‘Empyre’ wins the 2021 GLAAD award for ‘Outstanding Comic Book’

Marvel’s summer event series, which ended with Wiccan and Hulkling tying the knot, has been recognized by GLAAD.

The GLAAD Awards have recognized several comics from Marvel’s Empyre event for “Outstanding Comic Book” during their 2021 awards.

The recognition was announced on Twitter, where writers Al Ewing, Dan Slott and Anthony Oliveira were all featured in the acceptance video:

While Empyre featured characters from all across the Marvel Universe and focused specifically on Fantastic Four and Avengers, it was the continuing love story of Hulkling and Wiccan that served as the heart of the series. The award recognized the main Empyre miniseries, along with the Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling special and Empyre Aftermath: Avengers, where the couple finally married.

GLAAD recognized the writers and artists in their tweet, while Slott paid tribute to Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, creators of the Young Avengers series, who first brought the couple together.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, annually recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives. Ten comics and graphic novels were nominated in the “Outstanding Comic Book” category this year; you can see all the nominees here. Doctor Aphra, the Marvel comic featuring the character from the Star Wars universe, won the award last year.
