This is a huge week for comics, as the summer comics season kicks off and Free Comic Book Day follows on Saturday. Marvel’s big crossover event, Blood Hunt, begins with two versions of its first issues (not to mention a FCBD issue in Saturday), while we also have a new Space Ghost title, a House of Brainiac special, several DC annuals, new stuff from Garth Ennis and Brian Azzarello, a Cat in the Hat graphic novel and much more.

I’ve pulled out some of the highlights below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

Jason Loo + Sergio Dávila’s ‘Werewolf by Night’ spins out of ‘Blood Hunt’

The ‘Red Band’ title will be aimed at mature audiences.

Jack Russell will play his part in this summer’s Blood Hunt event, but that’s only the beginning for the character.

Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt writer Jason Loo will team with Sergio Dávila on a new Werewolf by Night ongoing series, which Marvel says will be in the same “Red Band” format they’re using for the more mature version of Blood Hunt — aka the one with the blood’n’guts that’ll come bagged with a warning. Each issue will be “labeled with a Parental Advisory and polybagged to keep those weak of heart from experiencing its intensity,” so, y’know, Little Timmy, stay away. This IS your daddy’s comic.

“Our team is delivering a very metal, monster comic and we’re not holding back,” Loo said. “I’m both shocked and impressed at myself for conjuring up these gruesome scenes from the dark recesses of my mind, then seeing them come to life with every gory detail thanks to penciler Sergio Dávila and inker JP Mayer, as our editors keep giving us the thumbs up of approval. This is literally our smash room in a Red Band comic.”

Marvel has revealed the cover and more details on the highly anticipated new X-Men title by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, which is part of the bigger X-Men: From the Ashes line that follows the end of the current Krakoa era.

The new title will feature Cyclops leading a team that handle “explosive mutant-specific issues without restrain,” with the first threat being “an existential new enemy that rises out of the remains of Orchis.”

Both MacKay and Stegman are happy to be here.

“Taking on the X-Men is always a daunting prospect, but I’m extremely psyched to take this team of mutants back into the world with Ryan,” MacKay said.

Slugfest | Black Widow gets ‘Venomous’ in a new one-shot

Plus news and announcements on Hellverine, Misty, Nick Cagnetti, Paul Pope, Blood Hunt, Briar, Joy Operations and more!

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you that we haven’t otherwise covered. Hit the links for more information.

If you’ve been reading Venom of late, you know that the Black Widow — who already has a cool spider name — has gone and gotten herself a symbiote. This summer, writer Erica Schultz and artist Luciano Vecchio will “unleash Natasha Romanoff’s full potential as a symbiote warrior” in a new one-shot.

Black Widow: Venomous will not only show the super-spy figuring out how to work with her new partner, but will also set the stage for the upcoming Venom War event.

“Who doesn’t want to write Natasha Romanoff? And with a badass symbiote, it didn’t take much to convince me,” Schultz said. “Luciano Vecchio’s art is so amazing. It’s been so fun to delve into Nat’s spy craft techniques, and you just may learn something new about her.”

Hulk, Werewolf by Night make the leap into ‘Blood Hunt’

Marvel reveals the final two comics in their Blood Hunt crossover event.

It looks like we’ve finally made it to the end of the list of tie-ins for Marvel’s Blood Hunt event, the big vampire apocalypse crossover that’s coming this summer. I mean, maybe we have — there’s always a chance they could add in an epilogue or whatever. But these final two one-shots at least fill in the scorecard they shared.

The final two one-shots will feature the Hulk and Werewolf by Night, which both feature regular old humans who can transform into something more monstrous.

Jason Loo and Adam Gorham will show us what Jake Gomez, the new Werewolf by Night, is up to during the event in Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt. While started as an artist, working on the Eisner-winning Afterlift with Chip Zdarsky, he’s proven to be an accomplished writer on several Marvel projects.

Marvel announces ‘Blood Hunt’ one-shots for Magik, Psylocke, Jubilee + Wolverine

The X-Men will enter the vampire apocalypse, just not all together.

Four of Marvel’s mutants are getting one-shot tie-ins to this summer’s big Blood Hunt crossover event, including Psylocke, Magik, Jubilee and Wolverine — no, not him, the other Wolverine, Laura Kinney.

According to Marvel.com, the reason for the solo one-shots is story driven –“This bloodbath of terror couldn’t come at a more dire time for mutantkind. Currently scattered after the fall of Krakoa, the X-Men won’t be able to strike from a united front.”

So instead, four of them will go solo — one who is a former vampire, and three who are really good at stabbing things. But all of this is happening after Fall of the House of X and, it sounds like, before the launch of the Tom Brevoort-edited X-Men: From the Ashes, which we don’t really know anything about except that it’ll be previewed on Free Comic Book Day.

Anyway, here’s a rundown of the four one-shots, which leaves us with two as-yet-unrevealed one-shot tie-ins that’ll be announced tomorrow.

‘Blood Hunt’ tie-ins bring a new team of Avengers, vampire Doctor Strange and more

The vampire apocalypse will rage through many Marvel titles this summer.

Marvel’s Blood Hunt event continues to spread in scope; in addition to the eight tie-in miniseries they announced last week, they’ve also announced the seven regular titles that will take part in Marvel’s big vampire apocalypse.

Given that the main Blood Hunt book is written by Jed MacKay, it’s not surprising to see Doctor Strange, Avengers and Vengeance of the Moon Knight will tie into the bigger story. There’s also three Spider-Family titles on the list, which is rounded out by the Fantastic Four.

Here are a few things you can expect from the tie-ins:

  • With the current Avengers roster involved in the main Blood Hunt title, the Avengers ongoing will instead focus on a ragtag team put together by the guy who invented ragtag teams of Avengers, Steve Rogers. This 2024 version of Cap’s kooky quartet is actually a quintet, as it’ll feature Quicksilver, Hawkeye, Hercules and Hazmat.
  • Blade will show up in a number of places during the crossover, including in Miles Morales: Spider-Man.
  • The Venom issues will see the resurrection of a former host of the symbiote Venom — Lee Price, who became Venom in 2016 but was killed off in 2019 after Eddie Brock took the suit back.
  • Black Panther isn’t the only hero to become a vampire, as Doctor Strange will also be infected.
  • But don’t worry, T’Challa and Stephen — Mr. Fantastic is on the case, as he searches for a cure for vampirism in Fantastic Four.

Six of the ongoing series tie-ins will run for multiple issues, with the only exception being Amazing Spider-Man, which just gets a single issue before spinning its story off into the Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt miniseries. You can find covers for the May issues, along with descriptions and creative teams, below.

Tom Waltz makes his Marvel debut on ‘Wolverine: Blood Hunt’

The ‘Last Ronin’ writer joins artist Juan José Ryp on a tie-in miniseries for this summer’s ‘Blood Hunt’ event.

Wolverine’s recent troubles with the vampire nation will only get worse, as Tom Waltz and Juan José Ryp send him head first into Marvel’s Blood Hunt event this summer.

Wolverine: Blood Hunt will “conclude Logan’s private war against the vampire nation,” which has been a running plot thread in Benjamin Percy’s work on the ongoing Wolverine title.

The miniseries marks the Marvel debut for Waltz, the co-writer of the white-hot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.

“I’ve spent much of my career writing about iconic mutants, so having my Marvel debut be a chance to put ‘the best there is’ through a vampiric bloodstorm in Wolverine: Blood Hunt is an absolute thrill of a lifetime,” Waltz said. “It’s made even better by getting to do it alongside the amazingly talented Juan José Ryp, top-notch colorist GURU-eFX, and stellar editors Mark Basso and Drew Baumgartner! Blood, bullets, claws, and fangs—nothing gets held back in our four-issue gauntlet of gore!”

Spidey hunts for Morbius in ‘Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt’

Spider-Man and his fanged frenemy star in a ‘Blood Hunt’ tie-in series by Justina Ireland and Marcelo Ferreira.

Morbius the Living Vampire, Spider-Man’s sometimes enemy, sometimes ally, may be the only hope Marvel’s heroes have in saving the world from the vampiric apocalypse in Blood Hunt.

We ‘ll find out for sure in Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt, one of eight tie-in miniseries that will arrive in May. Justina Ireland and Marcelo Ferreira will send Spider-Man, Misty Knight and the Lizard on a quest to find Morbius.

“Getting to write Morbius, The Living Vampire, has been a lot of fun,” Ireland said. “He’s always been a delightful foil to Spider-Man and other heroes of the Marvel Universe, and I hope I can capture the determination to change one’s fate that I’ve always loved about the character. Well, that and the brooding.”

Strange Academy enters the ‘Blood Hunt’ in May

School’s back in session, as Daniel José Older and Luigi Zagaria send the Strange Academy students on a scavenger hunt for the Darkhold.

The students from Strange Academy will return in May courtesy of writer Daniel José Older and artist Luigi Zagaria, as they engage with the bloodthirsty undead in this summer’s Blood Hunt.

“As a huge fan of the incredible work of Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos, I was beyond honored to be able to jump into the world of Strange Academy,” Older said. “And what better way to do it than in this epic crossover event? Truly a comic writer’s dream come true. I’ve spent the past couple weeks walking around my home city of New Orleans, dreaming up thrilling adventures for these kids, and I can’t wait to watch them come to life in Luigi Zagaria’s brilliant art.”

The Midnight Sons reunite to battle the vampire horde during ‘Blood Hunt’

Blade, two Ghost Riders and more will come together in a new miniseries by Bryan Hill and Germán Peralta.

The Midnight Sons will rise once more as a part of Marvel’s vampire-infused summer crossover series, Blood Hunt.

Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt by writer Bryan Hill and artist Germán Peralta will bring together Blade, Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch and more to not only battle vampires, but also “tragically spill the blood of one of their own.”

“FINALLY, the world realizes I’m a ‘horror guy’ and I’m grateful,” Hill said. “Working with Blade has been a blast, and what I’m doing with Midnight Sons is maybe even more ferocious than that. This event is really exciting, the hype is real, and what I have planned for this will hopefully satisfy fans of action… and terror.”

Dracula and Blade’s daughter team-up to save humanity in ‘Dracula: Blood Hunt’

Danny Lore and Vincenzo Carratù bring the vampire lord and Bloodline into the bigger ‘Blood Hunt’ fray this summer.

You can’t have a vampire crossover without Dracula, and today Marvel announced that everyone’s favorite vampire lord will appear in a three-issue miniseries that’ll accompany this summer’s Blood Hunt event.

Dracula: Blood Hunt by Danny Lore and Vincenzo Carratù will feature Marvel’s version of Dracula teaming up with an unlikely ally, Blade’s daughter Bloodline.

“One of the most interesting things about Dracula, for me, is that he doesn’t run on mortal time, and because of that, his reasoning tends toward shadowy and full of schemes,” Lore said. “Right now, his goal is to keep Brielle safe—but what does it mean to protect the kid of the No. 1 thorn in your side? And why?”
