Bunn + Piazzalunga’s over-the-top horror romp lands next year

‘Monsters Are My Business (And Business is Bloody)’ will debut from Dark Horse in April.

Dark Horse this week announced a new miniseries from horror mastermind Cullen Bunn and Happy Horror Days artist Patrick Piazzalunga. Monsters Are My Business (And Business is Bloody) is described as “an over the top, colorful, vibrant world of horrors,” and features colors by Marco Brakko and letters by Jim Campbell.

“Some time ago, Patrick and I were discussing working together on a new creator-owned title,” said Bunn. “He sent me some concept sketches of this big, burly biker type and a chainsaw-wielding, cigar-smoking koala bear. From there, we discussed building a story of elder gods, mutant cults, mercenary necromancers, and a lot of bloody good violence. Monsters Are My Business was born! I am just in awe of Patrick’s ability to fuse horror and action and comedy so seamlessly. Readers are going to dig this book!”

Cullen Bunn’s ‘Deepest Catacombs’ returns to the web

The Dungeons & Dragons-inspired webcomic picks up where the first story left off.

Cullen Bunn will return to the world of Deepest Catacombs for another round of Dungeons & Dragons-inspired webcomics. He plans to release an all-new 22-page comic in a serialized format via his Patreon, with subscribers getting early access to the strips.

The first one is up now, as is the entirety of the first Deepest Catacombs adventure. Each page is drawn by a different artist, and the project was inspired by those one-page comic-strip advertisements for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game that appeared in comics back in the 1980s.

“When I finished releasing the initial run of The Deepest Catacombs, I knew I would return to that world,” Bunn said. “I just loved the characters and the nostalgia, the magic and the monsters. And I loved working with so many talented artists! This was, of course, a labor of love, so it has taken me a bit of time to get the ball rolling again, but the story is going to be a ton of fun!”

Bunn + Hervás reunite for ‘Invasive’ from Oni Press

The medical horror miniseries will debut in December.

Cullen Bunn and Jesús Hervás, the creative team for The Empty Man: Manifestation, will team up again on Invasive, a new miniseries from Oni Press.

Invasive is a thing of nightmare. For me, literally,” said Bunn. “The initial seed of the idea sprang from a terrifying nightmare that startled me awake in the dark. While developing the idea, I was beset by even more nightmares. And while writing it? You guessed it. Nightmares. It’s a book that worries and haunts me, and I think it represents a bit of a signpost in the road of my approach to horror in general. I believe that in the years to come, it will be thought of as one of my most disturbing stories.”

Smash Pages Q&A | Cullen Bunn + Brian Hurtt on the return of ‘The Sixth Gun’

The creators of the horror/Western ‘yarn’ talk about returning to their signature creation with a new Kickstarter project.

The 50-issue The Sixth Gun series — along with its several spin-off series — was a hallmark of independent comics publishing from 2010 to 2016. Co-creators Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt not only created a compelling “yarn” of a story that combined horror with the Western genre, but they also did a phenomenal job of creating a world that always seemed ripe for more exploration.

They wrapped up the initial story of Becky Montcrief, Arnold Drake and the battle for control of six mystical guns, and now Oni Press has announced The Sixth Gun Deluxe Omnibus Library, which is currently up on Kickstarter. Not only are they releasing all the issues of The Sixth Gun, plus all the spinoff miniseries, plus the spinoff series Shadow Roads, in this deluxe format, but Bunn and Hurtt are also creating new material for it — three new prelude stories will unlock as the campaign reaches new milestones over the course of its 30-day run. It’s also a precursor to a new The Sixth Gun project coming in 2025 for the comic’s 15th anniversary.

I spoke with both creators about what it’s like to return to The Sixth Gun after all this time, their collaborative process and what to expect from the new material they’re creating.

Oni Press teases a new ‘The Sixth Gun’ project from Bunn + Hurtt

“Sometimes what’s dead doesn’t stay gone.”

Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s The Sixth Gun may have ended in 2016, but “Sometimes what’s dead doesn’t stay gone.”

A new teaser released by Oni Press today hints that a new The Sixth Gun project is on the way via Kickstarter. While the supernatural western had a definitive end, Bunn and Hurtt always hinted that they had more stories to tell, and even launched a second series, Shadow Roads, that was set in the same world.

Bunn + Luckert go ‘Beyond Mortal’ in a new graphic novel at Dark Horse

Superheroes battle the elder gods in the new project, which will arrive next January.

Cullen Bunn and Danny Luckert, who collaborated on the recent Shock Shop, will re-team for a new graphic novel from Dark Horse.

Beyond Mortal combines two things Bunn is famous for — super-heroes and horror, as a world protected by a pantheon of heroes must face it’s greatest challenge — an invasion by the elder gods.

“If you know me, you know I love superheroes,” said Bunn. “You also know I love-love-love horror. While I’ve frequently infused horror elements into my superhero comics, I’ve never done a full-on horror book in a superhero universe. Well, here you have it. Beyond Mortal is sort of a fever dream of heroics and terror. And I think fans of superheroes will love it. And so will horror fiends.”

Cullen Bunn returns to Marvel for ‘Death of the Venomverse’

The five-issue miniseries is one of many projects coming during the Summer of Symbiotes.

Cullen Bunn, writer of everything from Agent Venom to Drax to the X-Men, has been absent from Marvel for a number of years now, but that’s about to change. Marvel announced that Bunn will return — “maybe for the last time” — to write the upcoming Death of the Venomverse series with artist Gerardo Sandoval.

Marvel revealed the news along with a lot of other announcements related to their “Summer of Symbiotes” publishing initiative at this weekend’s C2E2 in Chicago.

In his newsletter, Bunn said the series involves Carnage embarking on a vicious bloodbath across all of reality, with a terrible agenda that would result in “death and destruction for all reality.” A group of Venoms from different universes team up to stop Carnage.

“The series was originally meant to be called Venomverse 2 or something, but I lobbied hard for Death of the Venomverse, and I’m not going to let that be an empty promise,” Bunn said.

Oni Press will publish Bunn + Susini’s ‘Lamentation’ beginning in May

The gothic horror story involves a disturbing play that begins to bleed into our reality.

Horror master Cullen Bunn will once again work with Oni Press on a new horror title — Lamentation, a “horror/gothic/giallo” story featuring artwork by Arjuna Sushini.

According to Bunn in his newsletter, “Lamentation reveals the story of the cast and crew of a theatrical production of ‘Razide’s Lament.’ This strange play seems to be bleeding into our reality… and no one can leave the theater until it has been performed for a group of mysterious critics. Madness and murder ensue.”

‘Ghostlore’ materializes from BOOM! in May

Cullen Bunn, Leomacs and Jason Wordie tell the ghost stories that ghosts tell each other in the new series.

Master of horror Cullen Bunn will team with artist Leomacs for a new series from BOOM! Studios, Ghostlore — which is about the ghost stories ghosts tell each other. They’ll be joined by colorist Jason Wordie on the new series, which kicks off in May.

Ghostlore is something of an ambitious concept,” Bunn said. “It started with a simple question I asked myself. ‘What ghost stories would ghosts tell?’ From there, though, it spun into this epic story of family, loss, grief, and—just possibly—the end of the world. It’s been in my head for a while, but I wanted to wait until the stars aligned, so to speak, to even give it a try. I’m lucky to be working with an artist as talented as Leomacs on the main story, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the cadre of amazing creators who will be illustrating the ghost stories in each and every issue. It all comes together in a book unlike anything else I’ve worked on.”
