Dustin Weaver designs three new ‘hosts’ for Oni’s EC Comics revival

‘… it’s just such a treat to draw characters so unabashedly wicked.’

As EC Comics continues its climb out of the grave, publisher Oni Press has revealed a trio of faces that will serve as “hosts” for the revived horror line — The Grave-Digger, The Tormentor and The Grim Inquisitor.

They’ll make their debut next month in Epitaphs from the Abyss #1, the first double-sized issue of the anthology. It will feature contributions from Brian Azzarello, Chris Condon, J. Holtham, Stephanie Phillips, Jorge Fornes, Phil Hester, Peter Krause, Vlad Legostaev and more, and in between those stories, you’ll find appearances by EC’s new “torturous trio,” as designed by Paklis creator Dustin Weaver.

“Usually a big part of designing characters is costuming, but in looking back at the original Tales From the Crypt comics, it’s clear that the most important and defining features of the horror hosts are their ghoulish faces,” the former Avengers and Star Wars artist said. “It’s all about the faces, and with these modern host designs I wanted to carry on that tradition.”

Pornsak Pichetshote assembles an all-star creator line-up for ‘The Horizon Experiment’

The project includes five one-shots by Terry and Rachel Dodson, Sabir Pirzada, Michael Walsh and more.

With all the great comics Pornsak Pichetshote has been writing over the last few years, sometimes it’s easy to forget he used to edit award-winning books at Vertigo. He’s putting both skills to work with The Horizon Experiment, a line of one-shots by various creative teams “featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons.”

Pichetshote is working with co-editor Will Dennis on the line, which will feature contributions from Sabir Pirzada, Michael Walsh, Tananarive Due, Kelsey Ramsay, J. Holtham and more. Pichetshote is also writing the first one-shot, The Manchurian, which will feature artwork by Terry and Rachel Dodson.

“I’m fascinated with taking popular genres, like horror and noir, and seeing what they’d look like from diverse perspectives—I explored this in my Image Comics books Infidel and The Good Asian. But, I’ve been limited to my own experiences. So, for The Horizon Experiment, I decided to use the same mentality but open it up to other people, inviting some of the most talented people I know to work on it,” Pichetshote said. “Each one-shot is the equivalent of a pilot for a new creator-owned series, with the potential of continuing should there be demand for more. Each team of creators have had different approaches—all of them have knocked me out, and I couldn’t be more proud that the end result is five very unique books, all connected by the same ambitious spirit.”

Night Thrasher ollies, kickflips and noseslides his way into a new miniseries

The former leader of the New Warriors returns in a new miniseries by J. Holtham and Nelson Dániel.

Night Thrasher, the skateboard-riding rich kid who took to superheroing after the death of his parents, will return in a new miniseries next year by J. Holtham and Nelson Dániel.

The new series will give the founder of the New Warriors a new look and a new archenemy, while rekindling his relationship with fellow New Warrior member Silhouette.

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in the pages of Thor before jumping into the New Warriors series by Fabian Nicieza and Mark Bagley, the character is one of many that epitomizes that early 1990s era of comics. While it appeared he died during Civil War in the battle that kicked off the event, he was actually saved by The Collector, as revealed in Contest of Champions a few years back.

NYCC: Marvel announces new projects featuring Bloodline, Bishop and more

The Marvel’s Voices panel at the New York Comic Con brought news from Wakanda, Krakoa and the far reaches of space.

During their Marvel’s Voices panel at the New York Comic Con today, Marvel announced several upcoming projects for February that tie into Black History Month, including a new Marvel’s Voices anthology, a Bloodline miniseries and more.

Let’s start with the new Marvel’s Voices anthology, which this time around will focus on a specific set of characters: Marvel’s Voices: Wakanda Forever. The stories will feature Black Panther, Shuri, Okoye and more by as-yet-unrevealed creative teams.
