Marvel explores the legacy of the Jedi in two new comics next year

A pair of ongoing series will debut in February and March.

Marvel will explore the legacy of the Jedi Order in two new Star Wars comics coming early next year — Star Wars: Legacy of Vader and Star Wars: Jedi Knights.

Written by Charles Soule with artwork by Luke Ross, the ongoing Legacy of Vader is set after the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi and shows Kylo Ren’s quest to learn more about his grandfather, Darth Vader. The leader of the First Order will sets a course for everywhere from Mustafar to Tattooine to confront his own inner turmoil.

“When fans talk to me about my Star Wars work, two of my Marvel comic runs come up more than almost anything else: my 2017 run on Darth Vader with Giuseppe Camuncoli and my 2019 series The Rise of Kylo Ren,” Soule told StarWars.com. “I think both of those worked so well in part because they were set in parts of the Star Wars timeline full of unanswered questions about characters the audience really loves.”

Tom Sniegoski + Craig Rousseau will bring ‘The Herculoids’ back to comics next year

A new series based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon will debut from Dynamite in February.

During the New York Comic Con this past weekend, Dynamite revealed more details on their upcoming Herculoids series, which was first mentioned in San Diego this summer. Tom Sniegoski and Craig Rousseau will bring Zandor, Tara, Igoo and the rest of the crew from the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon series to comics.

“I can honestly say that getting the chance to write The Herculoids series for Dynamite is one of the highlights of my comics career,” Sniegoski said. “Having the opportunity to get into the minds of these characters has been a real challenge, but also incredibly fun. Who wouldn’t want to write a giant rock ape?! And equally exciting is seeing what artist Craig Rousseau is doing with my scripts. I think there are going to be some very pleased Herculoids fans out there when they see his art.”

If you’re not familiar with the cartoon, the Herculoids ran for 18 episodes in the late 1960s, with new episodes being produced in the early 1980s after its reruns gained a fan following. Set on the planet Amzot, the series blended science fiction and fantasy elements as Zandor, his wife Tara and their son Dorno led a team of alien creatures against an endless supply of villains, mad scientists, mutants, giant ants and more. Luckily Zandor and company had the help of the space dragon Zok, the rhinoceros-like Tundro, the rock ape Igoo and two shape-shifting balls of goo named Gloop and Gleep.

‘Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature!’ bridges the gap between ‘Peacemaker’ seasons

Tim Seeley, Mitch Gerads, Rex Ogle, Matteo Lolli and James Gunn bring the MAX series to comics.

Warner Bros. MAX series Peacemaker will spill into comics next year with a miniseries meant to bridge the gap between seasons one and two of the hit show.

Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature! will include two Peacemaker stories — one featuring Vigilante by Tim Seeley and Mitch Gerads, and another with Eagly, Peacemaker’s pet Eagle, by Rex Ogle, Matteo Lolli and John Kalisz. Pat Brosseau will letter both stories, while James Gunn will serve as a story consultant for both tales.

“When [DC editor] Katie Kubert asked me to do a short for DC’s Strange Love Adventures, I was stoked to write a Peacemaker story,” Ogle said. “So getting to dive back in and play with this iconic antihero again (and in a miniseries this time!) is a total dream. Part of what makes him so great is that at his core, Peacemaker is a hopeless optimist. He wants the world to be a better place, not just for himself, but for others. He doesn’t always go about achieving peace in the right way, but he brings an incredible levity to the violence that is already ever-present in our world. And sometimes we need to laugh at the bad—so we don’t break down and cry.”

‘SilverHawks’ blast off into comics from Dynamite this January

As revealed at NYCC, Ed Brisson + George Kambadais will bring the 1980s cartoon to comics.

Dynamite Entertainment is following their highly successful launch of the ThunderCats earlier this year with the debut of a sister title — SilverHawks. Ed Brisson and George Kambadais will bring the space-soaring team, who also had their own cartoon back in the 1980s, into comics this January.

The title is part of Dynamite’s larger publishing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and will be set in the same universe as Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss’s ThunderCats, much like the animated series was. Dynamite said in the release that both titles would fall under “an umbrella to include all their spinoffs and potential connections moving forward,” which makes you wonder if they’ll catch a tiger by the tail next.

“When Dynamite launched ThunderCats I immediately began to pester Declan about the possibility of a SilverHawks book,” Brisson said. “When Nate reached out to me to write ThunderCats: Apex, my first question was, ‘When are you doing SilverHawks?!?’ I am very excited that this book is happening and that I’m privileged enough to be involved. I couldn’t ask for a better collaborator than George. So, strap in, because I’m about to pour all the love I have for the SilverHawks into this baby. I’m going to make you all love it too!”

Daredevil faces a ‘Cold Day in Hell’ courtesy of Charles Soule + Steve McNiven

The future looks bleak for Matt Murdock in a new miniseries launching next year.

Charles Soule and Steve McNiven, the team behind Marvel’s The Death of Wolverine, will reunite a decade later for Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell, a miniseries offering a dark future for the Man Without Fear.

Set in a future Marvel Universe on the brink of collapse, the series introduces a “grizzled, older version” of Matt Murdock — someone more akin to Old Man Logan, another character McNiven knows well.

“I know whatever idea I write is going to be executed masterfully by Steve, and that level of trust allows you to take a lot of risks,” Soule said. “It’s been a really interesting process because the way we made it is something I wouldn’t do with an artist that I didn’t have this level of collaboration and trust with. We’ve been working on this book for four years, and that time has been well spent.”

Sophie Campbell + Matt Frank will resurrect Mothra at IDW

The ‘Queen of the Monsters’ will star in a five-issue miniseries next year.

At the New York Comic Con this weekend, IDW announced a Godzilla-adjacent miniseries featuring Mothra, the giant moth-like kaiju who protects the Earth from other kaiju. Former Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Sophie Campbell is writing the series and providing variant covers, while Godzilla: Rulers of Earth artist Matt Frank will draw it.

“I have been a fan of Sophie and her work for years, and when the opportunity came up to finally collaborate with her on this new mini-series, I could barely contain my excitement!” Frank told Godzilla.com. “And what a perfect project! Sophie’s initial pitch drew me in to the massive potential of Mothra’s own dedicated comic, and it’s metamorphosed into a true collaboration. We’ve been coming up with so many cool ideas that our comic can barely contain them all.”

Jim Lee + Jeph Loeb will return to ‘Batman’ for ‘Hush 2’

Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez will wrap up their run on ‘Batman’ in February.

A classic Batman tale will get a sequel next year as Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee reunite for Hush 2, a sequel to their 2002-2203 story arc that introduced us to the villain Hush.

They’ll be joined on the six-issue storyline by their collaborators Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair and Richard Starkings, who return as inker, colorist and letterer, respectively.

Hush 2 will run in the regular Batman title beginning in March, and will last for six issues, Lee revealed during his Jim Lee & Friends panel at the New York Comic Con. A prelude to the story will appear in Justice League Unlimited #1, which comes out Nov. 27. Lee shared some preliminary artwork on his Instagram.

This also means that Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez’s run on the title will end in February, which Zdarsky said was his choice in his latest newsletter.

The Strange Academy students get a new headmaster in ‘Doom Academy’

The ‘One World Under Doom’ tie-in miniseries will begin in February.

Doctor Doom’s tenure as sorcerer supreme comes with some additional responsibilities — namely serving as headmaster of the former Strange Academy. The students of that institution — who helped Doom save the world from the vampire invasion in Blood Hunt — will find out what it’s like to have One World Under Doom as they relocate from New Orleans to Latveria to study at the Doom Academy.

Announced during this weekend’s New York Comic Con, the five-issue miniseries is by MacKenzie Cadenhead, Pasqual Ferry and João Lemos. It’s part of the larger One World Under Doom event that’ll run through Marvel’s titles next year.

In addition to featuring characters like Zoe, Doyle and Toth, Cadenhead said it will also feature some new faces.

“It was really fun to go through old Doom stories and pick out some random characters that exist in that world and find someone or someone’s kid who might be attending Doom Academy,” Cadenhead said. “And because the school doesn’t exist, we got to really play with stuff. Pasqual is having a great time coming up with beautiful locales.”

Vertigo will return as DC’s creator-owned imprint

Jim Lee announced the return of the iconic brand this weekend during the New York Comic Con.

At his Jim Lee & Friends Panel during this weekend’s New York Comic Con, DC Publisher Jim Lee announced plans to revive Vertigo, the long-running imprint that was home to Preacher, Fables, Y the Last Man and more over its more than 25-year history.

The imprint will under Chris Conroy and will feature creator-owned titles.

“This is my editorial dream come true,” Conroy said on social media. He currently oversees DC’s Black Label imprint as well, and confirmed Vertigo isn’t replacing it.

“DC Black Label continues, with some red-hot stories for DC’s superhero characters still on the way for years to come,” Conroy said. “Vertigo puts us back into the creator-owned business in a very big way. Yes, I’m running both; no, I haven’t lost my mind yet.”

The Carnage symbiote gets an unexpected host in ‘Eddie Brock: Carnage’

Coming out of ‘Venom War,’ the former King in Black will be wearing red.

Coming out of Marvel’s Venom War event, Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz will put an unexpected symbiote on Eddie Brock in the new ongoing series Eddie Brock: Carnage.

Coming out of this weekend’s New York Comic Con, Marvel shared more details on the aftermath of Venom War, which we already know connects a mysterious new host to the Venom symbiote. But somehow Eddie Brock will end up wearing the murderous Carnage symbiote.

“Carnage is someone that has to kill, so Eddie has to feed him deaths. In order for Eddie to be okay with that, the people he feeds Carnage are serial killers,” Soule said. “But Carnage is also an addict, and addicts need bigger and bigger highs…”
