Mail Call | ‘X-Men: Inferno’ teasers say ‘Trust No One’

Check out news, announcements and previews from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image and more.

Mail Call is a roundup of the announcements we’ve received from comics publishers in our mailboxes recently that we haven’t already covered. Hit the links for more information.

Marvel has released three teasers for X-Men: Inferno, the upcoming X-Men crossover event that shares a name with a 1989 X-Men crossover event (not to be confused with The Trial of Magneto, another X-Men event that kicks off in August and also shares a name with a 1980s X-Men storyline.)

The teasers all build on the concept of trust, suggesting that you pretty much can’t trust anyone on Krakoa these days:

“An homage to the original house ads for 1989’s milestone X-Men crossover Inferno, Silva’s artwork presents all the major players of the upcoming saga and teases the day of reckoning that will soon be upon them,” Marvel.com says about the teasers. Inferno is written by Jonathan Hickman with artwork by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva and Stefano Caselli.

“I’m very excited that we’re finally getting to share with everyone the follow-up to House of X/Powers of X,” Hickman said. “The story is 160 pages over four issues drawn exquisitely by Valerio Schiti, R.B. Silva and Stefano Caselli. I cannot wait for people to read it.”

Inferno #1 arrives Sept. 29.

Jock writes + draws ‘One Dark Knight’

Jock, whose signature style has graced the pages of The Batman Who Laughs, Batman: The Black Mirror and Snow Angels, not to mention countless covers, is writing and drawing a Batman miniseries for DC’s Black Label imprint.

Batman: One Dark Knight is a three issue, prestige format miniseries that debuts in December. In it, Batman has to escort a criminal across town during a blackout.

“I think most readers know how much I love drawing Batman, so I was thrilled by the prospect of marrying the visual take with my own storyline for Batman: One Dark Knight,” said Jock. “I wanted to tell a propulsive, tight action tale, set over one typical night in Gotham City; except when a blackout strikes it’s a night that goes very, very wrong for Batman. I can’t wait to share more with everyone soon!”

Remender + Araújo will quench ‘A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance’ this fall

Rick Remender, André Araújo, Chris O’Halloran and Rus Wooton will team up for A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance, a new series about a man who becomes a traget when he tries to save a man from a dark-web contract assassin.

“After years of wanting to work with André I couldn’t be more excited to get this into the world,” Remender told ScreenRant. “It’s a decompressed atmosphere story unlike anything we’ve ever done before and the exact type of methodical crime book I’ve always wanted to do.”

Look for the first issue in October.

Mister Miracle: The Great Escape arrives in January

Varian Johnson and Daniel Isles will share their spin on Mister Miracle in the upcoming YA graphic novel Mister Miracle: The Great Escape, which arrives from DC on Jan. 18.

Here’s the description: Desperate to leave Apokolips, an oppressive world ruled by Lord Darkseid, Scott’s great escape will take nothing short of a miracle as no one has ever left the planet on their own free will. A student at the Goodness Academy, Scott brews up a foolproof plan to escape to planet Earth—all while struggling to understand his identity, PTSD from growing up in the fire pits of Apokolips, and somehow falling in love with his number one enemy, Big Barda, who has made keeping Scott on Apokolips her number one priority.

Iron Man, Blade take on the Darkhold

Marvel has announced two of the books from their upcoming Darkhold event series, which features the infamous mystical tome causing problems for the Marvel Universe, but Doctor Doom and Scarlet Witch in particular. Following the “Alpha” issue in September will be a series of one-shots featuring different characters “recruited to combat the Darkhold’s horrifying effects,” starting with Blade and Iron Man.

Darkhold: Blade is by Daniel Kibblesmith and Federico Sabbatini, and it features the famed vampire hunter reading from the notorious text, which changes history to make him king of the vampires.

Darkhold: Iron Man is by Ryan North and Guillermo Sanna, and when he reads the Darkhold it changes his life completely, causing him to be trapped in his armor.

Here are some preview pages from the Alpha issue, along with some character concept art for Blade:

The orville returns at dark Horse

Dark Horse Comics has announced a new miniseries based on the FOX TV show The Orville. The Orville: Artifacts is a two-issue miniseries by David A. Goodman, David Cabeza and Michael Atiyeh, and it starts Oct. 20.

Here’s the description: When Ed bumps into his old astroarchaeology teacher, the professor asks for assistance in his pursuit of the lost fleet of the Zankon, whose systems-spanning empire rose and fell millions of years ago, according to legend. However, doing so means taking the Orville into a system so hazardous no ship has ever successfully navigated it. Will the fearless survive the treacherous journey? And at what cost?

By the Horns upgraded to an ongoing series

By the Horns, the unicorn-themed fantasy miniseries by Markisan Naso, Jason Muhr and Andrei Tabacaru, has been upgraded to an ongoing series.

“As we worked on the book, we really fell more and more in love with the world, texting each other ideas for new creatures, new characters, new locales and new adventures, so the continuation and expansion of our story seemed like a no-brainer,” Muhr said. “There’s so much more of Elodie and company’s story we want to share with everyone. We’re very grateful to the fans, the retailers and Scout for their support.”
