Tom Sniegoski + Craig Rousseau will bring ‘The Herculoids’ back to comics next year

A new series based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon will debut from Dynamite in February.

During the New York Comic Con this past weekend, Dynamite revealed more details on their upcoming Herculoids series, which was first mentioned in San Diego this summer. Tom Sniegoski and Craig Rousseau will bring Zandor, Tara, Igoo and the rest of the crew from the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon series to comics.

“I can honestly say that getting the chance to write The Herculoids series for Dynamite is one of the highlights of my comics career,” Sniegoski said. “Having the opportunity to get into the minds of these characters has been a real challenge, but also incredibly fun. Who wouldn’t want to write a giant rock ape?! And equally exciting is seeing what artist Craig Rousseau is doing with my scripts. I think there are going to be some very pleased Herculoids fans out there when they see his art.”

If you’re not familiar with the cartoon, the Herculoids ran for 18 episodes in the late 1960s, with new episodes being produced in the early 1980s after its reruns gained a fan following. Set on the planet Amzot, the series blended science fiction and fantasy elements as Zandor, his wife Tara and their son Dorno led a team of alien creatures against an endless supply of villains, mad scientists, mutants, giant ants and more. Luckily Zandor and company had the help of the space dragon Zok, the rhinoceros-like Tundro, the rock ape Igoo and two shape-shifting balls of goo named Gloop and Gleep.

‘SilverHawks’ blast off into comics from Dynamite this January

As revealed at NYCC, Ed Brisson + George Kambadais will bring the 1980s cartoon to comics.

Dynamite Entertainment is following their highly successful launch of the ThunderCats earlier this year with the debut of a sister title — SilverHawks. Ed Brisson and George Kambadais will bring the space-soaring team, who also had their own cartoon back in the 1980s, into comics this January.

The title is part of Dynamite’s larger publishing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and will be set in the same universe as Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss’s ThunderCats, much like the animated series was. Dynamite said in the release that both titles would fall under “an umbrella to include all their spinoffs and potential connections moving forward,” which makes you wonder if they’ll catch a tiger by the tail next.

“When Dynamite launched ThunderCats I immediately began to pester Declan about the possibility of a SilverHawks book,” Brisson said. “When Nate reached out to me to write ThunderCats: Apex, my first question was, ‘When are you doing SilverHawks?!?’ I am very excited that this book is happening and that I’m privileged enough to be involved. I couldn’t ask for a better collaborator than George. So, strap in, because I’m about to pour all the love I have for the SilverHawks into this baby. I’m going to make you all love it too!”

SDCC Slugfest | Monday hangover edition

I’m not sure when or where this was announced this past weekend, but Paul Azaceta has shared on social media and through his newsletter that he’s working with writer Rick Remender and colorist Matheus Lopes on The Seasons, which will be released through Remender’s Giant Generator imprint at Image Comics.

“We really have something we’re both proud and excited to be putting together for you,” Azaceta said in his newsletter. “Something new from us. And something a bit different than the usual offerings on the stands. We worked hard on building this little world, creating these four sisters and what this book will be. But this is only the beginning!”

SDCC Slugfest | Star Wars, DuckTales, Thundarr + more

Today’s round-up of SDCC and related news includes items on a Junkyard Joe action figure, new titles coming from Dynamite, a big sale by Fantagraphics and more.

The first full day of the San Diego Comic-Con brought plenty of news and tiodbits from comic publishers, following a very busy couple of weeks for comic news. It’s hard to believe a week has already passed since DC’s All In announcement. But here we are! So let’s jump in.

We ‘ll start with some Star Wars comic news, which these days spans multiple publishers. Lucasfilm hosted a publishing panel today that covered several upcoming releases, including the Battle of Jakku comic coming from Marvel this fall. Today’s panel also brought the news that phase 3 of the Star Wars: The High Republic will come to a close next year, and Cavan Scott and Marika Cresta will help wrap it up at Marvel with a comic titled Fear of the Jedi:

SDCC | Dynamite announces the creative team for their ‘Terminator’ comic

Declan Shalvey and Luke Sparrow team up for tales of time-traveling mayhem.

Dynamite has announced a creative team and a release date for their Terminator comic. Writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke Sparrow will team up to tell stories that spin out of the plot for the original film but take things in a new direction, with “mostly done-in-one” stories involving killer robots and time travel.

“The approach of this series is new situations, new dilemmas in each issue. Mostly done-in-one stories, but as the series progresses there may be some recognizable faces…” Shalvey said. “We’re going for a more stripped-down, pulpy approach to the book. As innovative and groundbreaking as the first film was, it was also grounded in its environment, being noirish and moody as hell. An unstoppable force is coming to kill you — that’s the element of the franchise I want to lean into.”

Can’t Wait for Saturday | Free Comic Book Day brings Absolute Power, Jonny Quest + more

Check out a few of the cool + free comics you’ll find at your local retailer this Saturday.

The comic industry’s biggest holiday returns tomorrow as shops around the world bring you Free Comic Book Day, the annual event that yes, indeed, does offer you free comics.

The annual event started in 2002 based on an idea from retailer Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff in Concord, California. Since then, it’s become a cultural phenomenon, typically coming on the first Saturday in May, though sometimes in the past that wavered based on a new comic book movie’s release date. You can find a participating shop on the FCBD website, and see if any of your local shops are holding special events, sales or creator signings in conjunction with the event.

But of course, the focus is on the free comics. Many publishers use it as an opportunity to reshare a recent favorite or offer a prelude to an upcoming storyline or crossover. Still other will produce something wholly original or introduce a brand new title.

I’ve pulled out a few that look interesting to me below, and you can find the complete list of what could be available at your local shop on the FCBD site. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Not every retailer may have every title. Depending on their shop, they may elect to only have titles they think will excite their clientele.
  • Some retailers may limit the number of free comics you can take, while others may require a purchase.
  • Speaking of which, while titles are free to consumers, they are not free to retailers. So you may want to think about buying some other comics while you’re there regardless.
  • Some of the titles will also be available digitally, in case you can’t make it out on Saturday. So be sure to check your favorite digital comics site on Saturday as well.

‘Swords of the Swashbucklers’ sails again

Kickstarter for a new collection of Bill Mantlo and Jackson Guice’s classic Epic Comics series funds in under 24 hours.

Dynamite Entertainment is looking to bring Bill Mantlo and Jackson Guice’s Swords of the Swashbucklers back into print, and they’ve turned to Kickstarter to do it. And less than 24 hours into their campaign, they’re already 100 percent funded.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Swords of the Swashbucklers began life as a graphic novel from Marvel back in 1984, followed by a a series that ran for 12 issues under their Epic Comics banner. It’s about a teenage girl whose parents are kidnapped by an alien empire, so she joins up with a crew of space pirates to try and save them.

Gillen, Fuso enlisted for James Bond one-shot

Dynamite announces ‘James Bond: Service,’ a one-shot featuring an assassin’s plot to exterminate the “special relationship” between the U.S. and Great Britain.

Joining a list of writers that already includes Warren Ells, Andy Diggle, James Robinson and Benjamin Percy, Kieron Gillen has signed on to write Dynamite’s James Bond. He’ll team with artist Antonio Fuso to write James Bond: Service, a one-shot due out in May.

“The thing with the icons is that I’m not particularly interested in doing a one-size-fit-all story for them,” Gillen said in his email newsletter today. “You need to make them live, and that means finding something that really captures you. As such, this ends up digging into some of the interest in history and geopolitics which drives work like Uber, and merging it with the contemporary era. It is very much a Bond inspired by Brexit and realpolitik. If you can’t use a country’s icon to talk about the country, what’s the point, right?”

Ellis, Warren Ellis declassifies his upcoming run on ‘James Bond’

Although he’s written his share of secret agents in the past — John Stone keeps popping into my head as I write this — Warren Ellis will soon get his hands on the ultimate super-spy when his run on Dynamite’s James Bond comic begins later this month.

Titled “VARGR,” the first story arc has Bond returning to London after a mission of vengeance in Helsinki, to take up the workload of a fallen 00 Section agent. In his latest Orbital Operations email, sent out this past weekend, Ellis shared several details about his upcoming run on James Bond — which, as a commission via the Ian Fleming estate, will feature the secret agent from the books rather than the movies. Or, as Ellis put it, “This is meant to be Fleming’s Bond.”
