Tom Taylor + Otto Schmidt get medieval again with ‘Dark Knights of Steel II’

The sequel to the DC Elseworlds fantasy saga brings a new war, a hidden traitor and a threat rising from beneath the waves.

DC has released details on Dark Knights of Steel II, a sequel to Tom Taylor and Otto Schmidt’s high-fantasy reimagining of the DC Universe. The 12-issue series will kick off on July 15.

The series features colors by Arif Prianto and letters by Wes Abbott, with a main cover by Yasmine Putri. The first issue will be followed on July 22 by Dark Knights of Steel II Special: Heir to the Sea #1, a 48-page one-shot collecting the Aquaman origin story first serialized in Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter.

“I was raised on comic books and fantasy novels,” Taylor said. “From as early as I can remember, my mind has been filled with universes of great heroes standing against corrupting evil and injustice. From the Discworld to the DCU, I have been thrilled by the epics and heroism of J.R.R. Tolkien and Mark Waid, by the humor and heart of Gail Simone, Joe Kelly and Terry Pratchett, by the jaw-dropping character arcs of Garth Ennis and Robin Hobb.”

DC announces six new Elseworlds projects for 2024

Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Greg Smallwood, Clay Mann and more will tell stories from across the DC multiverse.

DC will venture into the far corners of its multiverse next year with six new projects that were announced this week at the New York Comic Con.

Three of the projects are sequels to previous Elseworlds tales, including the well-regarded Gotham by Gaslight from 1989. They’ve also announced follow-ups to the recent Dark Knights of Steel miniseries and DC vs. Vampires, where several DC characters were turned into vampires and preceded to try and take over the world.

“Out-of-continuity stories have always been a pillar of DC publishing, granting creators the ability to explore all the wild corners of the DC Universe,” said DC Executive Editor Ben Abernathy. “We’re excited to bring a whole new slate of titles under the Elseworlds banner in 2024, combining some all-new titles from top storytellers, as well as sequels from the current DC line that fit that same out-of-continuity aesthetic.”

Hawkeye faces a new Ronin in January

Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt launch a new series focused on Marvel’s original Hawkeye.

Clint Barton will return to action as Hawkeye in a new solo title next year that’ll pit him against a new version of Ronin — one of his previous aliases.

Hawkeye: Freefall launches in January by writer Matthew Rosenberg, with art by Otto Schmidt and cover by Kim Jacinto.
