She-Hulk is ‘Sensational’ again beginning in October

Rainbow Rowell and Andrés Genolet will reboot the adventures of Jennifer Walters with a new first issue.

Marvel will relaunch She-Hulk in October as Sensational She-Hulk. Rainbow Rowell and Andrés Genolet will continue to tell Jennifer Walters’ adventures in the new series.

Rowell said the title is, of course, an ode to the original Sensational She-Hulk title from the 1980s/1990s.

“That word makes me think of the original Sensational She-Hulk from artist/writer John Byrne,” Rowell told Marvel.com. “It’s a vibe, really: gorgeous art, gorgeous Jen, jokes, a feeling that anything can happen, and a focus on a Jen as a person, a woman. We were definitely inspired by that run in our previous issues, and we’re leaning in even more with the new book. I want it to feel really smooth and buoyant, an ongoing celebration of Jen as a character.”

‘Hack/Slash’ returns in October in a new miniseries by Zoe Thorogood

Cassie Hack is back in a new miniseries written by the Eisner Award-nominated creator.

Zoe Thorogood, who is not only a nominee for this year’s Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award but also a multiple Eisner Award nominee, will next turn her pencil to Cassie Hack, the monster hunter created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli.

Hack/Slash will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, so it’s a good time to bring in one of comic’s most promising newcomers to offer a fresh take. Image Comics will kick off the four-issue miniseries Hack/Slash: Back to School in October.

Here’s a look inside ‘Marvel’s Voices: X-Men’

The anthology features new comics by Al Ewing, Greg Pak, Daniel Bayliss, Jorge Corona and more.

Marvel will release another of their Marvel’s Voices anthologies in August, this time focusing in on the X-Men.

The anthology series, which sprang from a podcast on Marvel.com with the same name, has been published since 2020 and has spotlighted “diverse storytellers and their journeys,” as well as characters from diverse backgrounds. This year Marvel’s Voices began spotlighting specific character groups, like the Spider-Verse characters and the citizens of Wakanda, in stories by diverse creators.

And this time around, they’ve recruited a very diverse group to create stories about one of their most diverse character groups. Here’s a look at what you can expect to find in the anthology when it arrives Aug. 16.

It’s Alien vs. Alien in October’s ‘Alien Annual’

This fall the Xenomorphs are going to war — with each other.

A subspecies of Xenomorphs recently introduced in the ongoing Alien title, awoken from its frozen sleep, will battle its own kind in a story in Alien Annual #1 by Declan Shalvey and Danny Earls.

“Writing Alien has been a fantastic experience so far, digging into the desolate horror the franchise allows on the ‘Thaw’ storyline with a diehard collaborator like Andrea Broccardo,” Shalvey told Marvel.com. “With this upcoming annual, I get to expand on the world we’ve built with a ferocious battle of monsters by the excellent Danny Earls, whose stark shadows and organic shapes are perfect for a series like this. I promise that no humans will survive this tale.”

Marvel celebrates the 10th anniversary of ‘Superior Spider-Man’ in a one-shot this October

Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman and more will reveal an untold ‘Superior’ tale.

It was 10 years ago that Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman kicked off one of the most controversial — and eventually acclaimed — runs on Spider-Man with Superior Spider-Man, which saw the dying Doctor Octopus switch his mind, Freaky Friday style, with Peter Parker.

Now Slott, Stegman and a host of artists will pay tribute to that anniversary in Superior Spider-Man Returns, a one-shot coming in October.

“The challenge Marvel gave me was: for the 10th anniversary, how can we revisit Superior, without repeating ourselves, and while telling a story that impacts Spider-Man’s world today?” Slott said. “Superior Spider-Man Returns is going to take an untold Superior tale, and drag it kicking, screaming, and violently exploding into the present. It’s going to give you everything you liked about Superior but in new surprising ways. No time travel. No clones. And no way we’re telling you how. Read the book!”

BOOM!’s ‘Ranger Academy’ will launch in October

Maria Ingrande Mora, Jo Mi-Gyeong and Fabiana Mascolo present the story of a very special school.

Following a preview on this year’s Free Comic Book Day, BOOM! Studios has announced that Ranger Academy, a new Power Rangers title set at a school that trains them, will launch in October.

Novelist Maria Ingrande Mora, who wrote Fragile Remedy and The Immeasurable Depth of You, will team with artist Jo Mi-Gyeong (EVE, Beastlands) and colorist Fabiana Mascolo on the series. I’m not even a big Power Rangers fan, but you put “Academy” next to a word, and I’m in.

“It’s such an honor to introduce Sage and her friends to a new generation of Power Rangers fans,” Mora said. “Jo is a dream to collaborate with, and her love for these characters is clear in every panel and expression. Welcome to Ranger Academy!”

Douek + Cormack hit the throttle on ‘Drive Like Hell’ at Dark Horse

The new miniseries kicks into overdrive in October.

Rich Douek and Alex Cormack, who powered through Sea of Sorrows, Breath of Shadows and Road of Bones at IDW, are taking a different road with their next project. Dark Horse Comics will publish Drive Like Hell, a new four-issue miniseries from the duo, beginning in October.

Letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou rounds out the creative team. Dark Horse describes it as a “fast-paced action-adventure that goes full throttle into hellscape horror,” as a pair of thieves’ escape plan from the perfect heist involves getting away in a car owned by the devil.

“When I started writing Drive Like Hell, I had one rule,” Douek said. “If I had an idea that seemed too crazy, too extreme, or too outrageous, I had to go ahead and do it. The result is a story that I hope is as fun to read as it was to write.”

Captain Ginger takes flight once more in ‘The Last Feeder’

Stuart Moore and June Brigman return to the stars for another tale of evolved cats in space.

Although its existence was revealed in May when Ahoy Comics announced Project: Cryptid, they made it official this week that writer Stuart Moore and artist June Brigman will reunite for Captain Ginger: The Last Feeder .

The two-issue miniseries is part of Ahoy’s celebration of their fifth anniversary, and follows the two previous Captain Ginger series. If you aren’t familiar with Captain Ginger, it’s kind of like Star Trek, but with cats. Evolved cats at that.

“I’d rather write Captain Ginger than anything else in the world, so I’m grateful to AHOY for giving us the chance to continue our story,” said Moore. “This time, we decided to tell a self-contained, Strange New Worlds-type adventure that, at the same time, tackles some of the biggest questions in the Captain’s universe. All his life, Ginger has wondered about his father, and all the evolved cats have wondered about the long-dead humans who created them. Now the answers are in their grasp—maybe.”

Marvel will enter the ‘Crypt of Shadows’ again this year

Al Ewing, Paul Davidson, Declan Shalvey, Alex Lins and more will tell haunting tales about Daredevil, Man-Thing, Deadpool and more.

For the second year, Marvel is once again opening the doors to the Crypt of Shadows, showcasing creepy stories starring their characters by Al Ewing, Cavan Scott, Declan Shalvey, Sarah Gailey and more.

Crypt of Shadows was originally a 1970s reprint title of older Marvel material, but Marvel dug it up last year to spotlight new horror stories. This year’s anthology will feature stories starring Scarlet Witch, Deadpool, Daredevil, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night and Hulk, among others. Victor Strange, Doctor Strange’s brother, will once again serve as “host.”

Mad Cave will unleash ‘Edenfrost’ in November

The new historical fantasy by Amit Tishler and Bruno Frenda is set in the Ukraine during the Russian Civil War.

Mad Cave Studios has announced plans to publish Edenfrost, an historical fiction/fantasy series written by Amit Tishler with art and colors by Bruno Frenda and letters by Taylor Esposito this fall.

“Edenfrost is a deeply personal and pertinent story, born from an amalgamation of my own philosophies, interests, family history and artistic passions,” Tishler said. “I wanted to create an epic journey that’s exciting and entertaining, but also delivers a nuanced and insightful message about the concept of identity.”

Marvel announces the death of Moon Knight

Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio pull the final curtain on Moon Knight — at least until Marvel decides to bring him back.

Following in the footsteps of Doctor Strange, Ms. Marvel and, well, just about every other character they have, Marvel has announced that Moon Knight will be the next character to die in their comics in a story by Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio.

It’s hard not to be cynical about comic book deaths, particularly when it comes to Marvel. They not only mourned Ms. Marvel last week in the pages of Fall Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel, but turned around a few days later to announce her return. The X-Men and their resurrection protocols have pretty much ruined the impact of any comic book deaths these days, right?

And while I’m a big fan of MacKay’s work in general and on Moon Knight in particular, this story comes on the heels of a similar one featuring Doctor Strange. But still, big fan, so I’ll be curious to see how this one plays out and trust that the execution will be well handled (no pun intended … well, maybe a little).

Smash Pages Q&A | Adam Cesare and David Stoll on ‘Dead Mall’

The two creators discuss their love for malls, their approach to ‘mall horror,’ the potential for a sequel and more.

Horror novelist Adam Cesare‘s signature novel has a title that contains the two scariest words in the English language, Clown in a Cornfield, so right from the get-go you know that he gets horror. He’s also been adding comics to his resume over the last few years, having worked on Power Rangers comics, Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and more.

David Stoll, meanwhile, was the artist for Pantomime, a Mad Cave title with writer Christopher Sebela from a few years back. The story featured students at a school for the deaf who become thieves, and I still remember how clever the visuals were in communicating what was being said and heard by the deaf characters.

The two of them more recently united on Dead Mall, a four-issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. Along with letterer Justin Birch, they told a complete story that combined horror and mall culture. The story takes place in — and is narrated by — the Penn Mills Galleria, a former mall that’s about to be demolished when a group of kids decide to visit it one last time. Only they find it isn’t quite so empty.

The miniseries was recently collected into a trade paperback by Dark Horse Comics, and it’s available now in comic shops and bookstores everywhere. I spoke with Both Cesare and Stoll about the story, abandoned malls and more.
