Barbara Friedlander, Sam Glanzman will receive the 2023 Bill Finger Award

The awards will be presented at Comic-Con International next month during the Eisner Award ceremony.

Comic-Con International has announced that Barbara Friedlander and Sam Glanzman will receive the 2023 Bill Finger Award. The award recognizes creators who made lasting contributions to comics that went largely “unsung,” as Bill Finger’s contributions to the creation of Batman and related characters went unsung for several decades.

“Once again, we’re excited to honor two folks who wrote great comic books that perhaps didn’t receive the attention and recognition that their work deserved,” said Mark Evanier, who oversees the awards program. “Readers who only know from fictional superheroes should be aware of the excellent writing that has sometimes been found in comics about real-world romance and real-world war— two areas represented well by this year’s recipients.”

The winners will be announced Sept. 7, and the nominees for their biggest award, the Reuben itself, should be announced soon.

The awards recognize the artist or cartoonist, so you’ll see work, the writer or publisher aren’t called out in the nominations. For comic books, the nominees include Brett Bean, artist of I Hate Fairyland; Ben Bender, creator of The Littlest Viking; and Robert Goodin, creator of The Kurdles.

Webcomics creators are recognized in two categories — long form and short form. In the long-form category, the nominees include Phil Foglio, Brad Guigar and Sheldon creator Dave Kellett. In the short-form category, Sarah Andersen, Tex creator Jesse Atwell and Rich Powell have been nominated.

Emily Carrington’s ‘Our Little Secret’ wins the 2023 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize

Kate Beaton’s ‘Ducks’ was named an ‘honor book’ by the awards program.

Our Little Secret, Emily Carrington’s account of her abuse by a neighbor as a child and her attempts as an adult to find justice and peace, has won the 2021 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize. Drawn and Quarterly published the graphic novel in March of 2022.

The award comes with a $2,500 prize, and the winner is chosen by a panel of judges.

“In this graphic memoir, Emily Carrington takes readers through her traumatic story of childhood abuse. While the novel begins with a warning, it only partially prepares the reader for the powerful narrative and emotional rollercoaster that they are about to be taken on,” the judges said. “Throughout the journey, Carrington expertly uses the graphic novel format to set the tone and pace the narrative. The story is clear and engaging and invites readers to witness the author’s futile quest for redress through the courts. This cultivates empathy and performs a kind of grassroots justice without sacrificing literary and artistic excellence. Carrington’s visuals are confident and original. She uses metaphor beautifully, and seamlessly weaves surrealist threads throughout the narrative. ‘Our Little Secret’ is fluid, utterly engaging, and evokes empathy and compels action.”

‘Chivalry,’ ‘The Night Eaters’ nominated in the Locus Awards

The annual awards will be given out in June.

The nominees for the 2023 Locus Awards have been announced by Locus Magazine. While they don’t have a dedicated comics or graphic novel category like a lot of science fiction literary awards do these days, they do have an “Illustrated and Art Book” category where a few graphic novels have popped up.

It makes for some strange bedfellows for sure, as a handful of graphic novels will compete against an illustrated version of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and art books by science fiction artists, including a project collecting the artwork of Rowena that was spearheaded by comic artist Kim DeMulder.

But it’s nice to see comics sneaking their way into the awards, and who knows — maybe they’ll add a graphic novel category someday.

The graphic novels nominated in the category include:
