12 for ’21 | 2021 Year in Review

Shane Bailey looks back at the year that was for comics in 2021.

For the next 12 days, we’ll be looking back at the 2021 that was in the world of comics, with interviews, commentary and more. Check back often!

I went into this planning on writing about all the great books that came out this year, and there were a lot, but I can’t actually do that because I honestly can’t remember what came out this year compared to the last and the year before that. Part of this is the timelessness of comics. This year I’ve read a lot of older works combined with the new and they all kind of blend together into this huge mass of enjoyment for me. I’m not saying each wasn’t memorable and had worth of its own, but instead that there were so many great books that helped me go on this year that I can’t name them all. They all deserve to be celebrated. This year comics gave me hope. They really always have.

Check out what’s arriving in stores this week from Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Joshua Williamson, Jorge Molina, Mark Russell, Steve Lieber, Ana Galvan and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital this week. This week sees the kickoff of Marvel’s next big event, a new creative team for Batman, Buffy’s last stand and a whole lot more.

I’ve pulled out some of the highlights below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

Also, as a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

Can’t Wait for Comics | DC Round Robin champ ‘Robins’ flutters into stores

New comics arrive this week from Tim Seeley, John Timms, Stephanie Phillips, Ram V, Anand RK, Mike Hawthorne and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.

The list of comics distributor websites has become quite the cornucopia lately. Here are some options to get the full picture of what’s arriving this week:

Something to keep in mind, though, is that the list of what is actually arriving at your specific local shop may vary from what’s on anyone’s official website for a myriad of reasons — so always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

And on that note, I’m afraid there’s bad news: this week will again bring delays for products shipped by Diamond, as they continue to recover from a ransomware attack. Their temporary website where they’ve been giving updates is still live and has current updates for retailers, and their regular website has also been restored. But their PreviewsWorld website is missing some information on this week’s books, so I’d suggest using one of the sources listed above.

DC reveals Jonathan Kent is bisexual

The new Superman will share a kiss with another man in an issue coming out next month.

According to the New York Times and IGN, Jonathan Kent, the son of Superman who recently took over for his dad, is bisexual. He and Jay Nakamua will share a kiss in an issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El being published next month.

“The idea of replacing Clark Kent with another straight white savior felt like a missed opportunity,” writer Tom Taylor told the New York Times. He said that a “new Superman had to have new fights — real world problems — that he could stand up to as one of the most powerful people in the world.”
