Mat Johnson + Steve Lieber explore family secrets + time travel in ‘Backflash’

The new graphic novel will debut from Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint this fall.

Mat Johnson, writer of Incognegro and its sequel, Incognegro: Renaissance, is working with Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen artist Steve Lieber on a new graphic novel that offers “a delightfully strange and fresh take on time travel.” Backflash, which will be published by Dark Horse Comics’ Berger Books imprint, is scheduled to come out this fall.

They’re joined by colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Clem Robins on the project, which is being edited by Karen Berger. She previously worked with Johnson when she was at Vertigo on the first Incognegro book, as well as Dark Rain: A New Orleans Story, Right State and a Hellblazer special. She also edited the five-issue Incognegro: Renaissance since coming to Dark Horse.

According to the news release, Backflash tells the story of Devin whose life is “spiraling out of control, until he discovers the impossible: with a random touch of an article of family memorabilia, he can travel back in time, mentally reliving the best moments of his past while escaping his problems of the present.” But it comes with consequences, as he discovers a family secret he was never supposed to find out.

Three Count | Steve Lieber, ‘Griz Grobus,’ newts

Here are three things to know, to read and to support today.

Three Count is a new column that spotlights, as the title suggests, three things from comics today. It’ll be three things with links, no more, no less. This is the second one, and a big bwahahaha to everyone who thought I’d only ever do one of them.

1. To Know: Steve Lieber’s alt.text skills are unparalleled

Earlier today DC revealed that the Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen? team of Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn and Clayton Cowles have reunited for a new story featuring Perry White as part of a one-shot that’s coming out next month.

While you can visit my original post from today to see what the final cover will look like, Lieber took to Twitter to show off an alternative cover he had created for the issue:

‘Perry White’ one-shot will include a new story by ‘Jimmy Olsen’ team

The award-winning team of Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn and Clayton Cowles reunite for a new story about Jimmy Olsen’s boss.

DC has announced a new one-shot, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White #1, which will not only come out next month (Great Caesar’s Ghost! That’s fast!) but will also include a new seven-page story from the team behind the award-winning Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen: Who Killed Jimmy Olsen? maxi-series.

Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Nathan Fairbairn and Clayton Cowles will have a story in the anthology, which will also include reprints of stories by Elliot S. Maggin and Curt Swan, Neil Kleid and Dean Haspiel, and Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis.

It really is Miracle Monday, isn’t it?

Russell + Lieber serve up the ‘One-Star Squadron’ in December

The new title features DC characters trying to make a living as superheroes.

Red Tornado, Power Girl, Plastic Man and several other B-list DC heroes will team up to make a buck while saving the world in One-Star Squadron.

Mark Russell, Steve Lieber and Dave Stewart will bring together a “ragtag group of heroes,” led by Red Tornado, who use an app to answer the call for justice — or attend your kid’s birthday party, for a fee.

“One of the things I love about this project is that [Mark Russell] and I get to imagine what it would be like to live from gig to gig, entirely at the mercy of distant corporations and their mercurial customer base,” Lieber said on Instagram.

DC announces ‘Superman: Red & Blue’ anthology miniseries

The series will feature stories told in red and blue.

If Batman has his Black & White series, then naturally Superman would get a “red & Blue” one. DC announced this week Superman: Red & Blue, an anthology miniseries featuring the Man of Steel told in shades of red and blue (or magenta and cyan, to be specific).

The first issue will include a Clark Kent story by John Ridley, whose name is all over DC lately, with artist Clayton Henry. Brandon Easton and Steve Lieber will have a “street level” story set in Metropolis.

Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen get solo titles in July

Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins tell a “hard boiled” Lois story, while Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber tackle Superman’s best pal.

DC Comics will publish two maxi-series this summer starring well-known Superman supporting characters — Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

As confirmed by the LA Times and DC’s July solicitations, Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins are teaming up on a “hardboiled” Lois Lane. “Lois Lane is the best investigative reporter in the DC [Universe],” Rucka told the Times. “This is our truth, and this is what the book is about.”

Jimmy Olsen, meanwhile, gets a “more fun and light and optimistic” series from Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber.

New miniseries expands the world of ‘Lazarus’

Greg Rucka and Michael Lark’s Image series enlists Eric Trautmann, Steve Lieber and more to explore different corners of the ‘Lazarus’ universe.

Greg Rucka and Michael Lark have recruited several writers and artists for a new six-issue miniseries set in the world of their popular Lazarus comic from Image. Lazarus: X+66 will feature six different stories that look into “neglected” corners of the world they’ve been building.

“Part of the joy of writing Lazarus for me is exploring and defining different aspects of the world, and in particular the characters who inhabit it,” Rucka said in a press release. “Following the events of ‘Cull,’ and gearing up for the inevitable trauma that will be ‘Fracture,’ this was the ideal time and place to look into some of the corners of our universe that had been, for one reason or another, neglected, while at the same time buttressing and expanding on the overall ‘main story’ that Michael and I are telling. Every one of these stories is important in the larger narrative, and getting to provide a laser focus on them is simply something that we can’t do in the confines of the pages of the monthly.”
