Congratulations to this year’s winners.
The 2021 Dragon Awards were announced this past weekend during Dragon Con, recognizing science fiction and fantasy books, movies, video games and comics.
The awards, which have been presented annually since 2016, recognize comics in two categories — “Best Comic Book” and “Best Graphic Novel.” After a jury selected the nominees, the winners were selected in an open vote from the general public.

Continue reading “‘X-Men,’ ‘The Magicians: New Class’ win at the 2021 Dragon Awards”Drawn and Quarterly will release new projects from Emma Grove, Rumi Hara and Travis Dandro next year.
Drawn + Quarterly has revealed three titles they plan to release next Spring from Emma Grove, Rumi Hara and Travis Dandro.
First up is The Third Person by Grove, which is about a woman who may have Dissociative Identity Disorder. They also announced Hara’s The Peanutbutter Sisters and Other American Stories, a collection of stories that range from science fiction to slice of life. And finally, Dandro’s Hummingbird Heart is about a teenager who moves in with his dying grandmother after his father commits suicide.

Jordan Crane, creator of NON, The Last Lonely Saturday, We Are All Me and The Clouds Above, will return with a new graphic novel next year. Fantagraphics will publish Keeping Two in March.

Continue reading “Fantagraphics announces ‘Keeping Two’ by Jordan Crane”The new hero Whistle will encounter the Riddler, Poison Ivy and Killer Croc in her debut graphic novel.
DC Comics has revealed more details on their upcoming YA graphic novel Whistle: A New Gotham City Hero by author E. Lockhart and artist Manuel Preitano.
As the title suggests, it’ll introduce a new hero to Gotham, Whistle, who fights crime with her dog, Lebowitz. It will also feature several Gotham villains, like Killer Croc, Poison Icy and the Riddler, who is a “family friend” and plays a big part in the story.

The National Cartoonist Society has trickled out the nominees for this year’s Reuben Award and the accompanying NCS Divisional Awards over the last few months, as they prepare for the big awards ceremony in October.
The divisional awards include categories that cover comic books, webcomics, political cartoons and more. I’ve included the nominations that are relevant to the world of comics, but you can find the complete nominations lists here and here.

The nominees for the 2021 Ringo Awards have been announced, marking the fifth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.
Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges that included retailer and online host Amy Dallen, Teaching Graphic Novels author Dr. Katie Monnin, podcaster/broadcast journalist John Siuntres, cartoonist Steenz and artist Brain Stelfreeze.
The fifth annual awards presentation will take place at The Baltimore Comic-Con on Oct. 23.

When Chris Pitzer announced he was shutting down AdHouse Books earlier this month, he mentioned that he still had one more release for October. That release is Comrade Kill, a new graphic novel from Patrick Sparrow.
“A cold war super soldier accidentally wakes from a cryogenic freeze long after the war has ended to find out his existence is now meaningless,” the description reads. “Being too dumb to reconcile this, he goes out into the wild to satisfy a pointless mission objective that no one asked him to do.”

In the new graphic novel Shark Summer, three friends on Martha’s Vineyard, inspired by a film about a shark being filmed on the island, spend their summer trying to make a film and solve a local mystery. It’s a familiar story, but the middle grade adventure is a fun and dangerous kinetic adventure of three kids coming together for an unforgettable summer that will shape each of them in different ways.
Ira Marcks has been working as a cartoonist, illustrator and teacher for years. He’s made projects that range from The Exploit and Aquarium Drift to the project Creative Everyday to to the webcomic Witch Knot, to Harvey Pelican & Co., a catalogue of esoteric things that ran in Weird Tales. Shark Summer is a departure for him, but it’s also the work of a talented and dynamic storyteller and hopefully this powerful book will find him a new audience. We spoke recently about the book, our shared love of Jaws and color.

DC Comics have announced several Wonder Woman projects for September and October, when they plan to pull out all the stops in celebrating the character’s 80th anniversary.
Wonder Woman debuted in the pages of All-Star Comics #8, which was published Oct. 21, 1941. Oct. 21, at least according to DC’s marketing department, is now known as “Wonder Woman Day” (although they have celebrated it at other times of the year as well).
October will bring the debut of at least one new Wonder Woman title, featuring her fellow Amazon Nubia, as well as an 80th anniversary special, an oversized issue of her regular title, a previously announced Black Label project, some free comics and more. Check’em out below.
