‘Four-Color Heroes,’ ‘Doctor Aphra’ win at the GLAAD Media Awards

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation recognized comics from Marvel and Fanbase Press in their 35th annual Media Awards.

Four-Color Heroes and Doctor Aphra took home awards at the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

GLAAD recognizes the comic arts in two categories — “Outstanding Comic Book” and “Outstanding Original Graphic Novel/Anthology.” The awards were given out Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, across categories that recognized film, television, video games and more. Other winners included the TV show Yellowjackets and the video game Baldur’s Gate 3.

Nominees announced for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

Nominees this year include ‘Poison Ivy,’ ‘Roaming,’ ‘Heartstopper’ and more.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for the 35th annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

The awards feature two categories dedicated to comics — one for comics books and one for graphic novels. Last year Poison Ivy and the anthology Young Men in Love won in those categories, with Poison Ivy receiving another nomination this year. Dark Horse Comics received five nominations this year across the two categories, followed by DC with four and Marvel with three.

‘Young Men in Love,’ ‘Poison Ivy’ win GLAAD awards

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation recognized comics from DC and A Wave Blue World in their 34th annual Media Awards.

Poison Ivy and Young Men in Love were honored by The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, as winners in their 34th annual Media Awards.

Poison Ivy by G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara, Atagun Ilhan, Brian Level, Stefano Gaudiano, Jay Leisten, Arif Prianto, Ivan Plascencia and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, took home the award for Outstanding Comic Book. The DC title was up against nine other comic series in the category.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for their 34th annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

Like last year, the awards feature two categories — one for comics books and one for graphic novels. DC led the pack with six nominees across the two categories, followed by Marvel with four, and Image and Graphix with two each. Last year Crush & Lobo from DC Comics and Cheer Up! Love and Pompoms from Oni Press took home the awards.

Nominees announced for the 33rd GLAAD Media Awards

Nominees include ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Wynd,’ ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El,’ ‘The Secret to Superhuman Strength’ and more.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for their 33rd annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

This year GLAAD doubled their recognition of the comic industry by expanding to two categories — one for comics books and one for graphic novels. DC led the pack with seven nominees across the two categories, followed by Marvel and Dark Horse with three each.

Doctor Aphra, the Marvel comic featuring the character from the Star Wars universe, won the comic book award two years ago and is nominated again this year. Last year Marvel’s Empyre event won the award. The graphic novel category is very competitive in its first year, featuring projects by Molly Ostertag, Alison Bechdel, Mariko Tamaki and more.

‘Empyre’ wins the 2021 GLAAD award for ‘Outstanding Comic Book’

Marvel’s summer event series, which ended with Wiccan and Hulkling tying the knot, has been recognized by GLAAD.

The GLAAD Awards have recognized several comics from Marvel’s Empyre event for “Outstanding Comic Book” during their 2021 awards.

The recognition was announced on Twitter, where writers Al Ewing, Dan Slott and Anthony Oliveira were all featured in the acceptance video:

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for their 32nd annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.

10 comics and graphic novels have been nominated in the “Outstanding Comic Book” category, including four from DC Comics, three from Marvel, two from BOOM! Studios and one from Random House Graphic. Doctor Aphra, the Marvel comic featuring the character from the Star Wars universe, won the award last year.

‘Doctor Aphra’ wins a GLAAD Media Award

The Star Wars comic featuring an original character created for the comics also featured a same-sex relationship.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra has won a 2020 GLAAD Media Award, in the “Outstanding Comic Book” category. The awards were announced by GLAAD on Twitter.

The comic features the adventures of Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra, a character created specifically for comics. She is a lesbian, having a same-sex relationship with Magna Tolvan, a member of the Imperial army when they first meet.

Aphra was created by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca, but the comics that were nominated were created by a large cast of creators who GLAAD recognized on Twitter: Simon Spurrier, Emilio Laiso, Andrea Broccardo, Wilton Santos, Caspar Wijngaard, Marc Deering, Don Ho, Walden Wong, Chris Bolson, Scott Hanna, Elsa Charretier, Rachelle Rosenberg, Chris O’Halloran, Stephane Paitreau, Lee Loughridge, Edgar Delgado, Jim Campbell, Joe Caramagna.

2019 nominees in the comic book category include ‘Runaways,’ ‘Lumberjanes,’ ‘Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me’ and more.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for their 2019 Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.

This year Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, First Second and Marvel have all received two nominations, while DC Comics and comiXology Originals each received one. Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles won the award in this category last year.

‘Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles’ wins a GLAAD Media Award

The comic by Mark Russell and Mike Feehan was recognized in a ceremony this week in Los Angeles.

The DC Comics revival of several classic Hanna Barbera cartoons as comics has brought some interesting results — and now it’s brought them a GLAAD Media Award.

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles took home the award last night in the Outstanding Comic Book category. The comic re-imagined the pink cougar as a gay playwright in the 1950s dealing with McCarthyism and the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

The comic was created by writer Mark Russell, penciller Mike Feehan, inker Mark Morales, colorist Paul Mounts and editors Marie Javins, Diego Lopez and Brian Cunningham.

‘The Woods,’ ‘Batwoman,’ ‘America’ among 2018 GLAAD Award nominees

DC Comics, Marvel, BOOM! Studios and Black Mask Studios all represented in the 10 nominees in the comic book category.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, have announced the nominees for their 2018 Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives.

BOOM! Studios received four nominations, including one for last year’s winner, The Woods. They were followed by Marvel with three, DC Comics with two and Black Mask Studios with one. James Tynion IV, writer of The Woods, was involved with three of the books that received nominations.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles on April 12 at The Beverly Hilton, and in New York on May 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown.
