NYCC | Joshua Williamson returns to Marvel to write ‘Iron Man’

The writer of ‘Superman’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ takes on the Armored Avenger in January.

It’s been almost a decade since Joshua Williamson did any work for Marvel, as he’s flown his flag for the past 10 years at DC and Image, writing high-profile titles like Superman, G.I. Joe and more. But he’ll make his return to the House of Ideas next year to write Iron Man.

Williamson will work with artist Carmen Carnero on the title, which will feature Madame Masque, members of the classic Thunderbolts team and a new archenemy.

“I am a huge Iron Man fan. A massive Iron Man fan… and I knew it was time. I absolutely had to do this,” said Williamson. “Part of our tagline for this book is that Tony Stark is the most dangerous weapon in the Marvel Universe. When he went into the cave, Tony built the armor… but after I thought about it more, the armor wasn’t what he built in the cave. Tony built Tony.”

NYCC | Rick Veitch + Michael Zulli’s unpublished ‘Swamp Thing’ story will finally come to print

‘Swamp Thing 1989’ will be published as a four-issue Black Label series next year.

One of comics’ most infamous “lost” stories is finally coming to print. At New York Comic Con during their Vertigo panel, DC announced that Rick Veitch and Michael Zulli’s unpublished Swamp Thing #88 from 1989 will finally be published, the first issue of a four-issue miniseries that’ll wrap up the story Veitch originally intended to tell.

Swamp Thing 1989 will kick off in April of next year as a Black Label title, with the first issue containing the completed but never published issue. It’ll be followed by three new issues, written by Veitch with art by Tom Mandrake and Trish Mulvihill. Zulli, unfortunately, passed away last year.

NYCC | ‘X-Men: Shadows of Tomorrow’ will follow ‘Age of Revelation’

Marvel has announced yet another X-Men publishing initiative that’ll come in the wake of their current crossover.

X-Men: Age of Revelation is just a little more than a week old, so it must be time to announce what comes next. At the New York Comic Con, Marvel revealed Shadows of Tomorrow, which will include 11 new/returning titles in the X-Men line.

To catch you up: in the wake of the well-regarded Krakoa era of the X-Men, spearheaded by Jonathan Hickman and continuing for a number of years, Marvel launched X-Men: From the Ashes, which was a return to a more traditional approach, where the world once again hated and feared mutants. Rather than living on a mutant paradise island, the characters were scattered, from Alaska to New Orleans, where they tried to pick up their lives again.

Reception has been tepid, at best, to the new line, with several of the launch titles not making it very far itno their runs. Then all of them ended in September to make way for Age of Revelation, a story set 10 years in the future, where Doug Ramsey, the former New Mutant turned Heir of Apocalypse, ruled with an iron fist. That story is just getting started and is set to run through December, a short-term event like Age of Apocalypse, but the nature of comic news, retailing and solicitations means it’s time to turn to January.

If you were a fan of the From the Ashes books, the good news is that several of the creators who worked on them will return to the characters they were working on after Age of Revelation. There are also some new titles coming, with a big focus on solo X-titles/duos vs. team books (although we’ll see those, too). Let’s have a look:

NYCC | Zorro strikes twice in 2026 with new projects from Alien Books

Alien Books follows its ‘Zorro Remastered’ crowdfunding project with a pair of new series for 2026, created by Howard Chaykin, Jorge Fornés, Dan Abnett and Aaron Lopresti.

Building on the success of this year’s Zorro Remastered Kickstarter campaign, Alien Books has announced two new miniseries starring the legendary masked avenger, both set to debut in 2026.

“We’re building something truly special for both Zorro and comic book fans,” said Alien Books Editor-in-Chief Matias Timarchi. “It’s a dream come true to be working with creators of this caliber.”

NYCC | Vertigo is back next year with new ‘100 Bullets,’ Deniz Camp, Kyle Starks, Ram V + more

DC’s creator-owned imprint returns with 10 titles in 2026.

It’s been almost a year since DC announced they were bringing Vertigo back from the dead as their creator-owned imprint, with the only project coming out under the banner being The Nice House by the Sea by James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martínez Bueno and Jordie Bellaire.

At New York Comic Con this week, DC pulled back the curtain on a full wave of creator-owned titles set to roll out in 2026. The panel “DC Vertigo: We’re Back,” moderated by Executive Editor Chris Conroy, was the first public showcase of the imprint’s comeback and the creators — some new, some familiar — who will bring it back to life.

The return will see 10 titles in 2026, including the return of The Nice House by the Sea with issue #7 in February. Joining Nice House are nine more series spanning horror, science fiction, noir and more:

NYCC | Rock out with ‘Superpunk’ next year

Oni Press will publish the punk-rock graphic novel by Guilherme Petreca and Mirtes Santana next year.

Lace up your Vans, charge your walkman and get ready to crank the volume: Oni Press has announced Superpunk, a new middle-grade graphic novel from artist Guilherme Petreca and writer Mirtes Santana, and it looks like pure punk rock comics in the best way possible.

Superpunk follows Violeta, a 13-year-old skateboarder and podcaster who discovers her grandfather’s old cassette player…and decides to play a tape backward. Naturally, that gives her musical superpowers and accidentally unleashes a horde of monsters on her hometown of Hollow Hills. Just like the 1980s warned us about.

“We wanted to make a comic that feels like a punk mixtape – loud, full of heart, and carrying you until the very last beat,” Santana said.

NYCC | Nick Cagnetti + Daniel Ziegler rise from the grave with ‘Spirit of the Shadows’

The five-issue miniseries debuts in January.

Oni Press has announced Spirit of the Shadows, a five-issue supernatural superhero series from writer/artist Nick Cagnetti and co-writer Daniel Ziegler. It marks Cagnetti’s first full-length art project since his breakout Pink Lemonade.

The bold, neon-hued dive into the afterlife will debut in January.

“This series goes to a lot of crazy spooky places,” Cagnetti said. “It’s an intricate web of revelation, revenge, and redemption that constantly leaves you gasping at the moral quandaries. I can’t wait for readers to see this book finally!”

‘Beneath the Trees, ‘The Cartoonists Club’ + more win at the 2025 Harvey Awards

The annual awards and Hall of Fame inductions were presented last night in conjunction with the New York Comic Con.

Last night the Harvey Awards were presented for the 37th time across seven categories at an event held in conjunction with the New York Comic Con.

In addition to the awards, the Harvey committee also inducted five creators into their Hall of Fame: 

  • Wendy and Richard Pini, the visionary couple behind ElfQuest, whose groundbreaking fantasy series inspired a generation of fantasy readers.
  • Patrick McDonnell, creator of the long-running comic strip Mutts and more recently the graphic novel The Super Hero’s Journey.
  • John Byrne, legendary and controversial artist and writer remembered for his iconic runs on X-Men, Fantastic Four and Superman, among others.
  • Peter David (honored posthumously), acclaimed writer of stuff known for his character-driven storytelling on The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, Young Justice, Fallen Angel and more.
  • Barbara Shermund (honored posthumously), a pioneering cartoonist and one of the first women to contribute to The New Yorker, known for her sharp wit and social insight.
