Quick Hits | Warren Ellis, Small Press Expo, Dragon Awards

Plus: News on John Byrne’s ‘Elsewhen,’ Andy Fish and more.

Publishers | Image Comics has announced a new project by Warren Ellis, Ghost Drive Station, after stating that they would not work with him again until he made amends to his sexual misconduct victims. Ellis was one of many creators called out for their behavior in 2020, when his numerous victims created a website that outlined the allegations as well as a path to make amends.

Ellis lost work in the comics industry as a result, and has not had any new comics work published since then (although some of his past publishers have released collected editions that included his work). In 2021, artist Ben Templesmith announced plans for the return of Fell, his comic with Ellis, which led to Image offering a statement that said, “Image Comics will not be working with Warren on anything further until he has made amends to the satisfaction of all involved.”

The creators of the SoManyofUs website last updated it in 2023, stating that, “to the best of our knowledge, Warren Ellis took none of the steps we hoped he would. A mediated accountability process with Warren Ellis is not possible at present, and we do not anticipate our involvement in any progress he might make in the future.” It does not sound like any amends were ever made.

John Arcudi, Mark Buckingham + Dave Stewart will bring Kull back to comics next year

Titan Comics revealed the creative team for the new title at San Diego Comic-Con last week.

Sometimes Comic-Con news can slip through the cracks amidst the huge wave of announcements that are made during the week. But hey, that’s what follow-up press releases are for. Case in point — at their panel last Saturday, Titan Comics announced the creative team for their upcoming Kull reboot.

Writer John Arcudi, artist Mark Buckingham and colorist Dave Stewart will bring the King of Atlantis back to comics in “early” 2027. Titan also shared a look at some art by Buckingham:

Take a look inside ‘Marvel Dimensions’ by Alex Ross

New preview pages from Ross’ upcoming graphic novel offer a glimpse at the Original Human Torch’s origin.

After giving San Diego Comic-Con attendees an early glimpse at his upcoming graphic novel Marvel Dimensions, Alex Ross has released the book’s first lettered interior pages online. The six-page preview, which leads up to the Original Human Torch’s origin, offers readers their first look inside the hardcover ahead of its Sept. 1 release from Abrams ComicArts.

The preview showcases the lush painted artwork Ross is known for while introducing readers to what initially appears to be a celebration of Marvel’s greatest heroes. But according to Abrams, appearances can be deceiving …

SDCC Slugfest | The morning after edition

With SDCC 2026 in the books, we round up news from DC, Mad Cave, Marvel and more.

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you. With the 2026 San Diego Comic Con wrapped up, this edition covers news and tidbits from the weekend I haven’t already covered. Hit the links for more information.

Following several DC Next Level reveals and their big Eisner wins on Friday night, DC continued to roll out announcements and previews over the weekend. Here’s a rundown of what they shared …

The Metropolis & Beyond Panel held on Saturday brought news of the October debuting DC All In Saga: Darkseid vs. the World. This one is by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Sanford Greene and Yasmine Putri, and will “present the hidden past of the being called Uxus, his descent into Darkseid, and his plans for the fate of all creation.” Yes, it is a Darkseid origin story, and we’re getting a pre-teen Darkseid out of it:

First trailer for Bill Sienkiewicz documentary ‘That Polish Guy’ debuts at SDCC

The film explores the artist’s career through interviews with Vincent D’Onofrio, Jim Lee, Jimmy Palmiotti and more.

The first trailer for Bill Sienkiewicz: That Polish Guy dropped during a San Diego Comic-Con panel, giving fans a look at the upcoming documentary on the influential artist. The title comes from a nickname Sienkiewicz received from actor-director Clint Eastwood.

Sienkiewicz was joined by the documentary’s director Remsy Atassi and producer Sal Abbinanti at the con to discuss his career and the making of the film, followed by an audience Q&A.

“I’m incredibly excited about the documentary; it’s both humbling and nerve-wracking to see my life’s work splayed out on-screen accompanied by observations by so many of my creative heroes,” said Sienkiewicz. “But more, I’m excited because the documentary discusses the obsessive need to make art, as part of the unifying human experience, a drive that defies language, place or even medium of choice. That drive is something we all share and I’m proud, in the words of the great Cormac McCarthy, to carry that fire.”

Mad Cave Studios revives Rip Kirby with new series from Christopher Sebela + Tango

The classic detective returns courtesy of the partnership between Mad Cave and King Features.

Mad Cave Studios is reviving another King Features character, Rip Kirby, the detective created by Alex Raymond and Ward Greene in 1946.

The all-new series is written by High Crimes writer Christopher Sebela and drawn by Power Rangers artist Tango. They’ll be joined by colorist KJ Diaz, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry on the series, which will kick off in November.

The Rip Kirby comic strip ran from 1946 to 1999. An ex-marine, Rip Kirby was Raymond’s return to the comics page after the artist returned from World War II. The strip set itself apart from the hard-boiled detectives of its era, with Kirby solving cases through intelligence, scientific reasoning and observation, an approach that helped redefine crime fiction and left a lasting mark on newspaper strips.

Christian Ward + Hernán González bring Event Horizon trilogy to a close with Pandemonium

The finale to IDW’s horror trilogy arrives in comic shops this December.

Christian Ward will close out the Event Horizon trilogy this December with Event Horizon: Pandemonium, joined by artist Hernán González.

The comic series, based on Paramount Pictures’ 1997 film and published under the IDW Dark imprint, kicked off with Event Horizon: Dark Descent in 2025, and continued into Event Horizon: Inferno, which is being published now.

“It’s been such a huge honor to have been trusted with this beloved property that means so much to so many, myself included,” said Ward. “It’s no secret that when I was first invited by IDW editor Nicolas Niño to pitch what my take on Event Horizon would be, what I ended up proposing went far beyond the prequel Dark Descent. I pitched a trilogy that would take even wilder swings and make fans look at the 1997 film in a completely different way, and Pandemonium was always the end goal. Myself and the incredible artist Hernán González are taking you even deeper into the Chaos Realm. Event Horizon will never be the same very again. All roads have been leading us here… to Heaven!”

Shadow of the Bat, Static, Vixen are Next Level at DC

Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez, Stephanie Williams, Khary Randolph, Cody Ziglar and Diego Olortegui helm the next wave of Next Level titles.

DC’s Next Level panel yesterday at the San Diego Comic Con was the gift that kept on giving. Not only did they finally officially announce titles featuring Jonah Hex and The Demon, but they also announced three more titles — one we knew was coming, and two we didn’t.

First up is Shadow of the Bat, which has been teased but we weren’t aware of the creative team until this weekend. And what a creative team it is — Deniz Camp and Javier Rodríguez, the team behind the recently wrapped Absolute Martian Manhunter and the big winners at last night’s Eisner Awards.

“We’re going to try to do some new things with Batman. I hope you’ll join us,” Camp said on social media.

Tim Seeley, Aaron Campbell + Ben Templesmith bring my Summerween nightmares to life in ’12 Foot Skeleton’

The new series debuts from Ignition Press in October.

So are you familiar with the term “Summerween,” which has somehow made it into my vernacular despite my best efforts? It actually comes from the TV show Gravity Falls, from an episode where they celebrated Halloween in the summer, which is ok, great even; I’m a big fan of Halloween.

But at my house “Summerween” is the term my wife uses when the Halloween decorations go out at CostCo, Home Depot and [insert the name of any retailer way too close to my house] here. It happens sometime at the end of June, and some years it can be scarier than Halloween. Now, we do not own the very popular giant skeletons that have infiltrated neighborhoods around the United States — we had a neighbor in California who kept theirs up all year and re-decorated it based on the next holiday — but we do have this monstrosity, among other decorations.

But that giant skeleton has become such a phenomenon that it’s getting its own comic, 12 Foot Skeleton, courtesy of Ignition Press, writers Tim Seeley and Aaron Campbell, and artist Ben Templesmith. I mean, who better to help channel my nightmares about Summerween?

Your 2026 Eisner Award winners

‘Absolute Martian Manhunter’ and its creative team took home multiple awards on the comic industry’s biggest night.

The winners of the 2026 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were announced Friday night in San Diego, after being accidentally leaked a few days before. That didn’t stop the event from happening, however, or the excitement for the winners, and we carried on posting results on BlueSky.

Javier Rodriguez had a big night, taking home three Eisners, all tied to Absolute Martian Manhunter: Best Limited Series, Best Penciller/Inker and Best Cover Artist. His collaborator, Deniz Camp, wasn’t far behind with two wins for, again, Best Limited Series for Absolute Martian Manhunter and Best New Series for Assorted Crisis Events. Overall DC walked away with the most wins of any publisher. Abrams and Fantagraphics also had multiple wins at the event.

In addition to the Eisners, other awards given out included:

  • The Bill Finger Award, which went to Jenny Blake Isabella and Martin Pasko.
  • The Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award, which went to Stipan Morian.
  • The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, presented to Richard and Wendy Pini.
  • The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailing Award, which went to Books With Pictures in Eugene, Oregon.
  • And of course the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, which had 23 inductees this year.

The Punisher faces off with the Predator in a new miniseries

Frank Tieri and Jesús Saíz bring ‘pop culture’s greatest killing machines’ together for a bloody confrontation.

The Punisher is popping up everywhere these days, from numerous comic miniseries to Disney+ specials to big budget blockbusters like the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But he’s found someone who won’t be so happy to see him, as he faces off the Predator in a new miniseries.

The four-issue miniseries by Frank Tieri and Jesús Saíz will put Frank Castle against the galaxy’s greatest hunter, following in the footsteps of Black Panther, Wolverine and other Marvel characters who have faced off with the aliens.

James Harren unleashes ‘The Demon’ in DC’s latest Next Level series

Jason Blood wrestles with the Demon Etrigan bound to his soul as Hell’s monsters feast on humanity in the shadows.

And here’s another Next Level series that joins DC’s growing line: Ultramega creator James Harren will give us all hell in The Demon, which he will both write and draw. He’ll be joined by colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Clayton Cowles.

It joins other recent Next Level launches like Batwoman, Lobo, Deathstroke: The Terminator, The Fury of Firestorm and Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death, which I just finished posting about.
