Ohioan launches ‘Banned Books Box’ subscription service

The first month’s box will include a copy of ‘Gender Queer,’ along with a lapel pin designed by creator Maia Kobabe.

Ariel Hakim, a librarian former library reference associate in Northeast Ohio, has put a timely spin on the subscription box idea with the Banned Books Box, which delivers banned books and graphic novels to your door each month.

And December’s selection couldn’t come at a better time; it’ll feature Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, a graphic novel that has been making headlines recently in Virginia, Michigan and Florida as school districts face a barrage of criticism from overzealous parents for including it on their library shelves. (Kobabe recently responded to critics in a write-up published by the Washington Post).

“Maia wrote this graphic novel that parents of high schoolers have found in the school library and been completely vocal about how offended they are by some of the images,” Hakim told Cleveland Scene. “Maia wrote it to explain to family members about what non-binary means. Maia came out as queer and then several years as non-binary. When I decided that this was the book I wanted to use, I emailed the agent to see about getting signed books, and we got some book plates, and then Maia designed an enamel pin that will be one of the pieces of the book box. I like the book a lot, and I think it’s entertaining and educational. I love memoirs. Just reading anyone else’s story written in a sincere way is something I will always enjoy.”

Oni Press announces ‘Silk Hills’ by Ferrier, Level + Sherron

The new graphic novel about missing persons and the Mothman legend will arrive next summer.

Oni Press will publish Silk Hills, an Appalachian horror graphic novel that plays off the legend of the Mothman by Ryan Ferrier, Brian Level, Kate Sherron and Crank!, next summer.

The graphic novel will tell the story of Beth Wills, who comes to the town of Silk Hills to find someone who doesn’t want to be found. Her search for a missing troubled youth finds her running afoul of the local drug trade, too-friendly creepers, a very sinister deer and psychoactive moth dust.

“Silk Hills was another chance to work with collaborators I adore and who, in turn, have faith in me when I say ‘Okay, but I wanna try something a little weird here,’” Sherron said. “I prefer to tell dark tales in colorful ways, especially when there’s light and life to dig out from beneath burnt-black story-skin, and bless the boys for supporting such choices from the outset.”

Fund Me Monday | Help bring Avery Hill’s Spring 2022 line to life

Fund new titles by Taki Soma, George Wylesol and Claire Scully.

London-based publisher Avery Hill needs about $16,000 to publish their Spring 2022 line-up, and they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds.

Avery Hill Publishing came into being about 10 years ago, when Ricky Miller and Dave White began self-publishing comics like Tiny Dancing and Reads. Eventually their small-press efforts evolved into a full publishing house, bringing comics and graphic novels by Tillie Walden, George Wylesol, Zoe Thorogood, Tim Bird and more to press. They describe themselves as a publisher that “helps aspiring creators reach their potential and is a home to the geniuses that the mainstream has yet to recognise.”

Their Spring books include three titles: 2120 by Wylesol, Sleeping While Standing by Taki Soma and Outer Wilderness by Claire Scully.

Can’t Wait for Comics | Read the ‘Fine Print’ from Stjepan Šejić this week

Check out new comics and graphic novels coming out this week from Brian Michael Bendis, Stephen Byrne, John Ridley, Juann Cabal, Rob Liefeld, Allison Shaw, Jim Mahfood and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital this week. While this is a holiday week in the United States, you can be thankful to find several new title launches and big releases below.

The list of comics distributor websites has become quite the cornucopia lately. Here are some options to get the full picture of what’s arriving this week:

Also, when comics will actually arrive at your local store this week could vary, depending on where you are. Diamond Comics Distributors is still experiencing issues after the ransomware attack on their website, and they also noted that several Marvel titles could be delayed to their customers due to “a systems issue affecting Penguin Random House.” So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

Can’t Wait for Comics | DC Round Robin champ ‘Robins’ flutters into stores

New comics arrive this week from Tim Seeley, John Timms, Stephanie Phillips, Ram V, Anand RK, Mike Hawthorne and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.

The list of comics distributor websites has become quite the cornucopia lately. Here are some options to get the full picture of what’s arriving this week:

Something to keep in mind, though, is that the list of what is actually arriving at your specific local shop may vary from what’s on anyone’s official website for a myriad of reasons — so always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

And on that note, I’m afraid there’s bad news: this week will again bring delays for products shipped by Diamond, as they continue to recover from a ransomware attack. Their temporary website where they’ve been giving updates is still live and has current updates for retailers, and their regular website has also been restored. But their PreviewsWorld website is missing some information on this week’s books, so I’d suggest using one of the sources listed above.

Lemire + Sorrentino’s ‘Bone Orchard Mythos’ will span multiple projects

The ‘Gideon Falls’ creators will launch the first graphic novel, ‘The Passageway,’ next June.

Image Comics has released more details on Bone Orchard Mythos, the project Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino teased last week.

According to the press release, the project will include multiple original graphic novels and miniseries under the Bone Orchard Mythos banner, starting with an OGN called The Passageway that’s due out next summer. It’s about a geologist sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate “a strange phenomenon.” That will be followed in the fall by a miniseries titled Ten Thousand Black Feathers and then another original graphic novel hardcover in 2023 titled Tenement

“These will be just the first few projects in The Bone Orchard Mythos,” said Lemire. “But that’s just the start. We are planning a vast mythology of horror stories that will last for years to come.”

‘Criminal Macabre’ returns as a graphic novel next year from Dark Horse

Steve Niles and Syzmon Kudranski team up for a new graphic novel featuring supernatural detective Cal McDonald.

Dark Horse has announced that Steve Niles and Szymon Kudranski will bring Niles’ supernatural detective, Cal McDonald, back for more macabre action in a self-contained hardcover graphic novel.

Criminal Macabre: Spirit of the Demon will bring McDonald out of retirement for more monster killing. It’s expected to arrive in stores next summer.

“For this graphic novel I’ve taken a slightly more serious approach to Cal McDonald,” Niles said. “It’s a much moodier piece, and the art by Szymon is dark. It’s about falling into Hell so it fits well.”

New graphic novel will cover NY State Senator Julia Salazar’s first year in office

The 27-year-old democratic socialist was the youngest woman ever elected to New York’s state senate.

Following in the (large) footprints left by March and They Called Us Enemy, Top Shelf will publish Radical: My Year with a Socialist Senator by Sofia Warren next year.

The graphic novel will chronicle Warren’s time with Julia Salazar, the 27-year-old democratic socialist who became the youngest woman to ever be elected to New York’s state senate in 2018. Warren was embedded with Salazar’s staff during her first year in office.

“So much of this experience was a surprise to me,” said Warren, “that for their entire first legislative session, Julia and her staff let me be in the room; that ‘the room’ was just as often a food court, or a senior center, or a march in the middle of a blizzard; that they were as open with me about their frustrations as they were about their victories; and that I — an introverted, cynical millennial living through the Trump presidency — could leave the experience so motivated and inspired. I hope that readers leave this book feeling the same.”
