Mail Call | DC announces ‘Milestones in History’ anthology

DC Comics and Milestone Media revealed more details about the anthology they plan to release this coming February during Black History Month, which was initially announced during DC FanDome last month.

Milestones in History will feature Hardware, Icon, Static and more narrating stories “Black trailblazers from across human history,” including Hannibal, the Queen of Sheba, Alexandre Dumas and more.

The 96-page prestige one-shot will cost $9.99 and arrives Feb. 15.

Synchronized swimming: Aquamen unite in a new series from DC

Jackson Hyde, Arthur Curry and the rest of the Aquaman family headline a new ongoing title by Chuck Brown, Brandon Thomas, Sami Basri and Adriano Lucas.

When Jackson Hyde took up the mantle of Aquaman in his new series, it begged the question, “So what’s going to happen to Arthur?” The answer: nothing; he’s still around, and in fact the old and new Aquaman will both star in the new title Aquamen.

Chuck Brown, Brandon Thomas, Sami Basri and Adriano Lucas will bring us new adventures of the underseas heroes, starting with a conspiracy involving an Atlantean suicide bomber in Middle America.

LSH’s Polar Boy returns in a festive frozen feature

For the first time since the Bendis reboot, classic Legionnaire reappears in DC’s holiday anthology ‘Tis the Season to be Freezin’.

Polar Boy is getting his own solo adventure and an updated look in DC’s 2021 holiday special ‘Tis the Season to be Freezin’ in a story called “Snow Date.”

Writer Richard Bernatovech and penciller Travis Mercer took to social media this weekend to give readers a sneak peak into the new Polar Boy. Mercer said in a tweet that his redesign is based on the esthetics already laid out by Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook, but also adding some Korean Pop fashion influences.

Smash Pages Q&A | Stephanie Williams on ‘Nubia and the Amazons’

The co-writer of the DC Comics miniseries talks about her approach to writing Nubia, the Well of Souls, her journey to becoming a comics writer and more.

Stephanie Williams has been writing about comics and making her own comics for several years, with her work appearing on NPR, the AV Club, Den of Geek and more. She’s also written Living Heroes, a fan comic/mash-up of the sitcom Living Single with Marvel characters, as well as the webcomics But What If Though and Parenthood Activate.

Earlier this year, Williams began working for DC, with her first story for them appearing in Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #2. This was soon followed by the announcement that she would co-write Nubia and the Amazons with Vita Ayala, who recommended her to the Wonder Woman editorial office. Featuring art by Alitha Martinez, the story focuses on the current queen of the Amazons and also introduces Bia, a Black trans woman who emerges from the Well of Souls.

I spoke with Williams about her work on the title, her approach to writing Nubia, the introduction of Bia and much more. Big thanks to Williams for taking the time to answer my questions.

Watch Wonder Woman’s induction into the Comic-Con Museum Character Hall of Fame

Marie Javins, Becky Cloonan, Liam Sharp and many other comics creators talk about Wonder Woman’s impact on pop culture and the world.

The Comic-Con Museum today inducted Wonder Woman into their Character Hall of Fame, following in the footsteps of Batman and Pac-Man.

The occasion was marked with a video on the Comic-Con Museum’s YouTube channel that featured appearances by Marie Javins, Liam Sharp, Nicola Scott, Trina Robbins, Phil Jimenez, Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Gal Gadot, Helen Mirren, Lynda Carter, Patty Jenkins, the Teen Titans and many more.

Comics Lowdown | DC FanDome triples its viewership

Plus: New graphic novels from the Mayo Clinic, the Andrew Carnegie Awards and more!

Viewership for last weekend’s DC FanDome tripled this year to 66 million views worldwide, according to DC. The event was available in multiple languages in more than 220 countries.

“With triple the fan traffic of last year, DC FanDome 2021 exceeded all of our expectations,” said Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks, in a press release about the event. “We continue to innovate across the company in service of our fans, and I cannot overstate the creativity and hard work that went into this highly curated, global digital event. We gave fans what they wanted – the very best of all things DC – and their engagement and response have been fantastic. We’re as excited as they are to deliver on all the great content DC FanDome highlighted.” 

It was also a popular topic on social media, with “DC FanDome” trending at No. 1 on Twitter for eight hours in the U.S. and in the top 50 in 53 countries around the world. In addition to new Batman trailers and gold boots for The CW’s Flash, FanDome also revealed several bits of comic news, including the return of Blood Syndicate, a Wonder Woman-centric crossover event and a new Monkey Prince series.

DC will hold another virtual event today at 4 p.m. Pacific as Wonder Woman is inducted into the Comic-Con Museum Character Hall of Fame.

Comics Lowdown | A look back at this weekend’s big comics events

Check out the news from both DC FanDome and NCS Fest, both of which had sessions you can still watch online.

This past weekend was filled with comics events of all shapes and sizes, from DC FanDome — which was about way more than comics, but they still had a strong presence — to the annual NCS Fest, which again went virtual and incorporated content from both the National Cartoonists Society and the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival in the UK.

In case you missed any of it, here’s the lowdown …

DC FanDome

This year’s FanDome was much shorter than last year’s, as DC opted for one day of livestreaming content rather than two. And it was better for it. The production was very tight, and I haven’t seen any issues raised about connection issues or the sorts of problems that can plague events like this.

DC + Milestone announce The Milestone Initiative

The new talent development program will provide nine weeks of training for new comic artists and writers.

Milestone Media and DC Comics have teamed up with Ally, an online financial services company, to launch the Milestone Initiative, a new program that’s meant “to identify, support and elevate emerging diverse writers and artists within the comic book industry.”

The program, which was announced yesterday during DC FanDome, will includes a week-long, in-person training seminar in DC’s Burbank, California offices next February. That will be followed by an eight-week virtual technical training course through the Kubert School. The initiative is actually part of a larger effort by DC to develop new talent called Next Generation DC.

DC announces ‘Trial of the Amazons’

The Wonder Woman-centric event brings conflict between the various tribes of the Amazons.

During today’s DC FanDome event, DC announced a “massive crossover event” featuring Wonder Woman and her family of titles, titled Trial of the Amazons for 2022.

The event will feature a power struggle between Amazon tribes, and will include Wonder Woman, Nubia, Yara Flor and Queen Hippolyta.

Yang + Chang bring the Monkey Prince back to comics next year

Gene Luen Yang and Bernard Chang reunite for a story featuring the character they introduced earlier this year.

Following his debut in the pages of DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration earlier this year, the Monkey Prince will leap into his own maxi-series next year from Gene Luen Yang, Bernard Chang and Sebastian Chen.

The shape-shifting superhero and his friends are inspired by the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, which is considered one of the “four classic novels” of Chinese literature.

The first issue will arrive on Feb. 1, which is Lunar New Year.

Superman will fight for ‘a better tomorrow’

Superman’s new motto drops ‘the American Way’ in favor of a phrase that ‘will better reflect global storylines.’

DC’s Jim Lee introduced an “evolved” motto for its most icon superhero during DC FanDome today.

The publisher and chief creative officer said Superman would now be fighting for “truth, justice and a better tomorrow,” a tweak to the “truth, justice and the American way” big blue has been fighting for for, well, ages.

DC + Milestone announce ‘Blood Syndicate,’ Black History Month anthology

During DC FanDome, Reggie Hudlin and Denys Cowan shared several updates on upcoming projects.

During DC FanDome today, Milestone Media’s Denys Cowan and Reggie Hudlin gave several updates on projects coming from the publisher.

Fans who have been waiting for the return of Blood Syndicate will be happy to know that Milestone is planning not only additional seasons of the revived Icon and Rocket, Static and Hardware, but they plan to add Blood Syndicate to the mix in 2022. The creative team for Blood Syndicate was not announced.
