AHOY Comics announces more ‘Captain Ginger,’ ‘Wrong Earth’ prequel

The publisher will also bring back ‘Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter Of Terror’ in October.

AHOY Comics has announced follow-ups to three of their previous titles, including a prequel for The Wrong Earth, and sequels for Captain Ginger and Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter Of Terror.

“The third wave of AHOY Comic Magazines sees the return of some fan favorite faces,” Publisher Hart Seely said. “And what’s exciting to me, as both a reader and the publisher, is that each of these stories takes these characters to unexpected places. What happens when cats meet dogs in the far reaches of outer space? Is there something evil about being a superhero? Readers who wanted more of these stories can dive right in, but they also work as stand alone stories that provide a jumping-on point for readers who have only recently discovered AHOY.”

Fantastic Four gets the ‘Grand Design’ treatment courtesy of Tom Scioli

The two-issue series kicks off in October.

Fans of Tom Scioli‘s creative and inspired approach to comics are in for a treat — the creator behind American Barbarian, Go-Bots and Transformers vs. G.I. Joe will turn his attention to Marvel’s first family in Fantastic Four: Grand Design.

“Fantastic Four is like the Magna Carta of Marvel, this founding document, so being allowed to get my hands on it is thrilling,” Scioli told Comicbook.com. “They’ve given me a tremendous amount of creative freedom to just go for it.”

‘John Constantine, Hellblazer’ joins the Sandman Universe titles this fall

Simon Spurrier, Marcio Takara and Aaron Campbell take the character back to his roots.

After a move to the regular DC Universe, a movie, a TV show and even the announcement of a YA graphic novel, John Constantine will go back to basics in a new Hellblazer title this fall, as part of the Neil Gaiman-curated Sandman Universe line.

The day before Halloween will bring a one-shot by Simon Spurrier and artist Marcio Takara titled The Sandman Universe Presents Hellblazer. That’ll be followed by a new ongoing titled John Constantine, Hellblazer by Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell.

“Year One was just the start. Now you get to inhabit the worlds, books and houses we built for you,” said Gaiman. “I was thrilled when I was told that John Constantine—the original, demon-haunted one who first showed up in Swamp Thing’s ‘American Gothic’ story—is coming back to his murky and dangerous roots. More magic and more darkness and not a few gods and dreams are here for you to explore.”

Haberlin + Hine team up for ‘The Marked’

New series from Image Comics due out in October.

Brian Haberlin and David Hine (Sonata) will re-team for a new series from Image Comics titled The Marked.

“The Marked is my chance to do magical, dark and sexy,” Haberlin said in the press release. “The world may seem familiar, but what lies beneath is certainly not. A world readers of my old series Aria and The Wicked will recognize and maybe we’ll even see some characters from those books appear along the way in this new series!”

Becky Lynch takes center ring in new ‘Smackdown Live’ comic

BOOM! Studios announces a new one-shot focused on The Man and Smackdown Live moving to the Fox network.

BOOM! Studios’ ongoing WWE comic may have been canceled, but the sports entertainment license lives on at the publisher. In their build-up to this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, the publisher announced a new one-shot, WWE Smackdown Live #1.

Written by Kevin Panetta with art by Kendall Goode, the comic will focus on Becky Lynch, a.k.a. The Man, arguably the WWE’s most popular superstar right now. It’ll also tie into Smackdown Live, currently seen Tuesday nights on USA, moving to the Fox network in October. Panetta is the writer of Bloom from First Second and Zodiac Starforce from Dark Horse, while Goode has work on previous WWE comics for BOOM!.

“The Man is one of the most electrifying Superstars to hit the ropes, and what better way to begin a new era of SmackDown Live than with Becky Lynch in the lead?” said Chris Rosa, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Current WWE Superstars collide with WWE Legends, who are all here for one of the biggest and most unpredictable nights that they’ll ever face in the ring.”

IDW to adapt ‘Cobra Kai’ into comics

Denton J. Tipton and Kagan McLeod will bring the YouTube Premium show to comics this fall.

You’ll be seeing more of Danny’s baby browns this fall, as IDW Publishing has announced a new miniseries featuring characters from The Karate Kid.

Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues will continue the story set up in the YouTube Premium program Cobra Kai, which is a continuation of the story set up in the original movies. Denton J. Tipton and Kagan McLeod are the creative team. Tipton is a group editor at IDW and has written their X-Files comics, while McLeod is an illustrator whose drawings have appeared in numerous publications; he also created the excellent graphic novel Infinite Kung fu.

“I saw The Karate Kid for the first time during a lock-in at the Y. The skeleton costumes captured my attention, while the Miyagi-isms pulled me into the story. And like everyone else at the time, I caught Karate Kid fever. Fast-forward 35 years, and being just a small part of the franchise has made me feel young and inspired all over again,” said Tipton.

‘Walking Dead’ surprisingly ends — on a positive note

Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard bring the series to a fitting end.

Wow.

As you might have heard, today’s issue of The Walking Dead, #193, is also the series finale. News broke earlier in the week about this surprise twist, which was confirmed by writer Robert Kirkman and Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson.

“I’ll say it again, I love (loved… oh, god, I’m not ready for past tense) writing this series. I really don’t want it to end. In fact, I’ve been… kind of unsettled since I wrote the script for this issue. The whole thing just feels… weird,” Kirkman said. “In a way, killing this series has been a lot like killing a major character. Much, much harder… but the same feeling. I don’t WANT to do it. I’d rather keep going… but the story is telling me what it wants and what it needs. This needs to happen. Whether I want it or not.”

‘Spell on Wheels’ returns at Dark Horse for a second ride

Kate Leth, Megan Levens, Marissa Louise and Rachel Deering return for another supernatural road trip.

Spell on Wheels, the 2016 miniseries by Kate Leth and Megan Levens, will return in October for a new miniseries — Spell on Wheels: Just to Get to You.

Leth and Levens are joined by colorist Marissa Louise and letterer Rachel Deering, as the three witches from the first series once again head out on a road trip for some supernatural shenanigans.

‘Giant Days: As Time Goes By’ wraps up the series

John Allison and Max Sarin will wrap up the long-running ‘Giant Days’ story with a double-sized special.

Graduation approaches for John Allison‘s long-running Giant Days series, and today BOOM! Studios announced Giant Days: As Time Goes By #1, which will conclude the series.

As announced back in April, Giant Days #55 will end the ongoing series, as the three main characters, Esther, Daisy and Susan, graduate from college. As Time Goes By will pick up 14 months later, as the three friends agree to reunite and catch up. Max Sarin will draw the special.

“This comic has always been about small moments and big catastrophes, so going out with a double-sized special gives me a chance to do plenty of both. It’s impossible to please everybody when you’re saying goodbye, but heaven knows, the Giant Days team are going to try,” said Allison.

‘Marvel #1000’ gets Star Wars, Conan, variant covers and a second issue

Look for Marvel’s big anniversary special in August.

Since announcing Marvel #1000, their big 80th anniversary special project with 80 creative teams telling one 80-page story, Marvel has released some additional details about the project. It’ll include some unexpected appearances in its pages, and not unexpectedly, a bunch of variant covers.

BOOM! opens the ‘Hellmouth’ in their first Buffy/Angel crossover

Five-issue miniseries featuring the Joss Whedon-created characters debuts in October.

BOOM! Studios will bring Joss Whedon’s power couple, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, together again for the first time in the pages of Hellmouth. The five-issue miniseries is about, naturally, the end of the world.

Jordie Bellaire, who writes the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, will team up with Jeremy Lambert of Doom Patrol and Goosebumps fame to write the series. They’re joined by artist Eleonora Carlini, who previous worked on BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics.

The crossover series features the latest renditions of the characters, who don’t have quite the history that they did in the TV show and Dark Horse line of comics. BOOM! rebooted the characters to a high school setting when they picked up the license, so this will be Buffy and Angel’s first meeting, as editor Jeanine Schaefer explains.

New ‘Locke & Key’ story to debut in San Diego

‘Locke & Key: Nailed It!’ gets a convention exclusive preview at next month’s Comic-Con International.

Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriquez’s Locke & Key came out as a series of miniseries between 2008 and 2013, wrapping up with the Omega and Alpha issues that brought the story to a close. Or so it would seem …

Both IDW Publishing and Rodriquez have teased this month plans to reopen the doors to the Keyhouse, and now a list of exclusives being offered by IDW at Comic-Con International next month reveals a new comic: Locke & Key: Nailed It!
