Jeff Lemire + BOOM! tease something new for this fall

“… as both a comics fan and a creator, I have been craving longer format stories again.”

BOOM! Studios has announced that Jeff Lemire, creator of Sweet Tooth, Essex County, Fishflies, The Nobody and many other comics and graphic novels, will launch a new ongoing series at the publisher this fall.

Lemire will both write and draw the new title. No title or artwork was shared, beyond the “Eye of Providence” sketch shown above.

“For a while now I have felt like the ‘ongoing series’ in comics is a dying breed,” Lemire said. “I’m guilty of this myself, having put out a lot of shorter projects over the last several years. But as both a comics fan and a creator, I have been craving longer format stories again. Series like the classic Vertigo monthlies that would drive me to the comic shops every week when I was younger.”

Quick Hits | DC is looking into whether Andrea Sorrentino used AI to create art for a recent ‘Batman’ story

Plus: Steve Ditko is a Disney Legend, Ngozi Ukazu, Denny O’Neil, banned books and more!

DC is investigating whether artist Andrea Sorrentino used AI to create some of the artwork in a recent Batman arc. Sorrentino contributed some of the artwork to the recent “The Joker Year One” story that ran in Batman #142-144, and that work has come into question as to whether he drew it or if he used AI in some capacity.

A spokesperson for DC Comics told indy100 that”DC Comics has longstanding policies in place that all artwork must be the artist’s original work. We are looking into the specifics of this situation.”

The concern was initially raised on social media by James Leech, who expressed his concerns that Sorrentino hadn’t drawn the artwork himself. “First off, there are the usual telltale signs – strange anatomy, errors a human is unlikely to make. The weird hands, Joker being insanely ripped in one panel and wasting away in another. His wandering nipples!” Leech said. “Secondly, there’s the style, which Sorrentino doesn’t appear to have used before outside of a couple of instagram posts. His other work is very distinctive – heavily photo-referenced, high contrast lighting. This is quite a departure from that. Not enough on its own, but telling.”

Phillip Kennedy Johnson + SOM snap their jaws down on ‘Crocodile Black’

The new series kicks off from BOOM! Studios in May.

Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist SOM will team for a new “macabre thriller” from BOOM! Studios, Crocodile Black.

It’s about a COVID-era kid who goes through a “dark reinvention,” highlighted by his new black crocodile boots.

Crocodile Black is a story about dark reinvention. It’s about hidden trauma, unchecked obsession, the power that masks give us, and a dead man’s black crocodile-skin boots. It’s about a COVID-era kid with no prospects finding something he never knew he wanted, and using it to become someone he never knew he wanted to be: a dangerous man,” Johnson said.

Black Panther stalks the night as a vampire in ‘Black Panther: Blood Hunt’

The tie-in miniseries to Marvel’s big ‘Blood Hunt’ event is by Cheryl Lynn Eaton and Farid Karami.

Marvel has announced the first tie-in miniseries for the upcoming Blood Hunt event, which will see Marvel’s heroes face off with an emboldened vampire population. That miniseries will see Black Panther return to Wakanda — as a vampire!

Black Panther: Blood Hunt by Cheryl Lynn Eaton and Farid Karami sees the exiled king face a “soul-crushing struggle between protecting his people from his new brothers and satisfying his new overpowering thirst for blood.”

“Long live the king! Literally! While T’Challa has always been the height of human excellence, steering such a legendary character as he navigates a supernatural battlefield populated with gods and monsters—all while adapting to a form and newfound powers unfamiliar to him—has been a treat,” Eaton told Marvel.com. “T’Challa’s royal status is not just Wakandan in nature, but vampiric as well. And I can’t wait to explore both of those bloodlines. No pun intended!”

BOOM! announces ‘The Displaced’ by Brisson + Casalanguida + Cunniffe

The story of a forgotten Canadian city kicks off next year.

A project that was almost writer Ed Brisson’s first published comics project will finally see the light of day, as BOOM! Studios has announced The Displaced, which is about a city that has vanished without a trace and that no one can remember.

Brisson is joined by artist Luca Casalanguida, colorist Dee Cunniffe and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou on the project, which kicks off in February.

The Displaced was almost my very first published work. About a year before Comeback was picked up by Shadowline/Image, I had pitched The Displaced and had interest from a publisher. However, after months of back-and-forth notes, the book ended up veering away from the book that I wanted to do, so we amicably parted ways. It was a tough call to make, but ultimately, the right one. This book is too dear to me, I didn’t want to lose that,” Brisson said in his email newsletter. “The concept sat in a digital drawer for years. I’d periodically take it out, blow off the dust, and work on it. Yet it always felt like there was a piece missing. At some point during 2022, that piece finally fell into place and I set out to pitch it again — the first time since that 2011 experience.”

Brisson has worked with BOOM! in the past, on titles like Cluster and The Last Contract, and The Displaced marks his return to the publisher for the first time in about seven years.

Image releases more details on Lemire + Sorrentino’s ‘Tenement’

The Bone Orchard Mythos project will kick off in June.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino’s The Bone Orchard Mythos horror universe will continue in June with Tenement, which Lemire referred to as “the centerpiece of our new horror universe up to this point.”

Previously teased as a six-issue miniseries, Tenement will now run 10 issues beginning in June with an oversized first issue.

Tenement is the first book I started developing in the early days of planning The Bone Orchard Mythos with Andrea Sorrentino,”Lemire told Popverse. “In many ways it will be the centerpiece of our new horror universe up to this point. It will be our longest story so far and, like Gideon Falls, this new series will follow an ensemble of characters and the readers will really be able to spend time with them and invest in their stories. This will also be a book that starts to connect all the threads of our previous Bone Orchard books and begins to reveal the larger mythology we have been building. Andrea’s work on this one is even more mind-blowing than usual (if that’s possible).”
