Hold on to your heads: Dark Horse announces ‘Headless Horseman Halloween Annual’

The anthology will come out in October, of course.

Dark Horse heads to Sleepy Hollow this October for Headless Horseman Halloween Annual, an anthology of “five terrifying tales to warm up your cold soul.”

“Doing a Halloween-themed anthology has always been a dream of mine, and we were able to assemble a fantastic crew of creators to help carry out that vision,” said editor Megan Walker. “The book is full of fun, creepy and iconic stories that will scare and delight readers. I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it!”

Tyler Crook’s ‘The Lonesome Hunters’ returns with a sequel in May

Howard and Lupe encounter a magical wolf in their next adventure.

Dark Horse Comics has announced that Tyler Crook’s excellent miniseries, The Lonesome Hunters, is getting a sequel later this year, subtitled “The Wolf Child.”

Crook wrote, drew and lettered the first miniseries, which introduced us to an elderly monster hunter named Howard and the young girl, Lupe, who he has to help defend from the Magpie Queen. This next miniseries sounds like it picks up right after the events of the first one.

“I’m super excited to be continuing the story of Howard and Lupe,” said Crook. “The Lonesome Hunters is the most personal and emotional story I’ve ever worked on, and the way readers have reacted to the story and connected to the characters has been amazing.”

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ are on the case in December

Pornsak Pichetshote and Jeff Stokely bring Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine back for new adventures.

One of the many beloved concepts to come out of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman were the Dead Boy Detectives, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, who debuted in Sandman #25 and won over our cold, dead hearts with their cold, dead bodies.

Now they’re coming back for a new series, The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives by writer Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian, Infidel) and artist Jeff Stokely (The Ludocrats).

“The genius of Sandman is how seamlessly it fits different genres, histories, and folklores together, something that definitely inspired Jeff and I for Dead Boy Detectives,” said Pichetshote. “As a Thai-American, I grew up around all this wonderful Thai folklore that’s never made it to American pop culture, so by introducing some of my favorite Neil Gaiman characters to the truly terrifying and bizarre world of Thai ghosts, we will give horror and Sandman fans something new.”

Lemire + Crook break the fourth wall in ‘The Unbelievable Unteens’

The Black Hammer miniseries will debut in August.

Jeff Lemire and Tyler Crook will reunite for another comic set in the Black Hammer universe, which Lemire co-created with artist Dean Ormston. The Unbelievable Unteens is described as a “meta team superhero saga” that will introduce a new superhero team.

The Unbelievable Unteens is a Black Hammer story that I have been working on for a few years and was just waiting for the right time and the right collaborator,” said Lemire. “After doing Colonel Weird with Tyler Crook I knew he would be perfect to bring the creepy and wonderful teenage super hero world of the Unteensto life. This series stands alone but will also tie back into the new Black Hammer: Reborn series in unexpected ways!”

Black Hammer: Reborn will debut in June and will feature Lucy Weber, the new Black Hammer.

Return to Bunn + Crook’s ‘Harrow County’ this July

Dark Horse will publish ‘Tales from Harrow County’ by Bunn and artist Emily Schnall this July.

Writer Cullen Bunn is planning return trip to Harrow County this summer, and he’s inviting you along for the ride.

Along with new artist Emily Schnall, Bunn will return to the world he created with Tyler Crook for a new four-issue series: Tales from Harrow County: Fair Folk.

“It’s been too long since we’ve visited Harrow,” Bunn said. “But I’m so glad that this is the story that will welcome us back! There’s a big world to be explored, and this time around we’re delving into the realm of the fey folk as much as the realm of the haints. We’re going to answer a few questions, too, such as how Bernice dealt with her dear friend Emmy leaving. This time out, we’re joined by Emily Schnall, who fits right in among the good folks of Harrow. I absolutely love her version of these characters, and I think longtime fans of the book will love her work, too!”

‘Harrow County’ returns in new story set during World War II

Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook are joined by artist Naomi Franquiz as they journey back to Harrow County.

Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook‘s Harrow County series may have wrapped up in 2018, but that doesn’t mean they’re done with the world they created. Tales from Harrow County: Death’s Choir, a miniseries that follows the events of the series, will kick off in December.

Written by Bunn and Crook, the miniseries will be drawn by Naomi Franquiz, who also provides the cover for the first issue:

comiXology adds seven titles to their ‘Originals’ line

New titles by Sam Humphries, Kel McDonald, Tyler Crook, Tim Seeley, Mike Norton and more join the growing line.

In June comiXology released four new titles as part of their comiXology Originals line, as they expanded the program to include creator-owned titles and a print-on-demand option. Today in San Diego, a dapper Chip Mosher, comiXology’s head of content, announced seven new titles coming to the line, four of which are available now.

“When we debuted the first wave of creator owned comiXology Original titles, we launched all five issues of the Superfreaks series in one day so readers could binge read the series at once. No one had ever done that before, and that’s just the tip of what we have planned,” said comiXology’s Head of Content Chip Mosher. “Today we are making history again with Goliath Girls, which is releasing simultaneously in English and Japanese. Going forward we’ll continue to push the envelope with new ways to connect with readers. It’s great to be able to offer the over 100 million Prime members worldwide the opportunity to experience these great books.”

The four book now available on their site include:

Cullen Bunn’s prose work collected in ‘A Passage in Black’

OmahaBound collects 27 ‘back-woods horror’ prose stories by Bunn, with illustrations by Tim Mayer.

When he’s not writing comics — and sometimes it’s hard to imagine that there’s a time when he’s not writing comics, based on all the projects he has going on — Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Harrow County) writes short stories, usually (and not surprisingly) in the horror genre. Now 27 of those stories are being collected by publisher OmahaBound.

A Passage in Black & Other Stories will include eight never-before published stories, along with 19 that were only released in the small press. Artist Tim Mayer will provide 23 illustrations for the collection, as well as the cover for the trade paperback version. Tyler Crook, Bunn’s collaborator on Harrow County, created the cover for the limited edition hardcover that will only be available on OmahaBound’s site. The publisher describes the stories as “back-woods horror, creepy and terrifying tales that only Cullen Bunn could tell.”

The collection is due out Oct. 6. Check out the two covers below.
