DC to publish ‘Super Sons’ digital title

Peter J. Tomasi returns for a third run starring Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne.

Peter J. Tomasi, who wrote DC’s previous two series starring Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne, will once again bring Superboy and Robin together for Challenge of the Super Sons.

The DC Digital First series will debut Dec. 14. Joining Tomasi for the 14-part series are artists Max Raynor, Jorge Corona and Evan Stanley, with Raynor set to draw the first chapter.

“Stories about Jon and Damian at this time in their lives allows me to tap back into those early years of my own life of being a crazy kid, while also allowing me to mine the fertile ground of my own son’s current adventures, which in turn helps keep me tapped into the general zeitgeist of today’s youth and what they’re going through and thinking about,” Tomasi said. “Jon and Damian are so different—the angel and the devil on your shoulder so to speak—with each one having such a distinctive backstory and perspective that the drama between them is organic and damn easy to bring to life on the page. Best of all, it’s a helluva lotta fun!”

DC to launch digital anthology series ‘Truth & Justice’

The series will kick off with a Vixen story by Geoffrey Thorne, Chris Cross and Jordi Tarragona.

DC has announced a new digital anthology series that will debut early next year called Truth & Justice, which will explore “the length and breadth of DC’s rich character history.” It’ll also serve as a new talent showcase of sorts for “new, emerging storytellers.”

Geoffrey Thorne, Chris Cross and Jordi Tarragona will team up for the first story, which will feature Vixen.

‘The One You Feed’ by Cates + Burnett debuts at Panel Syndicate

Pay what you want for the first digital issue of the new fantasy horror title.

The One You Feed, a new title by Donny Cates (Thor) and Dylan Burnett (Ant-Man) has debuted on Panel Syndicate.

The “fantasy terror tale” will be a five-issue miniseries, released digitally on the site in their standard “pay what you want format,” like they’ve done with previous titles like Friday, Barrier and The Private Eye.

comiXology Originals announces ‘Snow Angels’ by Lemire + Jock

The project will arrive in 2021.

After teasing it last week, comiXology Originals has announced a new title, Snow Angels, by Jeff Lemire and Jock.

The announcement — which is really more of a second teaser — doesn’t reveal anything about the project beyond the title and the two creators involved, and the company didn’t share anything else. You can watch it here:

DC announces changes for its ‘DC Universe’ app

As video content moves to HBO Max, ‘DC Universe Infinite’ will focus on comics.

As expected, DC announced changes this week to its DC Universe app, as it shifts from an “all-in-one” video/comic delivery system into one that focuses mainly on comics. The service was launched in 2018.

Original TV shows like Titans, Young Justice, Doom Patrol and Stargirl were once the big selling point of the platform, but all of those properties are finding new homes now, mostly on HBO Max, but also on The CW, in Stargirl‘s case. The release states that original shows and “classics” — as the app included many older DC movies and shows as well — will migrate to places like HBO Max, but the price point will stay the same. The service costs $7.99 a month, or $74.99 for one year (even with the loss of content).

“Our fans love the platform’s robust library of comic books and, with the transformation, we will not disappoint,” said DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee. “I’m excited to share that not only will DC Universe Infinite members still be able to read all of the great comics that they’ve enjoyed but new issues are debuting on the platform quicker than before, digital first exclusives are being created, and the members-only events will begin as soon as possible. There has never been a better time to be a DC fan!”

Chuck Austen returns to comics with ‘Edgeworld’

Austen team with Hawkman artist Patrick Olliffe on a new title for comiXology Originals.

Here’s a name that will likely bring a strong reaction from comics fans of a certain age — Chuck Austen will return to comics next week with Edgeworld, a new series from comiXology Originals.

Austen will write the series, with veteran artist Patrick Olliffe and colorist Lee Loughridge providing the art. It’s described as “an edgy expectation-busting western set in the far reaches of outer space.”

“Edgeworld is the place people need to go in order to get somewhere else, but not to stay,” said Austen, “It’s a temporary rest stop, a place to blow off some steam on a long journey between the stars. But no one stays on Pala unless the rest of the universe is done with them. No one, that is except for the oppressed Palans and their lone supporter, Killian Jess.”

Christian Cooper writes a new comic about his Central Park encounter

The comics writer makes his return in the first issue of DC’s ‘Represent!’ which is now free to download.

DC has released the first issue of a planned digital-first series called Represent!, featuring a story by Christian Cooper, Alitha E. Martinez, Mark Morales, Emilio Lopez and Rob Clark Jr. “It’s a Bird” is available to download for free.

Cooper, a former Marvel editor, was thrown into the national spotlight earlier this summer when a white woman walking her dog in New York’s Central Park called the cops on him and said as African-American was threatening her life — just because he asked her to keep her dog on its leash. The incident occurred on the same day that George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His story in this first issue is a fictionalized account of that encounter.

Rafael Albuquerque puts down his pencil, grabs the keyboard for ‘Funny Creek’

Albuquerque co-wrote the new miniseries with Rafael Scavone for comiXology Originals.

Although probably best known for his award-winning work as an artist on American Vampire, Rafael Albuquerque will take a different role on Funny Creek, a new miniseries debuting from comiXology Originals this week.

Rafael Albuquerque co-wrote the miniseries with Rafael Scavone. Eduardo Medeiros drew it, with colors by Priscilla Tramontano and letters by Bernardo Brice. Bis Stringer Horne edited the project. Funny Creek is the first of four comic books coming out of the comiXology Originals multi-book deal with Stout Club Entertainment.

“We’ve wanted to collaborate in a new project for a long time and finally decided on a book aimed for young readers, which is not our comfort zone at all,” said Albuquerque. “While brainstorming ideas, heavy subjects kept coming to our minds, and we decided that we should not avoid, but embrace them—figuring out how an 8-year old kid would deal with things like loss, guilt and grief. That was the path where we found something unique and interesting for both young and mature audiences.”

Humanoids has released a hard-to-find Metabarons short story by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Mœbius on ComiXology this week, just in time for ComicCon@Home. You can purchase it for 99 cents.

Coffee, ghosts + romance: Christmas + Luiz team for ‘Crema’

The graphic novel by Johnnie Christmas, Dante Luiz and Ryan Ferrier arrives from comiXology Originals next week.

ComiXology Originals will drop another new graphic next week titled Crema. The digital release is by the creative team of Johnnie Christmas (Tartarus), Hugo-Award finalist Dante Luiz and letterer Ryan Ferrier.

“I wrote most of it in coffee shops around Vancouver, pounding copious amounts of caffeine and listening to hours of cafe talk,” Christmas said. “Dante’s art is beautiful. We were going for magical realism and fabulism in the modern context, utilizing color shifts in places to further heighten romance and ghostly terror.”

‘Virtually Yours’ by Holt + Beals arrives July 14 from comiXology Originals

The new graphic novel is a “rom-com for the digital age.’

ComiXology Originals has announced another new graphic novel that they plan to release July 14 — Virtually Yours, a “rom-com for the digital age” by writer Jeremy Holt and artist Elizabeth Beals, with lettering by Adam Wollet.

“If the quarantine has been an indicator, access to high-speed internet has become society’s lifeline. As connective as this new virtual landscape has and can be, it cannot replace the absence of interacting in a three-dimensional space,” Holt said in the press release. “Particularly when it comes to all stages of a romantic relationship. Virtually Yours focuses on one particular aspect, which is the notion that a simulated online connection can be equally as genuine as a random face-to-face one. In this day and age, I’d argue that they’ve become interchangeable. With the advent of robust chat software, online dating has evolved from simply facilitating an eventual in-person meet up to hosting dates in their entirety. This has dynamically altered our ideas, notions and expectations of courtship because the physicality component has been removed. Creative problem solving is the name of the game, and I for one support the notion of pioneering new and sustainable ways to be human.”

DC launches ‘Harley Quinn Black + White + Red’ digital series

The first issue of the anthology series features a new story by Stjepan Šejić.

DC launched a new digital series today, Harley Quinn Black + White + Red, an anthology series that will feature stories about Harley Quinn by a variety of creators. It’s kind of like Batman: Black & White, only with Harley Quinn. And the color red.

Stjepan Šejić, creator of the Black Label Harleen series, is featured in the first issue, which is available now. His story is set in that world.

“In Harleen canon, this story takes place after the fallout with the Joker and before the forming of the Sirens,” Šejić said. “A lot of stuff has happened in that time and some of it is hinted at in both her flashbacks and conversational nods.”
