Jaxxon returns in a new Star Wars annual from Dark Horse

The limited release comic will only be available at select conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

It’s becoming tradition for Cavan Scott to write a new story every year starring Jaxxon, the green rabbit who first debuted many moons ago in Star Wars #8 by Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin. He was one of the first characters created outside of the movies themselves, and somehow has not shown up in a film or in his own Disney+ series yet. To which I ask, why???

Luckily, even after decades of inactivity, Jaxxon has returned in recent years thanks to Scott, who brought him back in the pages of Star Wars Adventures Annual in 2018, to be followed by additional stories and even an action figure since then. And this week brings more news about that wascally wabbit: he’ll appear in Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories Annual—Jaxxon 2023, which will only be available at conventions and directly from Dark Horse.

It’ll come in a variety of covers for different event; here’s the first one by Mike Mignola:

Smash Pages Q&A | Cavan Scott + Nick Brokenshire set sail for ‘Dead Seas’

The creative duo talks about their new title for IDW Originals, their influences and how to design the perfect ghost.

After working together on projects like the all-ages Star Wars: Return to Vader’s Castle title, Cavan Scott and Nick Brokenshire continue their partnership with Dead Seas, a six-issue miniseries that was announced earlier this year as part of the first wave of titles from IDW Publishing’s new Originals line.

Dead Seas merges horror, science fiction, action and corporate greed in a story about a convict-turned-reluctant-hero, who finds himself trapped with guards, pirates and his fellow convicts on a prison ship filled with ghosts. Scott and Brokenshire hit the familiar tropes from each genre while at the same time taking a unique approach to the subject matter, particularly regarding how the ghosts appear on our plane. If the rest of the series is as fun as the first issue, we’re all in for a treat.

The first issue arrives in stores Dec. 21, and Scott and Brokenshire were kind enough to answer a few questions about it.

Marvel, Lucasfilm announce two new ‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ titles

The new titles were announced during this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration.

Marvel and Lucasfilm have announced two new comics set during the Star Wars: The High Republic timeline that was first announced back in 2020.

The High Republic has, so far anyway, been a publishing initiative for Lucasfilm, spanning novels and comics, and telling the story of the Jedi Knights many decades before the Skywalker saga. It’s introduced several new characters, in addition to using a younger Yoda in the stories.

A second volume of the ongoing series Star Wars: The High Republic will be written by Cavan Scott and drawn by Ario Anindito, who worked on the first volume. In addition, Marvel will publish Star Wars: The High Republic – The Blade, a four issue miniseries by Charles Soule and Marco Castiello.

Dark Horse announces their first new Star Wars titles

‘Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories’ will kick off Dark Horse’s all-ages Star Wars line in August.

Dark Horse and Lucasfilm have announced the first two Star Wars comics projects coming from Dark Horse under the new licensing deal struck between the two companies late last year.

While Marvel continues with their line of comics aimed at older audiences, Dark Horse has picked up the license for “all-ages comics and graphic novels in partnership with Lucasfilm.” It’s a license that previously was held by IDW.

The new comics include Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories, an anthology featuring stories set in every era of the Star Wars timeline, and Star Wars: Tales from the Rancor Pit, a collection of “frighteningly fun” stories for Halloween.

Paging Scott + Ponce for Dark Horse’s ‘The Ward’

The new supernatural medical drama kicks off in June.

Cavan Scott and Andres Ponce will put a supernatural spin on the medical drama in The Ward, the story of a hospital and its staff that treat minotaurs, ghosts and more.

The four-issue miniseries kicks off in June from Dark Horse Comics.

“I’ve always been fascinated in ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the most incredible of situations, and that certainly describes the indomitable Nat Reeves as she plunges head first into a shift in the world’s only emergency room for supernatural entities,” Scott said. “From murderous minotaur to gelatinous cubes with severe cases of food poisoning, no two patients are alike at St. Lilith’s.”

Joining him will be artists Francesco Francavilla, Derek Charm, Megan Levens, Robert Hack, Chris Fenoglio and others, along with editor Heather Antos. Scott’s Star Wars bonafides run deep. Transformers head ‘Back to the Future’ in a new crossover miniseries

IDW will debut the first issue in October.

Great Scott! Marty and Doc Brown will meet the Transformers in an upcoming crossover miniseries from IDW Publishing.

“When I was asked to write the official crossover comic, I could only shout ‘Great Scott’ and dive in,” said writer Cavan Scott. “It’s the perfect fit. Both Transformers and Back to the Future are packed with adventure, humor, and (most importantly) heart. Plus, it gave me a chance to play with multiple Transformers timelines, harkening back to some of my favorite Transformers storylines of the ‘80s, while also bringing in elements of all three Back to the Future movies. Look out for classic characters, both human and Cybertronian, and a few surprises along the way!”

Comics Lowdown | BOOM! asks for CBLDF’s FCBD anthology to be destroyed

Plus: News on 2019 comics sales, Joe Sacco, Cavan Scott, Grant Morrison, Mexican horror comics and more.

Following the controversy that has come to light recently about the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and its former executive director, BOOM! Studios has asked for a Free Comic Book Day anthology they organized for the CBLDF to be destroyed, according to a report by Newsarama’s Chris Arrant.

A CBLDF Free Comic Book Day anthology has been assembled by numerous publishers over the years, and then published by the CBLDF for the annual event. This year’s event, of course, was cancelled in May due to the pandemic, but the comics are still being distributed to comic shops to be given out from July through September.

“In light of recent events surrounding the CBLDF, Boom! Studios asked that this year’s planned FCBD issue from the CBLDF not be distributed,” BOOM! told Newsarama. “Unfortunately, the issue was shipped out to retailers early in error (without being billed). We’ve requested the CBLDF and Diamond to ask retailers to destroy the copies they received, and a destruction notice should be sent to retailers shortly.”

CBLDF president Christina Merkler told the outlet that they respect BOOM!’s wishes and will leave it up to retailers whether they want to distribute the free comic.

The prequel to the upcoming Ubisoft video game starts in October.

Dark Horse Comics has announced a new miniseries that will serve as a prequel to the upcoming video game Assassin’s Creed: Vahalla. Subtitled “Song of Glory,” the creative team includes writer Cavan Scott, artist Martin Tunica and colorist Michael Atiyeh.

This will be the first Assassin’s Creed comic from Dark Horse, although they’ve published plenty of video game tie-ins before. Previously the license was held by Titan.
