Deadpool + Punisher collide in Benjamin Percy’s ‘Big Guns’ crossover this September

The four-part crossover launches runs through ‘Wade Wilson: Deadpool’ and ‘Punisher.’

Marvel Comics is marking June 16 — that’s “616 Day” — with the announcement of “Big Guns,” a four-part crossover launching in September that runs through Benjamin Percy’s Wade Wilson: Deadpool and Punisher series.

The crossover kicks off in Wade Wilson: Deadpool #8, which is illustrated by Geoff Shaw, then continues in Punisher #8, which is drawn by José Luis Soares.

“When you’re writing The Punisher, and you’re writing Deadpool—two street-level characters with opposite personalities—the math works itself out,” Percy said. “I had to bring them together. Violently. Get ready for non-stop mayhem, the re-invention (and glow-up) of a classic villain, and the introduction of the Merc-mobile (a rolling HQ I’m pretty damn excited about) as well as a new weapon that will change the 616 forever. Unlike Frank and Wade—who naturally despise each other—Geoff Shaw and José Luis are a perfect pairing, the best pens drawing the biggest guns.”

NYCC | ‘X-Men: Shadows of Tomorrow’ will follow ‘Age of Revelation’

Marvel has announced yet another X-Men publishing initiative that’ll come in the wake of their current crossover.

X-Men: Age of Revelation is just a little more than a week old, so it must be time to announce what comes next. At the New York Comic Con, Marvel revealed Shadows of Tomorrow, which will include 11 new/returning titles in the X-Men line.

To catch you up: in the wake of the well-regarded Krakoa era of the X-Men, spearheaded by Jonathan Hickman and continuing for a number of years, Marvel launched X-Men: From the Ashes, which was a return to a more traditional approach, where the world once again hated and feared mutants. Rather than living on a mutant paradise island, the characters were scattered, from Alaska to New Orleans, where they tried to pick up their lives again.

Reception has been tepid, at best, to the new line, with several of the launch titles not making it very far into their runs. Then all of them ended in September to make way for Age of Revelation, a story set 10 years in the future, where Doug Ramsey, the former New Mutant turned Heir of Apocalypse, ruled with an iron fist. That story is just getting started and is set to run through December, a short-term event like Age of Apocalypse, but the nature of comic news, retailing and solicitations means it’s time to turn to January.

If you were a fan of the From the Ashes books, the good news is that several of the creators who worked on them will return to the characters they were working on after Age of Revelation. There are also some new titles coming, with a big focus on solo X-titles/duos vs. team books (although we’ll see those, too). Let’s have a look:

Thunderbolt Ross faces off with Doom in Benjamin Percy + Geoff Shaw’s ‘Red Hulk’

The One World Under Doom tie-in series begins in February.

The Sabretooth War team of Benjamin Percy and Geoff Shaw are moving to a new front, as they put the Red Hulk under the thumb of the new sorcerer supreme Doctor Doom … and as you can imagine, that doesn’t really work for Thunderbolt Ross.

Red Hulk #1 arrives in February, right around the time the character will make an appearance in the fourth Captain America movie. It’ll tie into Marvel’s bigger publishing initiative, One World Under Doom.

“When I learned about the One World Under Doom event, my mind immediately went to Thunderbolt Ross,” Percy said. “A global takeover would not be tolerated by a man who bleeds red, white and blue (but especially red). And his experience—as a soldier in the field, as a military strategist in the war room, as a walking weapon of mass destruction—would make him someone Doom would target well before he made his move.”

So Ross is Doom’s pick for his secretary of defense — I can think of worse choices. At least he’s qualified, right?

“I proposed a story in which Ross would be kidnapped by Doom and forced into a ‘Think Tank’ prison in which he would test out various war-time scenarios,” Percy said. “That’s where we begin: in a book that does not give you a second to breathe. It moves and moves and moves with constant action and tension.”

‘Incredible Hulk’ #800 will bring a ‘complete status quo reset’

Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Nic Klein,Greg Pak, Benjamin Percy, Torunn Grønbekk, Geoff Shaw and more will contribute to the milestone issue.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein’s monster-filled Incredible Hulk saga will come to a head in Incredible Hulk #19 this November, which because of math doubles as the 800th issue.

They’ll be joined by Greg Pak, Benjamin Percy, Torunn Grønbekk, Geoff Shaw, Lynne Yoshii, and Lan Medina, who will contribute stories to the oversized issue.

“It’s a tremendous honor to write a landmark issue of one of the biggest titles in comics, and we are NOT wasting the opportunity,” Johnson said. “Fans are finally going to see the throwdown between Hulk and Eldest, Nic Klein’s craziest Hulk transformation to date, an INSANE reveal featuring Hulk’s sidekick Charlie, and a complete status quo reset that will propel us into uncharted territory in 2025 and beyond.”

Wolverine + Sabretooth will go to war again in the 10-part ‘Sabretooth War’

The story by Benjamin Percy, Victor LaValle, Cory Smith and Geoff Shaw begins in January.

If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that at some point, Wolverine and Sabretooth are going to fight again. This time around, that battle will last for 10 issues of Wolverine’s regular title and will be “the most violent Wolverine story ever told,” according to Marvel.

“Sabretooth is the definition of big bad—one of the nastiest, cruelest, scariest villains in the 616 and Wolverine’s greatest nemesis,” Percy said. “Which is exactly why we haven’t allowed their stories to intersect—during this age of Krakoa—until now. The tension has built up painfully, and now these two savage titans are going to claw and slash their way into each other’s lives again in what will be the most violent Wolverine story in Marvel history.”

For the story, Percy will joined by novelist Victor LaValle, who has written several series featuring Sabretooth in recent years. Each chapter will be “led” by one of the two main characters, with Cory Smith drawing the Wolverine issues and Geoff Shaw drawing those featuring Sabretooth.

Marvel will revisit ‘Days of Future Past’ in a new miniseries

Marc Guggenheim and Manuel García will tell the story leading up to the monumental issues by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

The back story leading up to one of the greatest story arcs in the history of X-Men comics will be revealed in a new miniseries by Marc Guggenheim and Manuel Garcia.

“Days of Future Past” appeared in Uncanny X-Men #141-142 and still resonates with many X-Men fans today. Those two issues helped set the tone for the series for many years after it, as Chris Claremont and John Byrne shared the consequences of where the prejudice and hate against mutants could ultimately lead. It also helped solidify the idea that Magneto could be an ally to the X-Men and introduced Rachel Summers, who would find her way back to the past to join the current day X-Men. And how many variant covers owe their lives to Byrne’s cover for issue #141?

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Doomsday will tell the story of the events leading up to the future state where mutants were kept in concentration camps and a small group of scrappy X-Men fought back — and lost.

“Growing up, I never thought I’d get the chance to write the X-Men as many times as I have. I particularly never thought I’d be able to play around in the amazing timeline that Chris Claremont and John Byrne brought to life in ‘Days of Future Past,'” Guggenheim told Marvel.com. “I still have the most vivid memory of visiting the stationery store where I used to buy my comics and seeing Uncanny X-Men #141 on the rack. That iconic cover blew my nine year-old mind.”

Ghost Rider + Wolverine will team up this summer in ‘Weapons of Vengeance’

Two Marvel anti-heroes reunite courtesy of writer Benjamin Percy and artist Geoff Shaw.

Writer Benjamin Percy has been tearing it up in the pages of Ghost Rider and Wolverine, and come this summer he’ll bring the two characters together for Weapons of Vengeance.

The event will kick off, naturally, with an Alpha issue, titled Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance. Drawn by Geoff Shaw, the Alpha issue will recount the first encounter between Johnny Blaze and Wolverine.

“Wolverine is metal. Ghost Rider is metal. Together, their adamantium and chrome weigh in as HEAVY METAL!” Percy told Marvel.com. “You know how Metallica and Iron Maiden have toured together, shredded out songs, wailed on music videos? This is a little like that. I write the sheet music that Geoff Shaw brings to pyrotechnic, guitar-smashing life. You’re in for a head-banging good time, I promise.”

Mail Call | Z2 to publish graphic novel inspired by All Time Low

Z2 Comics has announced another music-related collaboration, this time with the pop-punk band All Time Low. In June, the publisher will release a graphic novel inspired by the 2017 album Last Young Renegade.

“When we wrote our album ‘Last Young Renegade’ we imagined an entire world separate of our own, almost a “what if” version of All Time Low, both with our musical sound and with the visual narrative we put together around it” says All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth. “Creating ‘Young Renegades’ the graphic novel allows us to tell more stories in the universe we imagined and delve deeper into the mythos and thematic ideas that were at play when we were celebrating that era. ‘Young Renegades’ is another branch, another thread and another look into the LYR continuity through an incredible medium we’ve never collaborated in before. Working with the story-tellers and artists on this project has been an incredible new undertaking and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy it with us.”

Young Renegades will be written by Tres Dean and Robert Wilson IV, with art by Megan Huang.

‘Crossover’ blurs the line between fact and fiction [Preview]

The new title by the creators of ‘God Country’ arrives in November.

Image Comics has released a preview of the first issue of Crossover, the new series coming from Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Dee Cunniffe and John J Hill that was revealed this week during Comic-Con@Home.

Referred to by Cates as the “scariest” project he’s ever tried to produce, but also “the most exciting thing I’ve ever done” during their CCI@Home panel Crossover is about what happens when a big summer event book crosses over into the real world.

CCI@Home: ‘Crossover’ team reveals details on the new title

Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Dee Cunniffe and John J. Hill discuss their upcoming ‘anti-event’ title.

After teasing their new comic earlier this month, Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Dee Cunniffe and John J. Hill revealed more details about Crossover during a virtual panel as a part of Comic-Con@Home.

“Crossover is the scariest goddamn book I have ever attempted to produce in my entire life, and that is why it’s the most exciting thing I’ve ever done,” Cates said. He compared it to “Avengers: Endgame, but as Cloverfield,” then shared that the idea came to him while talking to Geoff Shaw about event comics back in 2017, before he worked for Marvel.

Cates, Shaw deliver magic swords to Texas in ‘God Country’

The creative team behind ‘Buzzkill’ create a new series from Image Comics.

The creative team behind Buzzkill and The Paybacks will re-team for God Country, due out from Image Comics in January.

Described as “Southern Bastards meets American Gods,” God Country, by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, tells the story of an old man with dementia in Texas whose small town is destroyed by a tornado — which also happens to deliver a mystical sword that restores his mind and body. Then he fights monsters!

“This is a story Geoff and I have been wanting to tell for such a long time, and to be able to do it with Image is beyond a dream come true,” said Cates in the press release. “God Country is full of heart, action, giant swords, Kirby Gods, Texans, magic tornados, and family drama…so it’s really just everything I love piled into one great, epic yarn. This January everyone is welcome to come on in, grab a beer, have a seat and get ready… we have a hell of a story to tell you.”
