Sable + Haun unbox ‘Boxed’ for Comixology Originals

The graphic novel will take over your devices next month.

Mark Sable and Jeremy Haun have both been responsible for some pretty interesting stories, so it’s great to see them combine forces on Boxed, a new graphic novel coming next month from Comixology originals.

Boxed is about a (not so) distant future where AI is widespread and sometimes breaks bad, so the FBI has an anti-AI division that “boxes” up rogue AI when needed. The story features colors by Nick Filardi and letters by Thomas Mauer.

“Much of Boxed is inspired by my work with military and intelligence agencies as a futurist for the Atlantic Council,” said Sable. “Artificial Intelligence software is shaking up our times, from Chat GPT to Midjourney to Open AI, these entities are becoming more immersed in our everyday reality not only replacing what humans can do, but blurring the line between human and machine intelligence and the capabilities are not to be underestimated.”

Meet some ‘Nice Jewish Boys’ by Neil Kleid + John Broglia + Ellie Wright

The five-issue miniseries will debut on Comixology in November.

Neil Kleid has never shied away from writing about his faith, in books like Brownsville and The Big Kahn. This fall he teams again with artist John Broglia, who he worked with on Savor, for a new series from Comixology Originals called Nice Jewish Boys.

Rejoining them are colorist Ellie Wright and editor Sarah Litt for a story about “a modern day Jewish crime drama set in suburban New Jersey.”

“Nice Jewish Boys is about a modern Orthodox / religious Jewish community and communities like it — somewhat insular, judgmental and pious, maybe a tad hypocritical to the point of criminal,” Kleid said. “And like all good stories, it’s about the author. It’s about my fears and anxieties and what it might be like to succumb to frustration with a beloved system that can also be restrictive and expensive…and, in many cases, unjust and unfair to certain people who love what it offers in terms of faith, community and an elusive connection to something far greater than ourselves if only it would put aside the entitlement, judgment, and unwillingness to change.”

‘The All-Nighter’ returns for a final season this Halloween

Chip Zdarsky and Jason Loo reopen the diner for one more night and one more fight.

Chip Zdarsky and Jason Loo’s The All-Nighter will return for a third and final season later this month, as the Comixology Originals series wraps up its run.

The vampires-turned-superheroes will face off with The Takers as they search for their missing friend, finally living up to the dream of being heroes.

“I’m incredibly excited to bring our vampire family adventure to its epic conclusion!” Zdarsky said. “We’ve taken them from flipping burgers to fighting crime, and I can’t wait to show everyone what’s next!”

Zdarskya nd Loo are joined by colorist Paris Alleyne, letterer Frank Cvetkovic and editor Allison O’Toole for The All-Nighter Season 3, which will be released monthly by Comixology Originals. Issue #11 debuts on Oct. 31.

‘Martine Moon’ debuts on Panel Syndicate

Darko Macan and Goran Sudžuka’s new comic is about a ‘beautiful, bold and only slightly bitchy’ socialite who battles ‘aliens, gods, terrorists and scum from every corner of history.’

Darko Macan and Goran Sudžuka’s Martine Moon is now available on Panel Syndicate. Like everything else on the site, the first issue is available as a pay-what-you-want digital download.

The site’s co-founder, Marcos Martín, shared more about the new series in their newsletter:

Martine Moon is an action adventure story in the tradition of the newspaper strips of old and presented in a similar widescreen, black-and-white format. In the words of their own creators: 

“Beautiful, bold and only slightly bitchy, Martine Moon would like nothing better than to enjoy each new day, champagne and shrimp cocktails, but aliens, gods, terrorists and scum from every corner of history keep showing up and making her life impossible.”

Hoffman + Bobillo team on ‘Wag’ for Comixology Originals

Am I hearing my voice in my head, or someone else’s?

Scott Hoffman, aka Babydaddy of the multi-platinum selling rock/disco/glam/pop band Scissor Sisters, will team with artist Juan Bobillo and letterer Steve Wands, on Wag, a new five-issue miniseries coming from Comixology Originals in September.

This is Hoffman’s second work for Amazon’s imprint, following Nostalgia. This new story is set after the apocalypse, when a character named Wag starts hearing voices in his head.

“I think the pandemic got most of us considering the possibility of our post-apocalyptic fears becoming a reality,” said Hoffman. “This dystopian anxiety felt especially poignant to me in a time when global connectedness/national fracturing, conspiracy theories, continuing breakthroughs in neuroscience/neural implanting/our understanding of consciousness and the whiplash caused by runaway advances in AI leave most of us with more questions than answers about how to navigate our frantically changing world.”

Three new titles written by Curt Pires will debut on Comixology next week

‘Money,’ ‘Simulation. Theory’ and a second season of ‘Lost Falls’ will arrive next Tuesday.

Curt Pires’ relationship with Comixology Originals will continue to bear fruit next week, as the prolific writer has three new titles that will debut on the digital comics platform on July 18.

Pires’ run with Comixology started back in 2020 with the release of Youth, which has since been collected by Dark Horse and is being developed by Amazon for their streaming service. Since then we’ve seen a second season of Youth, as well as three other series — Memoria, New American and Lost Falls. That third one’s second season debuts next week, along with two new comics:

  • Money, a “white-knuckle conspiracy thriller that follows five powerful families.” Money is illustrated by Luca Casalanguida, with colors by Mark Dale and lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
  • Simulation. Theory, a “sci-fi thrill ride into a simulated reality where one can live a new life.” Simulation. Theory is illustrated by Darryl Knickrehm, with colors by Mark Dale and lettering by Micah Myers.
  • Lost Falls Season 2, which features art by Pierluigi Minotti, colors by Emilio Lecce and lettering by Micah Myers. The “mind-bending season of the socially minded mystery thriller” follows the recent release of Dark Horse’s print publication of Lost Falls Volume 1.

“I’m excited to be debuting Money, Simulation Theory and Lost Falls S2 with my world class collaborators on these projects and my friends at Comixology,” said Pires. “These books run the gamut subject and genre-wise and tackle some of the most prescient topics of the day. I think there’s something for everyone in these three books and am delighted by the accessibility that Kindle Unlimited and Comixology Unlimited provide in making them widely available.”

Snyder + Albuquerque reunite for the post-apocalyptic ‘Duck and Cover’

The new title debuts on Comixology next week.

The American Vampire creative team of Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque will sink their teeth into 1950s Cold-War era insanity in Duck and Cover, a new title debuting from Comixology Originals next week.

The title refers to the civil defense drills common in the 1950s, where kids would practice hiding under their desks in case nuclear war broke out. In the comic, schools desks end up being the only real protection from nuclear bombs that obliterate the United States, leaving the country in the hands of its children.

“Duck and Cover is a character driven thrill-ride that blends elements of manga, 1950’s Americana, and post-apocalyptic lore to create something truly unique,” Snyder said in the press release.

Scott Bryan Wilson + Al Barrionuevo unleash an ‘Angry Ape Army’ next week

The digital comic will debut on Zestworld, Comixology and GlobalComix.

Technology and magic will clash on a world inhabited by apes in Angry Ape Army, a new digital comic coming from EEP Universe, the production house behind House of Slay, as well as Zumeta Studios and XRM Media.

Writer Scott Bryan Wilson and artist Al Barrionuevo, who worked together on Savage Tales, will bring this world to the comics page.

The story revolves around a tribe of peaceful apes on a planet called Genesis World, where they have lived under the thumb of the more advanced Nano Apes for generations. The Nano Apes strip-mine the Genesis Apes’ natural magic for fuel, and their culture has been eradicated. Then a secret warrior tribe arrives just in time to start an uprising.

“Angry Ape Army is a high-octane sci-fi adventure full of twists and turns and heroes you love to love and villains you love to hate. It’s breathless, character-driven action in a world where the nearly forgotten ancient forces of magic are needed to ward off a seemingly unstoppable technological threat. Al Barrionuevo and I are thrilled to team up again to bring this story, world, and characters to life,” Wilson said.

X-Men news: Uncanny Avengers, Hellfire Gala, Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Marvel announces details on several new projects coming straight out of Krakoa.

The Unity Squad will return in a new title later this year as a part of the Fall of X event, Marvel revealed yesterday during a virtual event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the X-Men.

Uncanny Avengers will return to store shelves starting in August by the team of Gerry Duggan and Javier Garron. But before that they’ll appear in a story in Marvel’s Avengers/X-Men Free Comic Book Day title coming in May, and the need for their return will be revealed in July’s X-Men: Hellfire Gala one-shot, which kicks off the Fall of X storyline.

“Everything we’ve been working towards in our third act is coming to a head this summer,” Duggan said. “The Uncanny Avengers have existed to provide an example of unity between humanity and mutantdom, and they will need to work extra hard at that now as relationships and friendships have frayed in the events of Fall of X.”

GlobalComix adds several new publishers as they prepare to launch an app

BOOM!, Image, Archie and more will soon join the digital comics service.

The web-based digital comics platform GlobalComix has announced publishing agreements with several new publishers, including Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Tokyopop and Archie Comics, as they prepare to launch their first mobile app.

“I have waited for this moment for years,” said Christopher Carter, CEO of GlobalComix. “Not only are we finally about to change the landscape of digital comics publishing entirely, but we are also fortunate enough to do it together with a vibrant community of creators from both popular web and indie comics; and also many of the most venerable and well respected publishers in the entire world [of comics]. We will be bringing more comics to even more readers, worldwide, and doing so in a fiscally accessible way. With this, we’re paving the way for a vibrant and thriving ecosystem in which creators and publishers can make a sustainable living, doing exactly what they love, and that is one of the major reasons for why we’re doing what we do.”

It’s time for ghost-punching in Gunter + Andan’s ‘Grammaton Punch’

The digital title will debut on Comixology March 14.

Comixology Originals has announced Grammaton Punch, a new five-issue miniseries by writer Miles Gunter, artist Briane Andan, colorist Lee Loughridge, and letterer Taylor Esposito, which will debut on the platform on March 14.

Gunter, whose credits include BPRD, Terminator and Weird War Tales, said the new title is a twist on the “classic ghost story,” mixed with his love for video games. It’s about a teenager who can see and fight the ghosts that prey on his classmates.

“In Grammaton Punch, Van Nguyen was born during a solar eclipse and while that might sound cool, it’s not,” Gunter said. “That’s because eclipse babies are born with something extra and, for Van Nguyen, that means he can see ghosts.”

And he doesn’t just see them — he also punches them.

Bendis’ ‘Fortune and Glory: The Musical’ debuts on Substack

Brian Michael Bendis returns to autobiographical comics to talk about that time he was asked to work on ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.’

Brian Michael Bendis has kicked off the long-awaited sequel to Fortune and Glory this week on his Substack.

Bendis wrote and drew the original Fortune and Glory, which was published as a three-issue miniseries by Oni Press in 1999-2000. Dark Horse plans to release a new printing of the collected series in April.

“Fortune and Glory was a graphic novel I did years ago, pre-Marvel, about my first adventures in Hollywood as a young independent comic book creator,” he wrote. “It was one of the books that got me where I am. I always wanted to do a sequel. Many of you have asked for one over the years. I loved doing an autobiographical comic book. I always thought I would do another one, or a bunch of them, but Spider-Man kept getting in the way.”
