Marvel announces ‘Wiccan: Witches’ Road’ for December

The miniseries will spin out of ‘Imperial’ and send the young mage on a quest to save his husband.

Marvel’s Imperial is the gift that keeps on giving. The miniseries that’s redefining Marvel’s cosmic characters — and spinning off many of them into their own series — will also give us a new Wiccan miniseries.

Wiccan: Witches Road is a five-issue miniseries by Wyatt Kennedy and Andy Pereira. And while Wiccan and Hulkling have been out in space since Hulkling became leader of the Kree/Skrull Alliance, this miniseries will bring Wiccan back to his mystical roots — which should please fans of the Disney+ series Agatha All Along.

“It’s a real thrill to be able to take Billy in such an unexpected direction and put him out of his element, introducing a new villain and a surprising ally that I know fans have been wanting to see,” Kennedy said. “Obviously getting the chance to write one of Marvel’s best couples is a joy, but I’m really excited to dive deep into who Billy is as a single individual and explore what his title as Wiccan really means to both himself and the greater Marvel universe.”

Phillip Kennedy Johnson + Nic Klein usher in a new age of monsters in ‘Infernal Hulk’ 

The next chapter in the horror saga begins in November.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein’s run on the Incredible Hulk may be ending, but they still have plans for the Jade Giant, the Eldest, the Mother of Horrors and the rest cast they’ve been building for the last two years.

Marvel will relaunch the title as Infernal Hulk in November, and they’ve revealed that Bruce Banner’s days as the Hulk are over — at least for now. Because something far worse is taking over the Hulk.

“I’ve been promising Hulk fans the biggest, boldest status quo change in Hulk’s history, and that time is finally here,” Johnson said. “The next few issues of Incredible Hulk give fans all the answers they’ve been waiting for about Eldest and the Mother of Horrors, and Infernal Hulk is the beginning of a terrifying new normal, not just for the Hulk series but for the entire Marvel Universe.”

Johnson, Klein and other artists like Daniel Earls, have returned the Hulk to his monster roots in Incredible Hulk, introducing even worse creatures than the Hulk. The story has centered on the Mother of Horrors and the Eldest, two horrific beings who have made the Hulk’s life hell — with plans to use his body to wage war on the rest of the Marvel Universe.

“There are monsters way worse and more powerful than anything we’ve seen so far, bigger and stronger than Hulk with origins that go back to the foundations of the Earth. It’s time to take this story to the next level, and no corner of the Marvel Universe will be left untouched before the end,” Johnson said.

Doctor Strange’s adventures in Asgard continue this winter

Derek Landy + Ivan Fiorelli will helm a new ‘Doctor Strange’ ongoing series in December.

Doctor Strange’s time in Asgard is just beginning. Following the One World Under Doom spinoff Doctor Strange of Asgard, the former sorcerer supreme of Earth will continue his Asgardian adventures in a new Doctor Strange ongoing series.

Doctor Strange of Asgard writer Derek Landy will write the series, joined by interior artist Ivan Fiorelli and fantasy artist Alex Horley on covers. The good doctor finds himself with a new role in Asgard — sorcerer supreme — but he’s also unable to return to Earth after recent events in Thor. Luckily Thor’s sister, Angela, is there to help him out.

“You might think that Stephen Strange is on firmer ground now that he’s become Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, but he’s about to be shoved face first into dangerous new territory, and his only guide is the baddest Angel of them all — Angela!” Landy shared. “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with Ivan and Dono [Sánchez-Almara] on continuing Strange’s adventures away from Midgard, and the fact that we also get to delve a little deeper into Angelic society on Heven, and how it interacts with the rest of the Ten (now Nine!) Realms, is a huge and unexpected bonus. In a determined effort to stay true to the origins of the character, the story we’re telling is only going to get bigger, crazier, and more mind-bending — and we’re inviting all of you along for the ride.”

Two animated heroes will team up again in ‘Batman/Static: Beyond’

Two Kids WB staples will return in a six-issue miniseries this fall.

Fans of Batman Beyond and Static Shock, get ready — the two heroes will come together once again in the DC Elseworlds miniseries Batman/Static: Beyond by Evan Narcisse and Nikolas Draper-Ivey.

The duo previously teamed up on the Static Shock animated series when Static went forward in time and ended up helping Terry McGinnis, the future Batman, save Static’s future self. They also appeared together most recently in the pages of the Milestone 30th Anniversary Special.

This story will take place in the future, showing us more of the adult version of Static, as well as Justice League Beyond.

“Static is a former teen hero who grew up to take on even more responsibility for his city and the larger world, while Terry is still figuring out how to do those things in his own way,” Narcisse said. “Terry’s still a high school student but he’s also got the weight of the Batman mantle and the expectations that come with it as key parts of his life now. As an adult member of the Justice League, Virgil’s at a different part of his journey. But he’s driven by an adolescence where systemic injustice changed what it meant to live in his hometown of Dakota. Their approaches to making the world a safer, more just place are extremely different. That difference energizes the big question they have to deal with: can they learn to work together during a critical moment when everything they’ve taken for granted has fallen apart? The whole creative team is going to try and answer that question in Batman/Static: Beyond with a story where deep emotions collide against the backdrop of an uncertain future.”

The Toxic Avenger meets the Justice Warriors in ‘Toxie Team-Up’ #5

Ahoy Comics’ Toxic Summer has put the spotlight on the Toxic Avenger, with multiple titles like Toxic Crusaders and the Toxic Avenger Pin-Up Special arriving to support the re-emergence of the cult classic character into the pop culture sphere.

One of the more interesting titles has been Toxie Team-Up, a take on the classic team-up title that has featured Troma’s best boy meeting characters from other Ahoy titles, like the Jersey Devil from Project: Cryptid, Dragonflyman and even Jesus Christ from Second Coming. And in October, Toxic Avenger writer Matt Bors will have the chance to team up again with artist Ben Clarkson as they bring together the Toxic Avenger with Swamp Cop and Schitt, the breakout stars of the Justice Warriors.

Justice Warriors, if you aren’t familiar, started as a miniseries about two cops in the fictional series of Bubble City. It was followed last year by the graphic novel Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. Swamp Cop is a take off on the Creature from the Black Lagoon, while Schitt is, well … a living poop emoji. The satire poked fun at capitalism, law enforcement and “free” elections in a future of severe inequality — and one populated by mutants. Which makes them the perfect companions for someone like the Toxic Avenger.

Marvel’s 2099 era faces the music in ‘The End 2099’

Heroes from different realities fight for their survival in the new miniseries by Steve Orlando and Ibraim Roberson.

As the 2099 era faces its end, a new era, Marvel 3099, makes its debut.

Steve Orlando and Ibraim Roberson will team up again for another 2099-themed miniseries, the ominous-sounding The End 2099, which Marvel bills as revealing the final fate of the 2099 universe. They also say it will feature the debut of a new era, 3099, with Spider-Man 3099 making an appearance.

Oh, and a Galactus fused with Knull, now called Abyssus, is aiming to bring the end of everything.

“Every time the door to 2099 opens, it’s not just an honor–it’s an adventure!” Orlando said. “This is the one for it all, folks. With all existing 2099 timelines united into the one, true, Universe-2099, the stakes are higher than ever when Abyssus, the Devourer in Black, comes to dinner! But not all is as it seems! 2000AD celebrates 45 years of Judge Death in October

Dave Taylor, Lauren Beukes, Leigh Gallagher, Alex de Campi and more will contribute stories about the four Dark Judges.

Judge Dredd’s most notorious foe will take the spotlight in October as 2000AD presents The Judge Death Mega-Special, which marks 45 years of stories featuring Judge Death.

Created by John Wagner and Brian Bolland, Judge Death leads the Dark Judges, and each story in the anthology will feature one of these four judges as they “wreck havoc across the universe.”

SDCC | ‘Ultimate Endgame’ begins in December as ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ ends

Details were shared at the San Diego Comic-Con this week.

Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s final issue of Ultimate Spider-Man will arrive in December, just as the Maker returns in Ultimate Endgame.

Hickman attended the Marvel Comics: Ultimate Universe Panel at San Diego Comic-Con today, sharing that the story he and Checchetto have been telling was always meant to end with issue #24.

“This was everything that I pitched,” Hickman said. “Nothing has deviated. It’s been really nice to execute the plan well and everything culminates into this issue. Fans of the Ultimate Universe are going to love it. It’s been a real pleasure being the writer of Ultimate Spider-Man.”

It was almost two years ago that fans were introduced to the Ultimate Universe version of Spider-Man — an older Peter Parker married to Mary Jane and father to two kids who had never been Spider-Man. As the maker tried to supress the hero community, Tony Stark had found a way to bring them back, and one of the first heroes he contacted was Peter Parker.

From the DC All In Panel earlier this week came news of a tie-in title for the big DC K.O. event that DC announced last week — and it involves a whole lot of fighting and a whole lot of Robins.

According to reports from the panel, Knightfight by Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora “explores Batman’s worst nightmare: what if the Robins all became Batmen in twisted alternate futures?”

SDCC | Marvel’s ‘Deadpool/Batman’ will feature a Frank Miller story

Al Ewing and Dike Ruan also join the line-up with a Rocket Raccoon/Green Lantern story.

It’s 1982, and Frank Miller is drawing Wolverine. It’s 1987, and Frank Miller is writing Batman. It’s 2025, and Frank Miller is writing and drawing Wolverine and Batman.

Marvel announced in San Diego this week that the recent Eisner winner is, indeed, writing and drawing a story for the upcoming Deadpool/Batman one-shot that will feature Wolverine — the Old Man Logan version — and the Batman as seen in Miller’s classic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. He also drew a variant cover featuring both characters:

SDCC | Marvel teases the end of ‘One World Under Doom’ — and what will follow

Ryan North and RB Silva present the big finale in November.

All good things must come to an end, even the benevolent rule of the one true Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom.

The One World Under Doom, Marvel’s big crossover event and miniseries, will come to a head in issue #9 in November, and in San Diego this week writer Ryan North teased what that issue will bring.

“The story is in two parts,” North said. “[In the second part], you’re kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, because there’s no way he’s doing what he’s doing without any consequences. So in the second half, you see what’s going on behind the scenes.

“There is some stuff coming up that I’m very excited for,” he continued. “I know issue nine is the conclusion, but issue eight has some big stuff that I’m very excited about.”

SDCC | Matt Kindt + Ibrahim Moustafa bring John Le Carré’s Circus to comics

The three-issue miniseries begins in November.

Writer Matt Kindt and artist Ibrahim Moustafa will team up to bring the world from John le Carré’s novels into comics. The three-issue John Le Carré: The Circus—Losing Control will begin in November.

Le Carré is the author of many best-selling espionage novels, including The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which have been adapted to film. Several of his books are connected and feature a British intelligence agency nicknamed the Circus, which is overseen by a man known only as “Control.” His right hand is a man named Smiley, and his left hand, as seen in the comic, is his executive assistant, Maggie. When Control goes missing, it’s up to Maggie to find him — while keeping the world on track.

“Getting asked to contribute a piece to John le Carré’s world of Smiley has been one of the greatest honors and responsibilities of my life,” said Kindt. “I wasn’t looking for this job but I was called into service. And much like Smiley, my heart is in the right place and hopefully that will be enough.”
