Fiona Staples, ‘Where We Live’ take home multiple Ringo Awards

Annual awards ceremony recognizes ‘the creativity, skill and fun of comics.’

The third annual Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, a.k.a. The Ringo Awards, were presented last night at the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007, the awards celebrate “the creativity, skill and fun of comics.”

Fiona Staples, Sean Phillips and Image’s Where We Live anthology were the big winners of the night, each earning two Ringos. Brian K. Vaughan took home the award for best writer, while Phillips was named best artist.

Two Hero Initiative awards were presented as well. Congratulations to all the winners; the complete list is below.

Dark Horse unleashes ‘The Butcher of Paris’ in December

Stephanie Phillips and Dean Kotz bring a WW2 true-crime thriller to comics.

Marcel André Henri Félix Petiot may not be as well known as other serial killers, but the Butcher of Paris will soon get the spotlight in a new series from Dark Horse Comics.

Writer Stephanie Phillips, artist Dean Kotz, colorist Jason Wordie and letterer Troy Peteri will team for The Butcher of Paris, a new limited series about the infamous murderer who plagued France during World War 2. Dave Johnson will supply the covers.

“When I learned about Petiot, I knew the story needed to be told,” Phillips told Women Write About Comics.” You can read details about the case online, but there is something I think we miss when we are simply reading facts about Petiot. This is a story about a serial killer hunting in a city occupied by Nazis—one of the darkest periods in French history (really, world history writ large). This case is about so much more than a serial killer, and I think that’s why it stood out to me. I just kept coming back to it.”

DC announces line-up for milestone ‘Wonder Woman’ #750

Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Joëlle Jones and more contribute to the Amazon’s anniversary celebration.

Wonder Woman’s 750th issue arrives in January, and DC has revealed an all-star line-up of talent to help her celebrate.

The 96-page issue will include contributions from popular Woman Woman scribes Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, as well as Vita Ayala, Marguerite Bennett, Jeff Loveness, Kami Garcia, Shannon and Dean Hale, Mariko Tamaki  and current Wonder Woman writer Steve Orlando.

Davis + Renaud bring the Avengers + Defenders together for ‘Tarot’

New miniseries promises madness and mayhem as they face the Infernal Ichor of Ish’lzog.

Marvel has announced that legendary artist Alan Davis will write a new Avengers/Defenders miniseries called Tarot. He’ll team with French comics artist Paul Renaud.

“Tarot is my new project for Marvel that has just been announced,” Renaud wrote on Tumblr. “It is a very clever story Alan Davis wrote for me to draw. Join us for this epic Avengers/Defenders team-up…and you can expect the rest of the whole Marvel Universe to show up as well!!”

Smash Pages Q&A: Joe Corallo

The comics writer and editor discusses his latest anthology ‘Dead Beats,’ the miniseries ‘She Said Destroy’ and more.

Joe Corallo is a comics writer and editor, who some might know for his journalism on the website ComicMix.com. He co-edited the award-winning anthology Mine! and this year saw the release of She Said Destroy, an ambitious miniseries made with artist Liana Kangas that comes out in trade next month.

This week, Dead Beats, the anthology he co-edited with Eric Palicki, arrives in stores from A Wave Blue World. A horror anthology centered around music, the book has an incredible lineup of talent including Vita Ayala, Eva Cabrera, Cameron DeOrdio, Jen Hickman, Kwanza Osajyefo and Nadia Shammas. It also features a story written by Rachel Pollack, drawn by Richard Case and lettered by John Workman, reuniting years after their acclaimed run on Doom Patrol.

To mark a year with an anthology and a series that feature the best work he’s done so far in his career, I wanted to ask Corallo about the two projects, building teams and what he’s thinking about next.

Hawkeye faces a new Ronin in January

Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt launch a new series focused on Marvel’s original Hawkeye.

Clint Barton will return to action as Hawkeye in a new solo title next year that’ll pit him against a new version of Ronin — one of his previous aliases.

10 thoughts on interviewing cartoonists

Alex Dueben reflects on recent comments from writer Kieron Gillen and others about interviewing and comics journalism.

Last Wednesday, Kieron Gillen made a few statements on Twitter, going after people conducting email interviews.

While I agree with what he said in general and responded that there is a place for such questions, I also hesitate to avoid making such broad statements. Just like with “rules” about writing comics, they don’t NEED to be followed, but one should have a good reason when they are not following them. I am aware that Gillen would likely agree with me on that point.

Fantagraphics announces ‘The Cloven’ by Stein + Southworth

The author of ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ teams up with the artist of ‘Stumptown’ for a three-volume graphic novel series.

Earlier this week Fantagraphics announced a new three-volume graphic novel series from Garth Stein, the author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, and Stumptown artist Matthew Southworth.

The Cloven features a half-man, half-goat hybrid created in a lab who tries to live a normal life, but, you know … he’s got hooves.

“I am having so much fun working on The Cloven with my partner, Matthew Southworth; I can think of no better home for our series than Fantagraphics, a publisher with an impeccable reputation for quality stories and world-class artwork,” Stein said. “This is truly a match made in heaven.  Or in Seattle.  Any connection between ‘heaven’ and ‘Seattle’ is entirely your own…”

Marvel plans to reboot ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Darth Vader’

New first issues will deliver the force in 2020.

Marvel plans to reboot Star Wars and Darth Vader in 2020, as the comics move into the post-Empire Strikes Back era.

Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz will chronicle this “dark time” for the Rebels, as they plot their course in a Han Solo-less world.

Smash Pages Q&A: Monica Gallagher

The writer and artist discusses her webcomic ‘Assassin Roommate,’ collaborating on ‘The Black Ghost’ and much more.

Monica Gallagher has been writing and drawing print and web comics for years. People might know her for work like Gods and Undergrads, Bonnie N. Collide, Lipstick & Malice, Part-Time Princesses, Glitter Kissor many other projects. The past year thought has been a particularly busy and productive one for Gallagher, who has been writing and drawing multiple projects.

She’s been making the weekly webcomic Assassin Roommate; drew the weekly webcomic Boo! It’s Sex, which was written by Danielle Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots); co-wrote the podcast Lethal Lit; and has co-written the new comics miniseries The Black Ghost with Alex Segura, which is being released by comiXology Originals. The first issue is out now and the second issue comes out Oct. 16.

Additionally Gallagher is running a Kickstarter campaign to collect the first year’s work of Assassin Roommate. We spoke recently about her many projects.

Music meets the apocalypse in Milligan + Hervas’ ‘Tomorrow’

New title due from Berger Books in February.

The deluxe edition of Enigma wasn’t the only Peter Milligan news Dark Horse revealed at the New York Comic Con — they also announced that Milligan, Jesús Hervas, and James Devlin are working together on a new miniseries titled Tomorrow for their Berger Books imprint.

“It’s so great to be working with Peter Milligan again! He’s simply one of the best, and his new thriller Tomorrow shows why he continues to be one of comics’ most original, provocative, and passionate writers,” said Berger. “Jesús Hervas’s illustrative and expressive art is perfect for this frightening tale that could very well be our future.”

‘Iron Man 2020’ is coming, of course, in 2020

Dan Slott, Christos Gage and Pete Woods bring Iron Man into the (very near) future.

Over the weekend at the New York Comic Con, Marvel announced that Dan Slott, Christos Gage and Pete Woods are working on the next iteration of Iron Man — Iron Man 2020, which spins out of Slott’s run on the character thus far.

Inside the Iron Man 2020 armor is Arno Stark, Tony Stark’s brother. He’ll be facing down with the Robot Rebellion, as artificial intelligence battles for robot rights.

“Like the inexorable turning of pages on a calendar, we’ve been building up to the arrival of 2020 and the advent of Arno Stark as Iron Man ever since this latest run began!” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Here, all of the larger themes we’ve been playing with will come to the fore in a big, sweeping, epic action movie that anyone can enjoy!”
