Larry Hama’s ‘G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero’ will continue at Skybound

Chris Mooneyham joins Hama on the series, which will pick up with issue #301 in November.

When Skybound announced they will work with Hasbro on a new universe featuring Transformers and G.I. Joe, many fans wondered what that meant for Larry Hama, whose name has been synonymous with the G.I. Joe comics since the 1980s. Today Skybound confirmed something Hama had already mentioned on social media — that they will continue to publish G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, and will even keep the legacy numbering.

“Several years ago, a fan at SDCC asked me how long Larry Hama would be writing G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comics,” said Michael Kelly, VP of Global Publishing at Hasbro. “My response was the only appropriate answer for someone in my position: ‘for as long as Larry wants to keep writing them.’ It’s exciting to be continuing this journey that started back in 1982, and I’m grateful to the great team at Skybound for helping me keep that promise.” 

Hama will be joined by artist Chris Mooneyham and colorist Francesco Segala, with G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #301 coming to shops in November. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was originally published by Marvel in 1982 and then revived by IDW in 2010.

“I am delighted to be continuing the saga of G.I. Joe with the good folks at Skybound and totally amped to be taking the G.I. Joe team to issue #301 and beyond,” said Hama. “Little did I know back in 1982 that I would be associated with the Real American Hero for over 40 years. My thanks to the whole crew at Skybound for allowing me to continue to chronicle the exploits of characters who have become like a family to me.”

Marvel will collect its ‘Rom: Spaceknight’ run for the first time

An omnibus of the first 29 issues will arrive next January.

Now this is interesting — Marvel has announced, in collaboration with Hasbro, plans to collect their early 1980s series Rom: Spaceknight in a series of omnibus volumes.

Rom: The Original Years Omnibus Volume 1, coming next January, will collect Rom #1-29, as well as Power Man and Iron Fist #73. Marvel is also planning to reprint the first issue as a “facsimile edition” in September.

Godzilla meets the Power Rangers in March

IDW and BOOM! Studios bring the two licensed properties together for a titanic meet’n’greet.

IDW has announced Godzilla Vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a crossover miniseries featuring Toho International, Inc.’s monstrous celebrity and Hasbro’s morphin’ superheroes, whose comics are published by BOOM! Studios.

That’s a lot of legal departments to get sign-off from, so props to IDW for making it happen. The miniseries will be written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by Freddie Williams II.

“I am honored to bring two iconic franchises like Godzilla and the Power Rangers together. I’ve been a massive Godzilla fan since before I could read, and my love for the King of Monsters has never faded in all those years. Likewise, I’ve always loved Tokusatsu superheroics, and vividly remember watching the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when it came out. This is a crossover that I suspect will take readers by surprise—but it makes complete sense!” Bunn said. “Writing for these characters is a dream come true for this giant monster-loving kid-at-heart, and when readers pick up this book, I want them to feel that sense of awe and wonder that these characters have inspired for decades!”

BOOM! + IDW team up for a Power Rangers + Ninja Turtles crossover

Ryan Parrott and Simone di Meo will team up on a five-issue miniseries starring both properties in December.

Two licensed comics will punch, kick and stab their way into a five-issue crossover miniseries this winter. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brings together two of the biggest 1990s afternoon TV icons — and two popular comics franchises currently published, respectively, by BOOM! Studios and IDW Publishing.

Writer Ryan Parrott and artist Simone di Meo will bring the two properties together. Both have worked on BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics in the past. Dan Mora drew the cover for the first issue.

“Honestly, I’m pretty certain keeping this project a secret has taken years off my life. These two iconic franchises were my TV parents, each teaching me valuable life lessons thirty minutes at a time. The Power Rangers and the Ninja Turtles are too insanely awesome not to bring together. I mean, they’re both color-coded teenage martial artists who fight monsters! It just makes too much sense!” Parrott said. “A huge thank you to Hasbro and Nickelodeon for letting me play with so many of their wonderful toys, as it is truly an honor to be a part of such an exciting crossover. I’m the luckiest kid in the world, and I cannot wait for you all to see what we’ve been putting together.”

Liefeld readies his kung fu grip for ‘Snake Eyes: Deadgame’

The Deadpool creator’s new G.I. Joe series arrives in 2020.

After wrapping Major X for Marvel, Rob Liefeld will turn his attention next to a “bucket list” item of his, the G.I. Joe character Snake Eyes. IDW Publishing announced today that the Deadpool and Youngblood creator will tackle his first G.I. Joe story in 2020, titled Snake Eyes: Deadgame.

“Two words: ‘BUCKET LIST,’” Liefeld said in the press release. “One more word: ‘ICON.’ Snake Eyes is Wolverine, Deadpool and Spider Man rolled into one amazing character for an entire generation of fans that thrilled to his adventures in comics and cartoons and hung on his every toy release! My parents drove me all over the county to get me G.I. Joe action figures as a kid. These were my first and most favorite toys. Working with Hasbro and all my friends at IDW has been a blast so far. I can’t wait to get this work out into the public! If you enjoyed my recent Marvel work, this will match or exceed it!”

IDW and Hasbro bring ‘Clue’ to comics

Paul Allor and Nelson Dániel team for an “at times completely bonkers” five-issue miniseries based on the board game.

IDW’s partnership with Hasbro has brought everything from My Little Pony to Transformers to ROM and Micronauts to the publisher, and now that line of books is getting a Clue. A five-issue miniseries based on the iconic board game will debut in June.
