Dynamite Entertainment is launching a new era of ThunderCats comics this fall, with writer Greg Pak and artist David Cousens helming ThunderCats #1 in October.
The series picks up with the ThunderCats on Third Earth, sharing the planet with their buddies the SilverHawks, their enemies the Mu’Tants and other as-yet-undiscovered entities. Lion-O, still maturing into his role as Lord of the ThunderCats, must contend with the arrival of the Feral King, who rides in on a meteor and whose intentions could break the fragile peace among Third Earth’s tribes.
Pak, known for his work on Planet Hulk and Darth Vader, said the new run leans into the franchise’s mix of science fiction and fantasy.
“I’ve been hungry to dig into a story like this for years,” Pak said. “Anything can happen on Third Earth, and if you’ve ever watched the original ThunderCats cartoons, you know that anything and everything did. There’s a huge element of surprise and wildness to this particular mix of science fiction and fantasy, and we’re taking it as far as we can. I’m also thrilled to be working on a story that feels deeply relevant about heroes slamming up against the limits of monarchy and teetering between triumph and catastrophe as they struggle to become a free people. Huge fun, massive action, big emotion, and searing relevance? You want this book!”
Cousens, who did interior art on the Cheetara: Worldbreaker special, is joined by Igor Monti on colors, Jeff Eckleberry on letters and Nate Cosby continuing as editor.
ThunderCats #1 will feature covers by Cousens, Mark Spears, Daniele Cellini, Stephen Byrne and Seth Damoose, along with the now-requisite blind bag variants promising an unspecified “huge surprise” Dynamite says will be a first for the publisher.
The series launches alongside the previously announced ThunderCats: Cheetara, the character’s first ongoing solo series, from writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Andrea Arcari. Both titles follow the conclusion of the ThunderCats X SilverHawks crossover, which wrapped Dynamite’s initial “ThunderVerse” era.
