Exclusive Preview | A brutal and bloody look at ‘Cruel Kingdom’ #4

Take a look at a new story by Greg Pak, PJ Holden and John McCrea before it arrives in stores in April.

Courtesy of Oni Press, we’re pleased to share a preview of one of the stories from Cruel Kingdom #4, which arrives in stores April 2.

Cruel Kingdom is a fantasy anthology from Oni’s partnership with EC Comics, the notorious and influential publishing house from the 1950s. The anthology features two stories per issue, and today’s preview comes from “Headmistress,” a tale by Greg Pak, PJ Holden and John McCrea.

Paul Tobin + PJ Holden drop a ‘Dark Pyramid’ on Mad Cave Studios

The five-issue horror/mystery miniseries arrives in March.

Paul Tobin, writer of the recent String, The Mammoth and one of my favorites of 2024, Heart Acres, will team with The Lion and the Eagle artist PJ Holden for the five-issue miniseries Dark Pyramid, which Mad Cave Studios will publish in March.

Described as a combination of “pulse-pounding adventure, chilling horror and high-stakes mystery,” Dark Pyramid will take place in Alaska, specifically on and underneath Mt. Denali, as the girlfriend of a live-streaming adventurer searches for her missing boyfriend. The comic will feature colors by Sara Colella and letters by Taylor Esposito.

“Dark Pyramid is a series about uncovering mysteries, and our whole creation process was an ode to that. Such collaborative fun!” Tobin said. “At each step, the whole creative team saw opportunities to make the story and the characters better. More dynamic. More terrifying. More mysterious. It’s a comic about how comics should be made, and that made it into a series that will be loved.”

Sunday Comics | NASA’s STEM comic lifts off with a second issue

Today we look at webcomics by PJ Holden, Grant Snider, Melanine Gillman and more.

NASA launched a digital comic back in 2021 about a fictional astronaut named Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to walk on the moon. Now the second issue has made landing on their website, where it can be read or downloaded.

The story is meant to inspire “the next generation of explorers,” which NASA has dubbed the Artemis Generation, as they work on a real-life project to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon.

Ennis + Holden take flight in ‘The Lion & the Eagle’ next year

The war comic kicks off in February.

AfterShock Comics has announced a new prestige-format war comic coming from the team of Garth Ennis and PJ Holden next year.

The Lion and the Eagle will tell the story of the Chindits, a British special forces unit active in Burma during the Japanese occupation in 1944.

“The conflict between the British and Japanese in Burma is almost lost to history now; indeed, the British soldiers who fought there came to refer to themselves as The Forgotten Army,” Ennis said. “That’s partly what drew me to their story, a chance to keep alive the memories of the men who faced Imperial Japan. There’s also the political aspect, as the two warring nations find themselves fighting for possession of Burma and India, two countries who by and large would have preferred to have neither of these foreign powers on their soil.”

Karl Kerschl has been creating his award-winning webcomic The Abominable Charles Christopher on and off for more than a decade now, and this past week the lovable woodland creatures that inhabit his website were joined by a new visitor — Tanager, a new science fiction webcomic from Kerschl.

The description is fairly simple: A young woman with a strange gift travels the galaxy to help lost souls find their way home, but the execution is everything. In this first installment, she’s helping out an old man searching for something he lost on an alien-infested mining asteroid.

Dec. 5 is the 40th anniversary of the cult classic Flash Gordon film and to celebrate, King Features is doing a host of activities, like re-releasing the film, launching a motion comic and doing a comic strip anthology. Creators like June Brigman, Liniers, Erica Henderson and Tana Ford will participate in Flash Forward and create strips featuring the space-faring hero.
