Taiyō Matsumoto’s ‘Tokyo These Days’ wins an L.A. Times Book Prize

The critically acclaimed manga follows the story of a manga editor on the last day of his 30-year career.

The first volume of Tokyo These Days by Taiyō Matsumoto has won the 2025 L.A. Times Book prize in the Graphic Novel/Comics category.

Published by Viz, the manga was originally serialized in Japan from 2019 to 2023, appearing in the magazine Big Comic Original Zōkan. Viz published the first volume in the U.S. in January of 2024, followed by volume two in May and volume three in September, which completed the collection.

The story follows Kazuo Shiozawa, a veteran manga editor who resigns from a prestigious publishing company after 30 years. He spends his final day traveling around Tokyo visiting various creators he’s edited over the years, sharing wisdom and saying his goodbyes. Although Shiozawa begins the day believing he’s done with manga, he discovers that his connections to the community aren’t easily severed—and maybe manga isn’t done with him.

Nominees announced for the 45th annual L.A. Times Book Prize

Books by Ram V, Filipe Andrade, Bhanu Pratap and more have been nominated in the graphic novel category.

The Los Angeles Times has announced the finalists for this year’s L.A. Times Book Prize, which includes a category for Graphic Novels/Comics. The prize recognizes books published in 2024.

The Los Angeles Times has given an award in the graphic novel category since 2009, when Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli took home the award. Other winners include The Love Bunglers by Jaime Hernandez, Duncan the Wonder Dog by Adam Hines, Beverly by Nick Drnaso, Tillie Walden’s On a Sunbeam, The Hard Tomorrow by Eleanor Davis, R. Kikuo Johnson’s No One Else, and Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith’s Wash Day Diaries. A Guest in the House by EM Carroll won the award last year. 

The winners will be revealed on April 25. Check out the finalists for this year below.

‘Comics Day on Substack’ brings a new wave of creators to the platform

Grant Morrison, Tom King, Brian K. Vaughan, Niko Henrichon, Jen Bartel and more join the email newsletter platform.

If you’ve seen the acronym “CDoS” pop up in your email or feeds, you’re not getting spammed about collateralized debt obligation — well, maybe some of you are; I don’t know what you’re into. But in the comics realm, today CDoS stands for “Comics Day on Substack,” as the email newsletter platform welcomes several new creators, and their existing creators announce new projects and share free stuff.

Jen Bartel, Grant Morrison, Brian K. Vaughan, Elsa Charretier, Niko Henrichon, Khary Randolph and more join the likes of James Tynion IV, Chip Zdarsky, Skottie Young and more on the platform, which launched its comics-focused push last summer.

Comics Lowdown: Chelsea Saunders wins Locher Award
