Preview | ‘Mezo: Battle At Coban Rock’ #1

The new miniseries by Tyler Chin-Tanner, Val Rodrigues, Gab Contreras and Varga Tomi debuts in May.

Courtesy of the fine folks at A Wave Blue World, we’re pleased to present a preview of their new title, Mezo: Battle at Coban Rock, which kicks off in May.

The five-issue miniseries by writer Tyler Chin-Tanner, with artwork by Val Rodrigues, Gab Contreras and Varga Tomi, continues the story set up in Mezo: Rise of the Tzalekuhl. Though Mezo has some “show-stopping magical moments,” at its heart it’s a gripping wartime adventure filled with political intrigue and old-world combat, as the daughter of a fallen chief tries to form new alliances to turn the tides against the rising Tzalekuhl empire.

Below, you can check out the cover by Rodrigues, the variant cover by Terry Blas and five pages from the first issue.

Smash Pages Q&A: Terry Blas on ‘Lifetime Passes’

The writer and artist discusses his new graphic novel ‘Lifetime Passes’ from the Surely imprint at Abrams Books.

Terry Blas has been writing and drawing comics for years. A member of Helioscope Studio, he’s written graphic novels like Hotel Dare and Dead Weight, and made the webcomic Briar Hollow.

His new book Lifetime Passes, which he made with Claudia Aguirre, is the debut book from the Surely imprint at Abrams Books. Curated by Mark Tamaki, the imprint publishes LGBTQIA+ stories by LGBTQIA+ creators, and this book feels very much of a piece with Blas’ other work, while also being deeper and powerful in really interesting ways. It’s a darkly comedic premise that is thoughtful and moving and in Jackie, the main character, Blas and Aguirre have created one of the great teenage characters in comics.

Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades will feature stories by established and new Latinx comics creators, telling stories about Latinx characters.

“Marvel Voices is such a unique project that I feel really drills down on the core Marvel tenet of reflecting the world outside your window–so when the opportunity came to help put together Marvel Voices: Comunidades and celebrate the Latinx community, I couldn’t have been more excited,” co-editor Lauren Amaro said. “And that excitement only continues to grow as story pitches continue to roll in–trust me, you’re not going to want to miss out on what this talented group of creators have got cooking up!”

Reptil roars in a new series from Marvel this May

The ‘Avengers Academy’ student breaks out into his own miniseries.

As revealed in their May 2021 solicitations, Marvel will put the spotlight on the shape-changing Reptil in a new miniseries by Terry Blas and Enid Balám.

The character first appeared in the pages of Avengers Initiative by Christos Gage and Steve Uy, and went on to appear in Avengers Academy and Avengers Arena. But his breakout moment likely came from his appearances on Marvel’s animated Super Hero Squad Show.

“I’m so excited to be making my Marvel debut with such a fun and complex young character,” Blas said. “He’s Mexican-American, like me, and I’m delighted to bring a story with more of that representation to Marvel. Also, he can turn into dinosaurs and isn’t that every kid’s dream?”
