from the depths this spring.

On the heels of James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ adaptation of Dracula, Skybound and Universal have announced a second miniseries starring one of the Universal Monsters — Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!

The miniseries will continue the story from the original movie while introducing some new characters:  journalist Kate Marsden, who is following the trail of serial killer Darwin Collier in the Amazon. Dan Watters and Ram V will team up to write the miniseries, which will feature artwork by Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart.

“We’re so thrilled to announce our second book in the Universal Monsters line.” Said Alex Antone, editorial director at Skybound. “Dan Watters and Ram V are two of the most exciting writers in comics, and to be able to turn them loose with longtime Skybound creators Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart has been an absolute treat. And while James and Martin’s Dracula was an adaptation of the original film, Creature is a brand-new story featuring beloved Gill-Man. Each book in the Universal Monsters line will feel different from the last, with each creative team bringing their own unique flavor and passion to these iconic horror characters. I can’t wait to share what else we have planned!”

DC’s solicitations for April 2024 arrived this past week — you can find them on The Beat or on Newsarama — and I thought I’d pull out some of the highlights. There aren’t many new first issues, but there is a big Superman-themed crossover event launching, several annuals, some graphic novels and listings for three of their four Free Comic Book Day titles for this year.

Nominees announced for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

Nominees this year include ‘Poison Ivy,’ ‘Roaming,’ ‘Heartstopper’ and more.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for the 35th annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

The awards feature two categories dedicated to comics — one for comics books and one for graphic novels. Last year Poison Ivy and the anthology Young Men in Love won in those categories, with Poison Ivy receiving another nomination this year. Dark Horse Comics received five nominations this year across the two categories, followed by DC with four and Marvel with three.

TMNT: Sophie Campbell’s epic run ends with #150 as Jason Aaron preps a relaunch

IDW and Paramount prepare to celebrate 40 years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

IDW has revealed several details about their plans for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2024, which will “shell-ebrate” their 40th anniversary this year.

First, Sophia Campell’s four-year run crafting stories featuring the turtles will come to an end with issue #150.

“I still can’t quite believe I’ve gotten to work on this much TMNT. I thought for sure I’d get the boot in the first year, but nope – here I am, four years later, still here against all odds,” Campbell said. “It’s really been amazing, truly a dream job. I wonder what my 10-year-old self would think if she knew what she’d go on to eventually do. The fact that this chapter is ending and I’m leaving the series is bittersweet, I’ll miss it for sure but it’s time to move on and let somebody else have a shot at the Turtles, and I’ll be back for more before you know it, whatever form that might take. As two great men once said, ‘Change is constant’ and ‘Life at best is bittersweet.’”

Thompson + Izzo commit crimes in remote places in ‘Blow Away’

The neo-noir thriller will arrive from BOOM! Studios in April.

Writer Zac Thompson and artist Nicola Izzo will channel their inner Hitchcock on Blow Away, a crime thriller kicking off at BOOM! this spring.

The story’s about a wildlife videographer who, while on a remote video shoot, may have witnessed and filmed a murder.

“Ever since I first watched Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, I’ve dreamt of telling a paranoid thriller story. Blow Away is that dream made manifest through an incredible collaboration with Nicola,” said Thompson, whose known for his work on Ka-Zar: Lord of the Savage Land, The Marvelous X-Men and The Dregs. “We’ve crafted a neo-noir mystery about obsession and the slippery and subjective nature of the truth. Really, it’s a big love letter to Brian De Palma and Alfred Hitchcock where suspense is the driving force on every page.”

Michael Avon Oeming reveals the secret history of England in ‘William of Newbury’

The new miniseries kicks off in May.

Powers and Blue Book co-creator Michael Avon Oeming is flying solo on a new miniseries that’s “loosely based on real events in 12th century England.” “Loosely” because, presumably, the actual events didn’t involve a raccoon monk who fought supernatural threats.

William of Newbury, thankfully, does include a cuddly raccoon monk who fights supernatural threats.

“William of Newbury wrote the first history of England,” said Oeming. “Which included accounts of the undead rising from graves and demons flying in the air. I love weird history and William personified it. Come and have some spooky fun with me; Newbury is a safe place to be scared!”

Remender + Bengal present the explosive ‘Napalm Lullaby’ in March

Rick Remender returns to superheroes for the first time in a decade.

Death or Glory creators Rick Remender and Bengal will re-team this year for a high-octane superhero story, Napalm Lullaby. The comic will be released through Remender’s Giant Generator imprint at Image Comics.

“Napalm Lullaby and The Holy Roller are my first forays into superheroes since I left Marvel a decade ago,” said Remender. “At one point in time, I promised myself never to return to this genre—but when this idea [for Napalm Lullaby] hit, it was too exciting not to make it real. Fortunately, my longtime collaborator and friend Bengal agreed, and we set out to make an apocalyptic superhero story unlike anything you’ve seen or read. We’ve been developing this story for years and it couldn’t have more love dumped into it. Ben has made sure every single page is a work of art.”

‘Verse’ returns to the web before the release of a third print collection

The conclusion to Sam Beck’s epic fantasy will arrive in print this summer.

Verse, the long-running webcomic by Sam Beck that went offline when Vault Comics began collecting it in print, has returned to the web as Beck and Vault prepare to release the third and final volume, Verse: The Song.

“I started Verse off as a webcomic, so you can’t imagine how thrilled I am that it’s finally returning to the web,” Beck said. “It’s always been important to me to bring it back to its original form, and I hope it gets everyone excited for the final book in the series.”

Verse is set on a world where magic is feared–only evil monsters known as Vell use it. But when the main character, Fife, discovers a girl named Neitya with mysterious powers, they team up on an adventure that will change everything.
