Exclusive: Ian Flynn + Holly G! reintroduce Fran Frazer to the ‘World of Archie’

The Golden Age photojournalist will make her return to comics this January.

For the past several years Archie Comics has reintroduced some of their classic genre characters into their all-ages comics. From their superhero characters like the Crusaders to private detective Fu Chang, the company has been breathing new life into these characters while at the same time adding to the rich tapestry of Riverdale.

We’re pleased to announce that another Golden Age character will find her way to Riverdale — Fran Frazer, a photojournalist who first appeared in Top-Notch Comics #9 back in 1940. She’ll make her return in January in a new story appearing in World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #136 by writer Ian Flynn and artist Holly G!

Flynn has had a lot of experience revisiting these older characters and making them relevant to the modern age, having written many of the stories that integrated the Crusaders into the classic Archie universe.

“It’s always a pleasure to be entrusted with breathing new life into these older characters,” Flynn said. “I hope folks enjoy Fran’s new incarnation and ask to see more of her intrepid, glove-trotting adventures.”

Take a Ditko-esque trip into the ‘Topsy Turvey’ with Jake Chang and Archie [Preview]

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Archie Comics has shared a preview with us of World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #133, which will feature two new stories in addition to a whole lot of classic material.

The first story features Archie falling into something called the “Topsy Turvey” — think The Upside-Down by way of Steve Ditko — and detective Jake Chang has to figure out how to get him out (with some help from Vegas, Archie’s dog). Tom DeFalco, Steven Butler and Jim Amash present this strange adventure.

Then, Dan Parent and Bob Smith bring together the Superteens and She-Fox to face the menace of Metra. This mullet-sporting villain can control time and space, but seems very hung up on the 1980s, much to our heroes’ dismay.

Colorist Glenn Whitmore and letterer Jack Morelli are on board for both stories, which arrive in next week’s digest. Check out the previews below, along with a complete classic Little Archie story featuring a new friend from outer space.

Captain Commando saves the day and steals the spotlight in this preview of ‘World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest’ #132

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Courtesy of Archie Comics, we’re pleased to present a preview of two new stories from World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #132, which comes out Aug. 9.

The first story finds Archie and the gang at the beach, where Captain Commando keeps stealing the spotlight and Archie gets a little bit jealous of the amphibious hero. Dan Parent writes and draws this one, with Bob Smith inking, Glenn Whitmore providing color and Jack Morelli on letters.

For the second story, Whitmore and Morelli worked with writer Tom DeFalco, artist Bill Galvan and inker Jim Amash on a Little Archie story featuring Captain Valor. This time our hero is teaching Archie self-defense just in time for a confrontation with the bully Fangs Fogarty.

Check out both preview below, along with a classic Little Archie story by Bob Bolling and Henry Scarpelli that features a baseball game against the Southside Serpents, an appearance by Chick Cooper and some visitors from another world.

Pureheart + Fly Girl hit the beach in this preview of ‘World of Archie Jumbo Comics’ #130

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

Archie Comics has shared a preview with us of World of Archie Jumbo Comics #130, which will include two new stories featuring some fun seasonal activities.

In “Spring Breaking and Entering,” Archie’s superhero alter ego, Pureheart, teams up with Fly Girl to try and save Spring Break from the classic villains Smash & Grab. You know someone’s a villain when they wear a striped shirt, right? The masks don’t help, either. This one is written by Ian Flynn, with art by Steven Butler and Jim Amash.

Next, in “Can’t Top This,” the villainous Kennel Kween interrupts the Riverdale Hot Air Balloon Show and steals a balloon! It’s up to Inferno the Fire Breather to set things right. Flynn wrote this one as well, which features artwork by Bill Galvan and Bob Smith. Glenn Whitmore and Jack Morelli provided coloring and lettering, respectively, for both stories.

Check out the previews below, along with a complete classic Archie tale by George Gladir and Dan Parent that features Hiram Lodge accidentally gaining super powers.

Pow-Girl makes her triumphant return in ‘World of Archie Jumbo Comics’ #128

Check out exclusive previews for two new stories from Archie’s upcoming digest, which arrives in stores on March 22.

It’s time to hit the trail again with another preview from our friends at Archie Comics. World of Archie Jumbo Comics #128 will feature two new stories that guest star some classic characters, including the return of Nevada Jones.

“Roam on the Range” features the Golden Age cattle detective, who now works for Mr. Lodge on his ranch. In this story, Mr. Lodge tricks Archie into taking a job helping Nevada Jones with a cattle drive, which just seems like a horrible idea ll the way around. It’s by Ian Flynn, the Kennedy Brothers, Jim Amash, Glenn Whitmore and Jack Morelli.

The second story stars Pow-Girl, a character created by Jerry Siegel and Paul Reinman at the tail-end of the Silver Age in Mighty Comics #43. While her initial career was fairly short, Tom DeFalco, Dan Parent and Bob Smith revive her in a story where she tries to impress the Mighty Crusaders by teaming up with Archie’s superhero alter-ego, Pureheart the Powerful. Archie finds out the hard way that she packs a mean punch.

Check out the previews for both stories below, as well as a full reprint story with more fisticuffs by Frank Doyle and Harry Lucey.

Captain Commando and The Fox come to the rescue in ‘World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest’ #127

Check out an exclusive preview of two new stories coming in next week’s digest from Archie Comics.

We’re happy to once again present a preview courtesy of our friends at Archie Comics — this time for World of Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #127, which comes out Feb. 15.

Today’s exclusive includes previews of two new stories, both written by Ian Flynn, drawn by Steven Butler, colored by Glenn Whitmore and lettered by Jack Morelli. The first, “Commando & Conquer,” features an appearance by Captain Commando, a hero I had to look up. He first appeared during World War II and lead The Boy Soldiers, a group of kids who fought the Nazi regime behind enemy lines. In this new story, which is inked by Lily Butler, Archie signs his friends up for a boot camp to get them in shape for the summer, but it happens to be run by the good captain, who attempts to turn them into the next generation of Boy Buddies.

The second story, “Snap(shot) Decision,” Jughead and his photojournalist instructor Paul Patton are ambushed by the Pain Conductor, who wants revenge on Patton for an unflattering expose on him. But Patton is actually the superhero The Fox, and he springs into action against this train-themed villain. This one is inked by Jim Amash.

Below you’ll find previews of both stories, plus a complete classic Archie story where he day dreams about being super hero — which is kind of funny, given that these days Archie has been everything from a superhero to a zombie to a warrior of the apocalypse. It’s by the late George Gladir, Pat Kennedy and Terry Austin.
