Slugfest | ‘Summer of Symbiotes’ leads to ‘Death of the Venomverse’

Marvel has revealed more details and a teaser image for Summer of Symbiotes, something they teased last October along with several other events for 2023. It’s less of a single-story crossover and more of a moniker they are using to describe a whole bunch of different symbiote-themed series, miniseries and events.

While many of the events teased on the image we’ve heard of before, like Carnage Reigns and Extreme Venomverse, there is one new one listed — Death of the Venomverse, which echoes the Death of the Spiderverse storyline we’re seeing in Spider-Man.

It’s all leading to this! The epic adventures above are spiraling towards an explosive destination, and not all of your favorite symbiotes will survive the journey. The Carnage symbiote is more bloodthirsty than ever and heads to the multiverse for its greatest killing spree yet. But what is it after? Find out more when this upcoming limited series is announced at the Marvel Comics: Spider-Man & the Venomverse Panel at C2E2 2023!

Up from the depths: IDW announces ‘Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons’

Frank Tieri and Inaki Miranda tell a tale of monsters and pirates this June.

Writer Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda, the team behind DC’s Old Lady Harley series, will reunite for a new miniseries featuring another destructively iconic character — Godzilla.

“I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have written for quite a few iconic franchises, but I have to admit, there’s something extra special about getting to work on Godzilla,” Tieri said. “Just writing this series I’m instantly a little kid again, watching him fight Rodan or the Smog Monster or whichever Monster of the Week. Needless to say, it’s been a thrill for me…but probably less so for my family, since I’ve been doing the Godzilla roar around the house pretty much nonstop.”

IDW has announced Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons, a five-issue miniseries set in the “era of seafaring and superstition,” aka the 1500s, when maps warned of dragons and monsters in undiscovered parts of the world. In this case, those warnings were right. The comic will tell the story of one of explorer Sir Francis Drake’s lost voyages — one that featured everyone’s favorite radioactive kaiju.

“What could be cooler than a Godzilla tale with pirates?” Tieri said. “Here There Be Dragons is a lost voyage of Sir Francis Drake, told through the eyes of a crewman facing execution. The question is, is he telling the truth? Is there really a conspiracy to cover up what happened to Drake on that island and the existence of Godzilla? Or is this merely another pirate’s tall tale? Avast, ye Godzilla fans, and batten down the hatches at your local comic book shop!”

Steve Niles + Damien Worm return to IDW for ‘Brynmore’

The five-issue gothic horror series begins in June.

Steve Niles, writer of the first IDW comic in 30 Days of Night, will return to the publisher for a new miniseries this summer titled Brynmore. He’s joined by artist Damien Worm, who he previously collaborated with on October Faction (also an IDW title).

The five-issue series is set on a remote island plagued by a sinister generational curse, as a prodigal son returns to his hometown to reconnect with his daughter — and ends up battling “malefic forces beyond his control.”

​​“I’ve had the title Brynmore in mind for years, waiting for the right story,” Niles said. “This one just felt right. It has themes that I love to work with often: being an outsider in a strange land, the struggles of a single parent, plus a good dose of horror and scares. One of the big motivations for Brynmore was getting to work with Damien Worm again. I love working with him, and he’s really bringing out the big guns for this series.”

What strength! Ninja Turtles and Street Fighter enter the arena in May

Paul Allor, Ariel Medel and Sarah Myer bring together the two crews in a prestigious fighting tournament.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have teamed up with everyone from Batman to the Power Rangers, and in May they’ll add the bare-knuckle battlers from Capcom’s classic video game Street Fighter to the list.

The five-issue Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vs. Street Fighter by writer Paul Allor, artist Ariel Medel and colorist Sarah Myer will kick off in May.

“It feels amazing to bring these iconic brands together,” says Allor. “I grew up with all these characters, though in very different ways—watching TMNT cartoons on Saturday mornings, and then a few years later, desperately smashing buttons while being absolutely destroyed at Street Fighter™ II. Readers are going to have so much fun watching these characters come together as they face an enormous threat to both teams, from Mikey and Chun-Li’s unlikely bond to Raph and Guile’s rivalry and mutual—but very grudging—respect. This book has it all: humor, danger, a massive number of twists and turns, and a ton of amazing, brutal, over-the-top, bonkers fight scenes! It’s gonna be a blast.”

IDW explores what happened after ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ in a new miniseries

Marc Guggenheim and Oleg Chudakov pit Captain Kirk and crew against their doppelgängers.

IDW continues to explore new and established frontiers in their Star Trek comics line, and their latest announcement points to more of the latter — Star Trek: The Motion Picture–Echos will follow the original crew in the immediate aftermath of the first Star Trek film.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit theaters way back in 1979, and its place in history stands as being the first Star Trek film and immediately proceeding the much more loved Wrath of Khan. I honestly couldn’t even tell you what the story was about, but it sounds like writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Oleg Chudakov thankfully have a better memory than I do.

“Despite watching the occasional fragment of a Star Trek episode here and there with my father, my true introduction was going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture with my grandparents—I was entranced. I’m thrilled that IDW and Paramount Global have allowed me to revisit that time period, which was so impactful to me and my love of Star Trek,” Guggenheim said. “Almost all Trek stories are told from the point of view of the Enterprise crew, but I was interested in telling a story from the perspective of an outsider as a means of recapturing how it felt for me when I first saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”

Wheeler + Kyriazis create the purr-fect cat-themed thriller

IDW will publish the six-issue ‘Cat Fight’ starting in May.

Andrew Wheeler, writer of one of Smash Pages’ favorites, Sins of the Black Flamingo, is teaming up with Ilias Kyriazis (Collapser, Secret Identities) on a new heist thriller featuring cat burglars — cat-themed cat burglars. Cat Fight “follows a debonaire jewel thief whose decadent sensibilities and taste for high-powered thrills inadvertently lead him down a path of illicit intrigue.”

“I’m so excited for readers to escape into our world of glamorous adventure! Cat Fight is an action thriller about family and connection in an age of disconnection, a vacation from gray skies and ordinary lives,” Wheeler said. “The art team has done an incredible job bringing this breakneck ride to life. It’s John Wick meets Kill Bill meets…well, Cats!”

‘The Rocketeer’ returns for a one-shot in May

Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Adam Hughes, Jae Lee and more contribute stories to the anthology.

IDW will publish an anthology one-shot featuring Dave Stevens’ The Rocketeer, with stories by Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Adam Hughes, Jae Lee and more.

The idea for the project sprang from 2022 documentary Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection by Kelvin Mao. Mao found out that The screenwriters for The Rocketeer movie, Bilson and De Meo, had written a Rocketeer comic book script featuring the Rocketeer teaming with Amelia Earhart. Hughes will draw that story, while Mao and Windom each wrote a new story for the one-shot.

‘TMNT: Last Ronin’ expands with a new one-shot, director’s cut

IDW announces a tie-in story focused on April O’Neil as well as a ‘director’s cut’ version of the ‘Lost Years’ miniseries.

Tomorrow sees the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin–Lost Years #1, the first issue of a new miniseries that serves as prequel to IDW recent smash hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, an “Old Man Logan” approach to the latter years of your favorite heroes in a half shell. To accompany that series, IDW has announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin—Lost Day Special, a one-shot that will “straddle both the past and the future of the Last Ronin universe.”

The 40-page special issue, available in May, is by writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, illustrator Ben Bishop and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado. The story will be told from the point of view of April O’Neil, as she and her daughter raise for new mutant turtles.

“As Tom Waltz and I dig deep into the evolution of New York City post-Last Ronin, the Lost Day tale brings the future of all things TMNT up close and very personal,” Eastman said. “Buckle up, things are about to get messy!”

‘Day of Blood’ flows through IDW’s Star Trek titles this summer

Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Christopher Cantwell and Mike Feehan will kick off the crossover event on Free Comic Book Day.

Two of IDW’s ongoing Star Trek titles will come together for a crossover event later this year — Star Trek: Day of Blood. The story will kick off in IDW’s Free Comic Book Day issue on May 6, then run through issues of Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant.

Prelude to Day of Blood, the Free Comic Book Day issue, will be co-written by Star Trek writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and Star Trek: Defiant writer Christopher Cantwell. Mike Feehan will provide the art.

“I’ve been nothing short of ecstatic to be a part of this new, larger Star Trek initiative at IDW,” says Cantwell. “There were moments in our writers’ room with Jackson and Collin where I couldn’t believe we were really doing this—not just telling one Star Trek story but weaving together multiple Trek stories at the same time, with plotlines from Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant converging. We threw all our boldest ideas and best character pairings into a story of pure chaos, starship battles, and real epic dramatic resonance you can only achieve in the scope of comics.”

Slugfest | ‘Batman/Spawn’ gets an ‘inks only’ edition

DC and Todd McFarlane have announced Batman/Spawn Unplugged, an uncolored and unlettered version of the recent crossover comic by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo.

“It’s always exciting whenever us artists can present our work in as unfiltered a manner as possible,” said McFarlane. “This book will let you see the true skill of how Greg Capullo does his masterful storytelling… and every line that we both put down.”

Usagi + Ninja Turtles meet again in ‘WhereWhen’

Stan Sakai will write and draw a new miniseries bringing the old friends together.

Earlier this year Dark Horse Comics announced that Stan Sakai and Usagi Yojimbo would return to the publisher as part of the Dogu Publishing imprint after spending a few years at IDW, but it looks like Sakai’s time at IDW isn’t quite up. IDW announced today that Sakai is writing and drawing a team-up between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Usagi Yojimbo, titled WhereWhen.

“I am so pleased with the story and art for WhereWhen,” Sakai said. “There is a lot of emotion and, of course, lots of action. I actually wrote this story about five years ago and had been anxious to get to it. In the past, the Turtles have met just a few of Usagi’s friends. This time, everyone is thrown in—Gen, Tomoe, Jotaro, Yukichi, Kitsune, Chizu, and more! This one is epic!”

IDW reincarnates ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ cartoon as a comic book miniseries

David M. Booher, Sam Maggs and George Kambadais will revive the 1980s animated series.

Hank, Diana, Bobby, Uni and the rest of the party from the 1983 Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon will return in Dungeons & Dragons: Saturday Morning Adventures from IDW next year.

The four-issue miniseries by David M. Booher, Sam Maggs and George Kambadais celebrates the 40th anniversary of the animated program, which ran for three seasons from 1983-1985. In it, six regular kids were transported into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, where they fought Venger and his evil forces, received guidance from the mysterious Dungeon Master and tried to find a way back home.

“As a lifelong D&D fan, it is an absolute dream to get to work reviving a childhood classic,” Maggs said. “It’s been such a blast working with IDW and the fine folks at Wizards of the Coast to home in on what made the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon such a cult favorite. Setting these characters up for a whole new run of stories has truly been a career highlight, and I hope fans will love seeing Uni (well…all our cool kids, but especially Uni) back in action as much as I do!”
