Dan Watters + Andrea Broccardo’s ‘Spider-Woman’ ongoing spins out of her 50th anniversary special

Jessica Drew teams with Ben Ulrich to take on hidden threats in New York in the new series, which kicks off in November.

Marvel will follow September’s Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special with a new series featuring Jessica Drew that takes her back to her roots as a private investigator.

Dan Watters and Andrea Broccardo will have Spider-Woman team with journalist Ben Ulrich to undercover hidden threats in the seedier parts of the Marvel universe. The new status quo will debut in the special, followed by Spider-Woman #1 in November.

“I’m over the moon that Andrea and I are continuing the story of the mysterious Spider-Woman we start in the Anniversary special,” Watters said. “Investigating leads too dangerous for the Daily Bugle’s journalists, Jess will uncover some of the strangest crimes in New York City. And in a town like this? That’s saying a lot.”

Marvel celebrates 50 years of Spider-Woman in September

Ann Nocenti, Dan Watters and more contribute to the one-shot.

Jessica Drew is the latest Marvel character to hit a big anniversary — almost 50 years, having debuted in Marvel Spotlight #32 — and to celebrate, Marvel is dedicating a one-shot to the character with stories by Dan Watters, Andrea Broccardo, Ann Nocenti and more.

Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 will arrive in September and brings Nocenti back to a character she has some history with. In the 1980s, Nocenti wrote the final four issues of Spider-Woman’s ongoing series, not only ending the original series with issue #50 but also killing Jessica Drew off in that final issue. But you can’t keep a good hero down, so she was resurrected in the pages of Avengers a short time later.

“In the 1980s editor Mark Gruenwald gave me the assignment to ‘retire’ Spider-Woman, ending the book’s run with issue #50, so returning to write a story about how Jess’s friendships and battles are hard won feels redemptive,” she said. “Added bonus—with art by the spectacular Stefano Raffaele, the story will be gorgeous!”

Nocenti will team with Raffaele for a detective story set in L.A. that features the Flying Tiger.

Hulk leaps into a ‘Giant-Size’ special issue next April

Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Andrea Broccardo will introduce a new threat named Patchwork Jack in the oversized issue.

Marvel’s giant-sized celebration of the anniversary of their Giant-Size line goes Hulk-sized next April, as Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Andrea Broccardo team up for Giant-Size Incredible Hulk.

Johnson, the writer of the ongoing Incredible Hulk series, has been bringing his A-game to the title, introducing and re-introducing all sorts of monsters for the Jade Giant to fight. In this oversized issue, the Hulk will encounter a new threat named Patchwork Jack.

“The North Star I’ve been following on Incredible Hulk is to make EVERY ISSUE a horror and action showcase for the rockstar artists I’ve been so fortunate to work with,” Johnson told Marvel.com. “I’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure readers don’t miss out on a single page of this book’s potential: new lore, new monsters, fan-favorite guest appearances from across the Marvel U, the most jaw-dropping fights imaginable, the gnarliest transformations Hulk has ever experienced… I want this to be a run that readers never forget. Antarctica by Simon Birks and Willi Roberts, the Top Cow miniseries that debuted in July, will continue as an ongoing series after issue #5.

Marvel announces a new ‘Alien’ title by Shalvey and Broccardo

The xenomorphs return in April.

Marvel has announced that Declan Shalvey (Moon Knight, Time Before Time) and Andrea Broccardo (Doctor Strange/Punisher: Magic Bullets, Doctor Aphra) will create the next Alien series. It kicks off in April and features a new cast taking on the xenomorphs on an icy moon.

“It’s incredibly exciting to take on such a brilliant franchise …the potential for great stories is limitless,” Shalvey said. “I feel like the themes from the films remain quite relevant to today, which makes me feel like we’re able to tell contemporary stories set in that iconic universe. I’m very much hoping to channel the mood and atmosphere of those films while doing something new and Andrea has done an incredible job of putting the reader in that recognizable world. With this new series, I think we have a really interesting addition to the lore of Alien.”
